1. Purpose: The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that all tasks conducted at Nazareth College with an inherent risk level of ‘high’ or ‘extreme’ have a Safe Work Procedure (SWP) developed. All persons carrying out these tasks are expected to be competent in the related SWP. 2 . References

Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 3. Definitions Competent Person: A person who has acquired through training, qualification or experience, or a combination of both the knowledge and skills required to safely carry out a task Safe Work Procedure: Are documented procedures that outline:

The hazards associated with performing a particular task (which may include equipment use, chemical use or working in a hazardous environment

Safety instructions in performing that task including any checks and pre-cautions to be exercised

A list of the persons authorised to supervise and train persons in how to undertake the task safely

Any required Personal Protective Equipment to protect, employees students and contractors.

4 . Responsibility

The Business Manager is responsible for: Identifying all tasks that require a Safe Work Procedure; Developing controls to manage these risks in consultation with the HSR and employees; Documenting Safe Work Procedures for all tasks or delegating this to a competent person; Ensuring employees are trained in Safe Work Procedures and ensuring they are competent to perform the tasks safely prior to commencing work; Reviewing Safe Work Procedures for appropriateness to the task; and Training employees in Safe Work Procedures and ensuring they are competent to perform tasks safely prior to commencing work.



The functions of the HSR is: Assisting the Business Manager to identify tasks that require a Safe Work Procedure; Participating in the development of Safe Work Procedures. Employees are responsible for: Reporting tasks which may have associated hazards onto the Incident and Hazard form Not undertaking tasks within the workplace where there is a Safe Work Procedure developed and they have not been deemed as competent in its application; Following Safe Work Procedures they have been deemed competent in applying; and Reporting any discrepancies between the documented Safe Work Procedure and the actual method adopted to perform tasks in the workplace to the Business Manager. 5. Procedure: 5.1 Identifying tasks that require SWPs The Business Manager, in consultation with HSRs and employees, must identify tasks that will require a Safe Work Procedure. The Business Manager should have regard to the following sources of information when determining tasks that will require a Safe Work Procedure : Hazard and Incident Reporting Procedure; OHS Risk Management Procedure; OHS Risk Register (high and extreme inherent risk ratings); Workplace Inspections; Contractor Management Procedure; and OHS Purchasing Procedure. As a minimum the Business Manager should make sure that all tasks conducted at Nazareth College with an inherent risk level of ‘high’ or ‘extreme’ have a Safe Work Procedure developed for those tasks.

5.2 Documenting Safe Work Procedures The Property Manager is to document SWP using the Safe Work Procedure Template. This is to be done in consultation with the HSR and relevant employees. The Safe Work Procedure is to be tailored for specific tasks and should consider: The hazards associated with performing a particular task (which may include equipment use, chemical use or working in hazardous environment); Safety instructions in performing that task including any checks and pre-cautions to be exercised; A list of the persons authorised to supervise and train persons in how to undertake the task safely; and Any required Personal Protective Equipment to protect employees, students and contractor.



Tasks that require a SWP to be developed in Nazareth College include:

Working at Heights;

Manual Handling

Hot Work

Electrical Isolation and Tagging;

Use of hazardous plant or equipment. The Property Manager is responsible for communicating the tasks within the workplace that have an associated Safe Work Procedure developed to all employees (see Consultation and Communication Procedure). 5.3 Training Employees The Business Manger is to make sure the Safe Work Procedure identifies the training needs of employees and that these are implemented as per the requirements of Induction and Training Procedure. The training is to include a combination of verbal description and practical demonstration to instruct the employee in: how to perform the task step by step (including pre-operation, operation and post operation); the hazards associated with the task; and the controls to be adopted to manage the risk associated with the task. In order for an employee to be deemed competent in performing a task the Property Manager must make sure that the employee/s are observed performing the task in accordance with the relevant Safe Work Procedure. The competent person is to be recorded on the Safe Work Procedure and also by the Business Manager in the OHS Training Register. If an employee is initially deemed as not yet competent they are to be retrained in the Safe Work Procedure until the Property manager is satisfied that the employee is able to follow all steps outlined in the Safe Work Procedure . The training process is to be repeated annually for each Safe Work Procedure. Training on a specific Safe Work Procedure that would also be relevant to a new employee should be included on the OHS Induction Checklist.

5.4 Maintaining Records The Business Manager is to maintain copies of completed Safe Work Procedures. The Property Manager must also make sure that copies of completed Safe Work Procedures are provided to employees who have been deemed as competent following training. 5.5 Reviewing Safe Work Procedures The Business Manager, in consultation with HSRs and employees, are to review all Safe Work Procedures annually or when:

new equipment or plant is purchased



a task changes

a hazard or incident is reported If, as a result of the review, any changes are made to the Safe Work Procedure the Business Manager is to make sure that employees are re-trained in accordance with the amended procedure. 5.6 OHS Risk Register The Business Manager should also make sure that any controls identified and implemented as a result of developing or reviewing a Safe Work Procedure are included in the OHS Risk Register. 6. Safe Work Procedure Checklist:

1. Pre visit:

Check Client case history.

