Welcome  to  oikos  Copenhagen

Words  from  the  Chairman  of  oikos  Copenhagen    Today’s  pressing  issues  of  environmental,  social  and  economic  sustainability  make  this  the  most  exci<ng  and  challenging  <me  to  be  at  the  forefront  of  shaping  opinions,  seEng  examples  and  making  a  difference.  At  oikos  Copenhagen  we  believe  it  is  our  job  to  raise  awareness  about  those  issues  and  to  facilitate  knowledge  sharing  among  students,  businesses,  NGOs  and  government,  in  order  to  envision  the  next  genera<on  of  sustainable  economics  and  management.          This  guide  outlines  our  vision,  strategic  goals  and  organisa<onal  structure,  as  well  as  a  detailed  overview  of  our  different  teams.  As  you  read  through  it  and  learn  more  about  oikos  Copenhagen,  I  am  sure  you  will  make  a  be6er  sense  of  who  we  are,  what  we  do  and  how  we  do  it.      As  a  nonprofit  student  organisa<on,  oikos  Copenhagen  is  driven  by  passionate  people  who  have  the  ideas  and  the  freedom  to  shape  the  outlook  of  our  organisa<on.  Furthermore,  we  are  part  of  a  huge  interna<onal  network,  which  allows  us  to  have  our  voice  heard  around  the  globe.  This  guide  describes  the  opportuni<es  and  resources  available  to  our  members  and  I  hope  that  it  will  serve  you  as  a  point  of  departure  for  your  concepts  of  the  future!        Chairman,  Nikolay  Ivanov  oikos  Copenhagen    president@oikos-‐copenhagen.org

What  can  oikos  Copenhagen  offer  you?    •  Learning  opportuni<es  on  sustainability  •  A  great  network  –  both  private  and  professionally  •  A  chance  to  put  your  studies  into  prac<ce  •  The  opportunity  of  par<cipa<ng  in  interna<onal

conferences  through  oikos  Interna<onal  •  Possibili<es  for  internships/thesis  wri<ng  with  one  of

our  collaborators  •  Relevant  work  experience  for  your  CV

oikos  Copenhagen  gives  me  first-‐hand  prac5cal  and  theore5cal  knowledge  of  social,  economic,  and  environmental  sustainability.  Addi5onally,  I  have  come  to  understand  the  complexi5es  and  opportuni5es  of  organiza5onal  management.  Together  I  believe  these  aspects  can  benefit  my  future  career.

The  organiza<on  2:3

oikos  Copenhagen  =  a  local  chapter  in  oikos  InternaEonal  How  was  oikos  Copenhagen  established?

The  organiza<on  was  originally  named  360°    Students  for  Sustainability  and  became  a  Local  Chapter  in  oikos  Interna<onal  in  2011.  In  April  2013  the  organiza<on  changed  its  name  to  oikos  Copenhagen.      The  organiza<on  was  ini<ally  merged  in  September  2010,    a  union  between  two  former  CBS  student  organiza<ons  named  Develop  and  WELL  that  resulted  in  360°  .  WELL  was  founded  in  2002,  when  the  concept  CSR  (Corporate  Social  Responsibility)  was  s<ll  fairly  new.  WELL  focused  on  sustainable  consump<on  and  business  ethics  and  prac<ces.  Develop  started  in  2004  and  was  ac<ve  in  the  field  of  business  and  development.  Underlying  Develop’s  work  was  the  idea  of  trade  –  not  aid.  By  joining  forces  the  organiza<ons  were  able  to  draw  on  each  other’s  experience  and  contacts,  while  at  the  same  <me  ra<onalizing  the  administra<on  in  order  to  achieve  greater  efficiency.  As  a  result  of  the  fusion,  360˚  emerged  as  a  stronger  actor  in  the  sustainability  debate.      www.oikos-‐internaEonal.org

