SAFETY CAUTIONS ?? Staring at laser light is harmful to eyes.

This equipment uses a small laser unit for its light source. Though its intensity is almost the same as the sun light, be careful not to see the light source and not to place any mirror reflective object in the light path. The reflected light from water and oil surfaces are not harmful.

?? The laser light source bears a high voltage (at least 10 kVDC). Be sure to turn off the power whenever

the upper cover is removed. ?? Be sure to ground the grounding terminal. ?? Cut off the power when the upper cover is removed in the hazardous area.

When a flameproof explosion protected vessel is opened in a flammable gas hazardous area (terminal board, upper cover etc.), cut the power by the external switch, or be sure to confirm that there is no flammable gas with a gas alarm unit.

1. GENERAL This product is the sensor alarm for continuous monitoring the presence of oil film on water surface and the ground. It utilizes the fact that the reflection of oil is larger than the reflection of water. Also it features that the water surface or the ground can be monitored from the point above and apart from the surface using a laser light source. Refer to section 7 (handling the oil film sensor alarm transmitter) as for the sensor alarm transmitter DHC-102.

SYSTEM

The outline of the instrument construction is as shown below. The reflection mirror and the light guide are mounted under the central base. Other parts are all mounted on the upper side of the base. They are protected by the upper and lower covers. The protection glass is attached to the bottom of the lower cover. The base is partly projected to the outside to form the terminal box to which a cover is attached. Cables are introduced into the terminal box from its bottom. The mounting bracket is attached to the base.

3. INSTALLATION 3.1 Sitting Requirements ?? A place free from vibration and mechanical impacts:

A large vibration causes swinging of the laser beam leading to inaccurate monitoring, and probably a reduced service life of the equipment.

?? A place of calm stream:

Stable and minimum ripples of the stream surface is important since the equipment utilizes reflection of the laser beam on the water surface.

?? A place of monitored water surface with no direct exposure to rain and strong wind, which may disturb

the water surface and oil film detection may be infeasible. ?? A place free from direct exposure to sun light:

Sun light has a large energy. Sun light reflection may disturb oil film detection.

?? A place of no water vapour generated from the water surface: Water vapour on the water surface makes the reflected light unstable causing water droplets on the surface of the protection glass.

?? Proximity of sensor as near the water surface as possible:

Take care so as bot to allow water splashes on the protection glass surface. The protection glass can be easily cleaned.

?? Gathering floating oil at one point:

In the case of a wide waterway, collect the floating oil at a point so that it passes the monitored area by (for example, placing floats on the water surface).

3.2 Examples of installation 1. Anchor bolts as shown below are supplied with the equipment. Fasten the equipment to the floor by

three anchor bolts. (See the installation example) 2. Hole positions for installation are as illustrated. The floor should be horizontal. 3. Adjust the mounting angle with three mounting bolts so that the body stands upright. The mounting

NOTE : Refer to section 7 for the transmitter DHC 102 3.3.2. Wiring procedure The power source must have an independent switch with a grounding resistance below 100 ? . ?? Remove four box screws that tighten the terminal box cover with the supplied Allen wrench. The

terminal board is inside. ?? Two cable ports (G3/4 F) are on the bottom surface of the terminal box. Cables should be routed in

conduits. Cautions : Seal the cable port not in use to prevent humidity entrance. When an inductive load relay is connected to the alarm output, connect surge absorbing elements at both ends of the load relay coil to absorb the surge noise that comes from the load.

?? After completion of wirings, tightly attach the box cover. 3.3.3. Output line ??When the output is used, connect an indicator or a recorder which meet specifications.

?? The output line serves as the reflected light quantity reducing signal line. When the laser tube is failed or

when the light axis largely deviates, the output increases toward the full scale. ?? Since the transmission signal always varies according to the wave size on the water surface, a dot

recorder is suitable. ??When the recorder largely varies and hard to read, combine the equipment with a transmitter equipped

with the peak hold function (DHC 102). 4. OPERATION AND ADJUSTMENT 4.1. Procedure before starting operation ?? Cleaning of protector glass :

Wipe the protector glass at the bottom of body with a soft and clean cotton cloth (laundered gauze etc). Refer to 5.2

?? Turn the power switch to ON. ??When the laser spot is split to several pieces, adjust the laser spot. Refer to 5.4 ?? Adjust the light axis. Refer to 4.2 ?? Confirm the operation. Refer to 4.3 ??When a trifle oil film is to be detected, switch the alarm to the no-delay alarm. Refer to 4.4

??When water vapour is present on the water surface, or when droplets are adhered on the protector glass, take necessary actions. Refer to 4.5

4.2 Light axis adjustment Perform light axis alignment on a day of no wind and no ripples on water, or under no ripples condition. ?? Remove the terminal box cover while the equipment is in operation. ?? Connect a digital multimeter (capable of measuring 4-20 mADC) leads to output terminals (70, 71) in the

terminal box. Note : When the output is not 4-20 mADC, use a digital voltmeter of a suitable range.

?? Place a polyethylene beaker with water in it on the operation check kit to hold the beaker beneath the oil

film monitor as near the water level as possible.

Cautions : Do not use a glass beaker to prevent laser reflection on the glass surface. The beaker diameter should be larger than 10 cm.

?? Visually confirm that the laser beam spot is located on the water surface in the beaker. ?? Slightly loosen mounting bolts A and B, move the body to right and left, and back and forth watching the

output on the connected digital multimeter. Fasten bolts A and B when the output reads the max. value (about 10 mA when the range is 4-20 mA).