Book Fleet vehicles overnight to avoid late returns to the office.

If you are visiting outside business hours you should make prior arrangement with your manager and notify them of your safe return.

Record whereabouts on workplace’s offsite register, diary sheet or equivalent. This includes recording the time of the visit and the address.

Any initial home visit must be conducted with another person, preferably with member of the school staff.

2. During visit:

Carry a fully charged mobile phone and keep it turned on.

Park in a location that permits a quick and safe exit.

Do not enter home unless invited.

At any time if you feel unsafe terminate the meeting, leave and contact your manager.

If anyone unexpected arrives during the visit terminate the visit.

Appropriate PPE must be worn if there is a potential exposure to biological hazards.

Make sure appropriate cleaning and housekeeping standards are maintained at all times to minimise the risk of a slip, trip or fall.

3. Post visit:

If you are visiting outside business hours notify your manager of your safe return.

Start compressor noting pressure increase and cut out/cut in pressure.

Do not kink or squash the hose.

Listen for any air leaks when using the compressor and report these immediately.

Check the compressor pressure at regular intervals.

Release the pressure in hose prior to uncoupling.

3. POST-Operation:

Release the pressure from the hose and vessel.

Store air hose off the ground to prevent contamination from dirt.

Return air tools to their storage area.

1. PRE-Operation:

Ensure operator has been trained in safe use of the plant.

Wear adequate and appropriate PPE.


Check that plant is in good repair.

Check that chain is lubricated, sharp and the tension is correct.

Never operate a chainsaw without a front hand guard (it protects the operator in a kickback situation).

2. Operation:

Start chain saw while placed on ground or stable surface.

Hold the chain saw firmly with both hands and maintain a secure grip. Using a loose grip can cause kickbacks.

o Always begin your cut at peak revs.

o Stand to the side of the cutting path of the chain saw.

o Do not cut above shoulder height.

o Never hold the chainsaw in one hand or by one handle only.

o Do not walk with chain saw whilst blade is spinning.

o Turn off chain saw prior to refuelling. Refuel the chainsaw only after the engine has cooled down.

3. POST-Operation:

Ensure blade has stopped spinning before removing waste material/work piece.

Ensure blade has stopped spinning before placing it on the ground.

Use the chain guard (scabbard) when machine is carried or not in use.

1. PRE-Operation:

Put on disposable gloves, safety glasses and plastic apron;

Obtain paper towels, sealable plastic bags, sturdy tongs, mop, bucket, detergent sharps bin and household bleach;

2. Operation:

Absorb bulk of spill with disposable materials such as paper towels;

Care should be taken to ensure waste does not contain sharp material (i.e. broken glass);

Using sturdy tongs, pick up sharp material and wrap securely in several layers of newspaper;

Place waste into a puncture-resistant rigid walled container such as a sharps bin;

Place all other contaminated waste into the sealable bag;

Clean the area with warm water and detergent;

After cleaning, disinfect the area with a freshly prepared solution of 1:50 diluted household bleach (1mL bleach to 50mL water) and leave to dry;

For small spills (spots of blood on tiles) an alcohol wipe may be sufficient.

3. POST-Operation:

Clean cleaning equipment with warm water and detergent and store dry;

Ensure plastic apron and safety glasses are clean prior to putting away;

Remove and dispose of gloves into the sealable bag;

Dispose of the sealed bag into a Refuse/Sanitary Waste disposable bin;

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry with paper towels;

Any contact with blood or bodily fluid is to be recorded in eduSafe.

Turn on the kiln and keep hands clear of it whilst in operation.

3. POST-Operation:

When the firing process is finished, wait until kiln has cooled prior to opening the door.

1. PRE-Operation:

Unwind electric cord completely.

Undertake visual inspection of electrical leads.

Use only attachments supplied or those approved by the manufacturer.

2. Operation:

Exercise caution in relation to electrical lead.

Stand upright ensuring all operations with this equipment is undertaken with the intention of maintaining the back’s natural curves.

Ensure equipment is used in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

Operate during times of low pedestrian traffic.

Do not attempt to polish over water and avoid working in wet areas.

Never attempt to polish flammable materials or combustible liquids.

Switch off the machine, switch off at the power point and disconnect lead from power source when moving from one area to another.

3. POST-Operation:

Switch off machine, disconnect the lead from the power after each use.

Electrical leads should be coiled and tied for protection against damage and for ease of storing.

Wear appropriate dust mask when cleaning to prevent inhalation of fine dust.

1. PRE-Operation Precautions:

Avoid wearing loose clothing when cooking with gas stoves , and tie long hair back;

Familiarise yourself with controls

Wear apron at all times, and gloves when removing items from the stove;

Switch on Extraction System.

2.Operation:

Using Automatic pilot ignite gas.

If gas fails to ignite after 5 seconds, switch gas off and ask teacher for assistance;

Do not interfere with electronic igniters on gas stoves;

Turn handles of pots inward while cooking to avoid accidental spillage;

Do not leave metal spoons sitting inside the pots when stirring food as they can become much hotter than the pot itself.