oikos  Copenhagen  is  a  local  chapter  in  the  interna<onal  student  organisa<on  called  oikos.  As  of  January  2011,  oikos  had  37  Local  Chapters  in  21  countries  worldwide.  They  represent  students  of  management  and  economics  with  a  combined  number  of  50.000  students.  oikos  Interna<onal  -‐  with  the  oikos  President  and  the  oikos  Execu<ve  Board  -‐  support  the  local  chapters  and  work  with  the  overall  strategy  of  the  oikos  organisa<on.    Members  of  oikos  Copenhagen  are  also  members  of  oikos  Interna<onal.  This  means  that  they  can  par<cipate  in  the  bi-‐annual  oikos  conferences.  They  can  also  stand  for  elec<on  as  oikos  President  or  oikos  Execu<ve  Board  member.    oikos  Local  Chapters,  including  oikos  Copenhagen,  walk  the  talk.  Their  members  are  highly  mo<vated  students  who  energe<cally  work  to  raise  awareness  about  sustainable  development,  as  well  as  work  towards  the  integra<on  of  sustainability  into  teaching  and  research  within  Management  and  Economics.  oikos  Local  chapters  independently  organise  events,  in  a  spirited  way  that  demonstrates  how  showing  responsibility,  hands-‐on  management  experience  and  fun  can  go  together.

The  organiza<on  3:3

OrganizaEonal  chart  What  does  oikos  Copenhagen  do?

Our  main  tool  in  increasing  awareness  about  sustainability  issues  is  organizing  events.  Our  Events  group  is  crea<ve  in  coming  up  with  interes<ng  ideas  for  workshops  and  events.  For  example,  past  events  included  a  presenta<on  on  and  discussion  about  microfinance,  the  CBS  Green  Week  and  the  Sustainable  Christmas  Bazaar,  to  men<on  a  few.  Springing  out  of  a  very  successful  event,  the  oikos  Film  Club  shows  films  that  are  part  of  the  sustainability  debate,  as  for  example  the  documentary  ‘Tapped’  which  inves<gated  the  bo6led  water  industry.  Once  a  month,  a  topical  film  is  shown  with  a  following  discussion.    Moreover,  Develop  Prize  is  a  compe<<on  that  aids  crea<ve  ini<a<ve  related  to  sustainable  business  models,  and  offers  a  chance  to  make  an  idea  into  a  viable  business  model.  Less  visible  but  equally  important,  oikos  Copenhagen  is  func<oning  due  to  members  performing  tasks  such  as  geEng  sponsors,  communica<ng  with  stakeholders  and  managing  the  budget.

The  Secretariat  consists  of  the  Chairman  and  Vice-‐Chairman,  as  well  as  all  the  Managers  from  the  different  teams.  At  their  bi-‐monthly  mee<ngs,  the  Secretariat  discusses  the  organiza<on’s  strategy  and  the  overall  direc<on  and  development  of  the  organiza<on

oikos  Academy

oikos  Academy  brings  together  professors,  company  representa<ves,  policy-‐makers,  and  students  to  learn  and  discuss  the  increased  relevance  of  sustainability  in  today’s  business  arena.  Through  five  sessions,  the  extra-‐curricular  elec<ve  aspires  to  plant  a  sustainable  seed  in  the  student’s  mind  so  that  future  businesses  might  not  only  focus  on  profit  maximizing  but  to  a  larger  degree  maximizing  value  for  society.    The  Academy  Team  is  responsible  for  the  planning  and  organiza<on  of  oikos  Academy.  This  includes  developing  an  intriguing  Academy  program  that  aims  to  a6ract  as  many  students  as  possible  as  well  as  ensuring  a  professional  execu<on  of  the  Academy  sessions.

oikos  Event  Lab

The  goal  of  oikos  Event  Lab  is  to  create  a  link  between  students,  companies,  and  NGOs  on  ini<a<ves  driven  by  CSR  and  sustainability  –  financially,  socially,  and  environmentally.  Prac<cally,  this  is  done  through  ac<vi<es  like:  Company  visits,  guest  speakers,  panel  debates,  case  compe<<ons,  and  social  arrangements  at  CBS  campus,  organized  and  implemented  by  the  members  of  the  team.      The  oikos  Event  Lab  holds  mee<ngs  each  month  upda<ng  on  the  progress  of  current  ac<vi<es,  evalua<ng  on  finished  ac<vi<es,  and  assigning  new  ac<vi<es.

