The Summer Equity and CURE internship programs are designed to provide hands-on clinical and research laboratory experiences for diverse students. The paid, eight-week internships are located in OHSU facilities in Portland, Oregon. Housing supported is provided t interns who live outside the Portland metro area. In 2015, the internships will run from June 15 through August 7. Application deadline is February 9; selected interns will be notified by April. Grant to Fund Study on Hearing Loss, Devices Lina Reiss, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, was recently awarded a five-year National Institutes of Health grant. The goal of the "Binaural Spectral Integration with Hearing Loss and Hearing Devices” project is to study how experience with hearing loss, hearing aids, and cochlear implants can affect how sounds are combined between ears. The findings will help better understand why some people don't do well with hearing aids and cochlear implants, and find ways to help those individuals. Visit the lab website at www.ohsu.edu/cihalab IEH Student Recognized for Excellence Jacob Phipps (Muscogee Creek), an environmental science and engineering student at OHSU’s Institute for Environmental Health, was featured in Winds of Change, the organizational magazine for the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES). A graduate of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Jacob won awards at AISES for his research in karst hydrology. Jacob’s Winds of Change profile highlights not only his contributions to science, but also his commitment to giving back to Native American communities. Read the article. Health Equity Efforts Focus on Supporting Families The Health Equity Circle at OHSU hosted a premiere screening of the new documentary "The Raising of America" created by California Newsreel. The film focuses on the need for national policies to support children and young families including early childhood development, maternity/paternity leave and affordable, quality childcare. More than 500 people attended the event, which was followed by a panel discussion. The panel told powerful stories of the difficulties of raising a child and the lack of options for parents. The panel also discussed ongoing efforts around the state to work on the issues. A follow-up meeting is in the works. For more info, connect with the Health Equity Circle. A Holistic Approach: Serving Transgender Youth OHSU students attended a talk on the history and contemporary best practices for healthcare for transgender youth by Jenn Burleton, Executive Director of TransActive Gender Center. The presentation, co-hosted by Students for LGBTQ Health, stimulated conversation among medical, physician assistant, and nursing students, and laid a foundation for more conversations on this topic in the future. “As one of only a handful of opportunities for health professional students to learn about transgender healthcare, the event was invaluable to our development as professionals, equipped to provide the best care for a diverse patients,” says medical student Molly Rabinowitz, one of the event organizers. “Gathering of Nations” a Huge Success Members and friends of the International and Native American employee resource groups gathered for a celebration of cultures and harvest traditions around the world. The potluck meal drew about 50 students, staff and faculty to the OHSU Student Center. Native American resource group leaders led a presentation about the history and heritage of American Indians and Alaska Native peoples, as well as a discussion about the United States Thanksgiving holiday from the perspective of Native American indigenous and tribal communities. A panel discussion about various harvest traditions around the world featured perspectives and stories from Pakistan, Sweden, the U.S., and more. At OHSU, there are seven established ERGs serving diverse employees: Ability Resource Group; African- American; Asian Pacific Islander (API); International; Latinos Unidos Organization; and OHSU Pride. Two groups – the Ability Resource Group and the API ERG – are currently seeking nominations for volunteer leaders. To learn more about the opportunities, email [email protected]. Led by Alisha Moreland Capuia, M.D., Department of Psychiatry. December 16: Diwali Celebration. 5:30pm at Center for Health and Healing. Potluck event features traditional Indian food and entertainment. A short program will focus on the cultural significance of the festival. Bring a dish to share. January 20: Ability Resource Group 5:30pm at the Elephants Deli, Collaborative Life Sciences Building. Social mixer hosted by the resource group for people with disabilities, advocates, and allies. January 21: Veterans ERG. 12-1pm at Marquam Room, next to Mac Hall Cafe. Meeting open to all active, retired, reserves, students and family members or friends of veterans. This meeting will be an opportunity to meet other veterans and their supporters. January 27: International ERG. 5:30pm at Old Spaghetti Factory, 715 SW Bancroft. Meet people from around the world at the Global Village Rendezvous networking event, open to the OHSU community. February 11: Lunar New Year. Join us in welcoming the Year of the Sheep! 5:30pm at the Center for Health and Healing. Hosted by the Asian Pacific American Medical Students Association and the API ERG. Bring a dish to share. February 12: Black History Month 11:45am at BICC Gallery. Talk by Christopher Evans, M.D., OHSU Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.