Lift all pans with an oven mitt

If called away from the stove, turn of the gas burners prior to leaving the room.

3.POST-Operation:

Turn off gas;

Beware of latent heat;

Clean stove top when cooled down.

1. PRE-Operation:


Make sure all guards are in place.

Remove all tools and scrap from the bed, top and slides of the machine.

Parts should be well lubricated, free of dirt and free of dust.


2. Operation:

Do not attempt to cut material beyond the capacity of the machine.

Never attempt to cut rod, strap or wire with this machine.

Use correct lifting procedures when handling large sheets of material.

Take extreme care during the initial feeding of the work piece into the machine.

The work piece should always be held as far back from the edge being fed into the guillotine.

Ensure fingers and limbs are clear before actuating the guillotine.

Hold material firmly to prevent inaccurate cutting due to creep.

Be aware of your feet position to avoid accidental contact with the foot operated lever.

3. POST-Operation:

If possible, get another person to hold the handles of the wheelchair so that it will not move when a person is being seated. If this is not possible then stand behind the chair and hold the handles yourself.

Ensure walkway / routes to be taken are clear of hazards; and

Ensure users have appropriate manual handling training.

2. Operation:

Ensure brakes are disengaged prior to use;

Ensure heavy items are not placed on back of wheelchair;

Ensure wheelchair is not used in unsuitable locations and areas.

Inspect terrain for hazards on an ongoing basis;

Move down backward when pushing an occupied wheelchair down a kerb;

Move up forward when pushing an occupied wheelchair up a kerb;

Always keep the wheelchair occupant informed about what you are intending to do

Ensure appropriate manual handling techniques are employed when in use; and

Ensure that appropriate wheelchair access/egress is available.

3. POST-Operation:

Ensure seat and footplates are in the correct position and wheels brakes applied prior to person exiting the wheelchair; and

Operator to inspect work area to ensure that work surface is even and stable to prevent slips, trips and falls.

Fuel whipper snipper away from any possible sources of ignition.

Always turn off whipper snipper before replacing line.

2. Operation:

Keep hands, feet and loose clothing away from all moving parts.

Do not overreach and ensure proper footing and balance.

Never leave whipper snipper running unattended.

Ensure moving parts have come to a complete stop before performing any maintenance or cleaning.

Make sure motor is stopped and allowed to cool before refuelling.

Refuel only in a well-ventilated area away from possible ignition sources.

3. POST-Operation:

1. PRE-Operation:

Operator to inspect work area to ensure that work surface is even and stable to prevent rollover.


Wear the appropriate PPE.

Fuel vehicle away from any possible sources of ignition.

Ensure that the seatbelt, Roll Over Protective Structure (ROPS), Falling Objects Protective Structure (FOPS) (where fitted) and Power Take-Off (PTO) guard are in sound condition.

2. Operation:

Before starting the tractor, ensure all levers are in their neutral positions, the parking brake is engaged and the clutch and PTO are disengaged.

Never start or operate levers from anywhere other than the seat.

Drive at speed slow enough to keep control over unexpected hazards.

Do not operate near ditches, holes or embankments, which may collapse under the tractor’s weight.

Avoid slopes that are too steep for safe operation. Always reverse when going up a steep slope.

Do not dismount from a tractor unless the engine and the vehicle has completely stopped, the transmission is in park condition and the parking brake is fully engaged.

Park on even ground, disengage the PTO and lower all attached implements.

Ensure all moving parts have come to a complete stop before performing any maintenance or clearing.

Make sure engine is stopped and allowed to cool before refuelling.

Refuel in a well-ventilated area using appropriate PPE.

3. POST-Operation:

Clean equipment and store in appropriate place.

Make sure vehicle is isolated and cannot be started without authorised operator.

1. PRE-Operation:


Identify ON/OFF switch and emergency stop button and test any interlocking devises (if applicable).

Ensure chuck guard is in place.

Ensure outer spindle arm guard from the headstock is in place (if applicable).

Ensure the work piece has been suitably prepared for the lathe operation.

Ensure work piece is securely fastened to face plate, chuck or between centres depending on the task(??).

Adjust speed to suit the diameter of the work and turning operation.

Rotate the work piece by hand to check clearance between tool rest and bed.

Ensure the cutting tools are sharp and in good condition.

Start the dust extraction unit before using the machine.

Faulty equipment must not be used and must be immediately reported.

2.Operation:

Never leave the machine running while unattended.

Before making adjustments switch off and ensure the machine has come to a complete standstill.

Keep the tool rest adjusted close to the work and at the correct height.

Adjust speed to suit the diameter of the work and turning operation.

Stop the lathe and remove all tool rests before sanding.

3.POST-Operation:

Switch off the machine and reset all guards to a fully closed position.

Ensure good housekeeping practises are in place to minimise dust build-up.

Leave the machine in a safe, clean and tidy state.