oikos  Develop  Prize

Develop  Prize  is  all  about  Social  Entrepreneurship.  Develop  Prize  is  based  on  a  compe<<on  where  students  come  together  across  universi<es  to  create  innova<ve  ideas  with  business  poten<al  and  the  poten<al  to  solve  problems  in  the  developing  world.  But  it  is  so  much  more.  With  the  help  of  seasoned  experts  in  the  field,  these  students  make  each  other  think.  They  come  together  to  create  applica<on  for  their  ideas.  And  the  most  excellent  of  them  develop  businesses  that  make  a  difference  in  the  world.      The  compe<<on  runs  throughout  the  academic  year,  during  which  different  events  will  serve  as  inspira<on  and  encouragement  for  students  to  form  diverse  teams  and  develop  business  plans  to  address  development  challenges.  The  compe<<on  ends  with  a  big  final,  where  the  winning  team  gains  access  to  a  powerful  network  of  advisors  and  is  given  the  possibility  to  turn  their  business  idea  into  a  viable  business.

The  oikos  Develop  Prize  program  and  compeEEon  What  is  oikos  Develop  Prize?

developprize@oikos-‐copenhagen.org

Develop  Prize  was  our  first  business  plan  compe55on  and  it        was  a  great  and  learningful  experience.  It  helped  us  to  write  out  our        idea  and  discuss  our  plan  forward.  Based  on  these  discussions  and        our  research,  we  had  clearer  visions  of  how  to  move  forward.  During        the  Develop  Prize  Event,  none  of  us  could  be  there  because  we  were        so  busy  actually  developing  our  product  and  discovering  the  business        poten5al  for  Ruby  Cup  in  Kenya.  Our  advisor  Stefan  Maard  from

Novozymes  represented  us  and  did  a  really  great  job.  This  award  did  not  provide  any  capital,  but  it  provided  us  with  a  blueprint  that  we  could  leverage  in  our  applica5on  for  the  Innova5ons  Against  Poverty  grant  from  the  Swedish  Development  Agency,  the  first  financial  backer  of  our  project.  So  Develop  Prize  was  the  first  recogni5on  that  helped  us  move  on  and  truly  start  our  company.

General  informa<on

How  does  oikos  Copenhagen  work?  Where  can  you  find  oikos  Copenhagen  ?

hZp://cse.cbs.dk

As  we  are  partner  of  Copenhagen  School  of  Entrepreneurship  (CSE),  oikos  Copenhagen  has  its  office  at  CSE.    “CSE  is  for  students,  teachers,  researchers,  and  businesses  interested  in  diversified,  prac5cal,  and  knowledge-‐based  entrepreneurship.”                          Howitzvej  60,  1st  floor    2000  Frederiksberg  Copenhagen,  Denmark

oikos  Copenhagen  is  a  dynamic  organisa<on  that  is  largely  event-‐based.  This  means  that  our  work  vary  greatly  with  the  events  we  are  working  on  -‐  both  in  terms  of  types  of  tasks  and  assignments,  as  well  as  the  required  workload.  However,  there  are  some  things  that  never  change.  One  of  these  fundamentals  are  the  oikos  Copenhagen  monthly  mee<ngs,  where  all  members  of  the  organiza<on  come  together  to  hear  updates  from  the  different  groups  and  to  discuss  topical  issues.  On  occasion,  there  can  also  be  guest  speakers  or  skill  seminars.  In  addi<on  to  monthly  open  mee<ngs,  members  par<cipate  in  their  respec<ve  team  mee<ngs.    An  oikos  Copenhagen  project  cycle  typically  includes  the  members  coming  up  with  an  idea  for  an  event  or  project,  and  then  contact  relevant  partners  such  as  NGO  representa<ves,  Professors  or  business  professionals.  The  responsible  oikos  members  are  in  charge  of  the  planning,  execu<on  and  follow-‐up  of  the  event.  Throughout  this  process,  they  are  involved  in  financing,  organizing,  marke<ng,  and  communica<on.  Members  of  oikos  Copenhagen  must  drive  all  processes  themselves,  which  gives  them  invaluable  experience  in  project  management,  leadership  and  team  work.