?? Remove the polyethylene beaker and the operation check kit, and attach the terminal box cover.

Note : In the starting procedure, or in the light axis adjustment, when the alarm does not work and the output alone rises above 100 % FS, follow the procedure of 4.5 (3).

?? Confirm the operation by making actual oil film on water surface. Heavy oil A makes oil film quickly, and the film is easily checked by eyes.

Caution : In the case of such oil whose film does not spread, the film may not be detected since the film surface is not horizontal.

??When it is difficult to drip oil on the flowing water surface, place a beaker with floating oil film in the

operation check kit, and hold the kit near the flowing water surface to confirm the operation. ??When oil film is detected for more than 30 continuous seconds, the output rises above 60 % FS and the

alarm is delivered. The above time period is increased when the water surface has ripples. ??When the transmission signal is to be recorded: the transmission signal exhibits about 40 %FS for a

stationary water surface, and more than 60 % FS when oil film is detected. Note : If the alarm is inoperative and the output alone rises above 100 % FS, check the system in accordance with description of 4.5 (3).

?? Confirm that the alarm is reset about 10 ~ 20 seconds after disappearance of the oil film. 4.4 Alarm switching Unless otherwise specified, the equipment is shipped with setting of "delayed alarm". When a trace oil film has to be detected, switch the alarm to "no-delay alarm". 4.4.1 Function of delayed alarm In the delayed alarm mode, the alarm is delivered when oil film on stationary water surface is detected for continuous 10 seconds (approximately). In most cases, however, the reflected light from continuous oil film returns back intermittently because of ripples on the water surface. For ordinary ripples, the alarm is delivered when the intermittent reflected light from continuous oil film lasts for about 30 seconds. For the above reason, the alarm delivery may be disturbed when oil films flow at an interval time within about 10 seconds. When such trace oil film as mentioned above has to be detected, switch the mode to "no-delay alarm" by the following procedure. 4.4.2 Switching procedure to "no-delay alarm" ?? Turn off the power.

?? Remove box head screws that fasten the upper cover with the supplied wrench to draw off the upper cover upward. The interval printed circuit board (PCB) can be seen.

Caution : Do not remove the upper cover on a day of 70 % or more humidity to prevent insulation drop of electrical and electronical circuits.

SLIDE SWITCH ON PCB ?? Turn the slide switch on the PCB to S to switch the mode to "no-delay alarm". ?? Attach the upper cover as it was and turn on the power. ?? Confirm that the mode has been switched to "no-delay alarm" by the procedure of 4.3 4.5 Various actions required for operation 4.5.1 Water vapour on water surface The water surface of warm waste water may be occasionally filled with the water vapour. Excessively dense water vapour scatters the incidental light and the reflected light reducing the light intensity, and therefore, the sensing ability of the equipment drops. In such a case, send wind to the water surface to blow off the water vapour without making ripples on the water surface. 4.5.2. Water droplets on protector glass The protector glass is located inside the lower cover by about 20 cm to prevent water droplet adhesion, but when water drops are present on the glass, take the following action: ?? Separate the equipment from the water surface as far as possible. ?? Install the optional air-curtain devices. 4.5.3. Switching the reflected light quantity drop signal. Unless otherwise specified, the equipment is shipped with the reflected light quantity drop signal set to ON. this signal raises the output above 100 % as the a normality alarm when the reflected light quantity dropped

below 10 % of the value in the stationary state lasts for more than a minute. For example, when the laser tube is failed, when dusts stagnate on the laser spot, when the light axis deviated, or when the reflected light from the water surface cannot be received, the oil film becomes undetectable, and instead, this reflected light quantity drop signal operates. Therefore, check the monitored water surface and the laser tube when the output alone rises above 100 % FS without the alarm being in operation. (Refer to 5.2 through 5.6). When oil leak sensing is practiced on a concrete floor in an empty pit, turn off the reflected light quantity drop signal beforehand in accordance with the following procedure. Note : By turning off the signal, the output will not rise above 100 % FS even if the reflected light quantity drops.

SNAP SWITCH (SW4) ON PCB Procedure ? ?Turn off the power. ? ?Remove box head screws that fasten the upper cover with the supplied wrench to draw off the upper

cover upward. the interval printed circuit board (PCB) can be seen. Caution : Do not remove the upper cover on a day of 70 % or more humidity to prevent insulation drop of electrical and electronical circuits.

? ?Turn the snap switch (SW4) on the PCB to OFF to turn off the reflected light quantity drop signal. ? ?Attach the upper cover as it was and turn on the power.

Note : When the reflected light quantity drop is ON and the light axis is largely deviated in the start-up procedure, the output rises above 100 % FS. When the light axis is hard to adjust like this, turn the snap switch (SW4) to OFF to adjust the light axis, and turn the signal to ON again before restarting measurement.

Degradation of insulation in the electronics causes a damage to the laser power source failure. To prevent the insulation failure, a desiccant (silica gel) unit is mounted on the side of the laser power source. Whenever the upper cover is removed for check, be sure to check the desiccant. If the silica gel is reddish, replace it by fresh desiccant. 5.8 Cleaning of laser tube mirror The mirror within the laser tube bears a high static voltage gathering ambient dust and mist which make the laser beam spot obscure leading to measurement failure. Clean the mirror of the laser tube in such a case. ? ?Turn off the power. ? ?Remove the laser tube in accordance with the procedure of 5.3. ? ?Insert an applicator into the tip mouth of the laser tube to remove fouling from the internal mirror.

LASER TUBE MIRROR SECTION CLEANING ? ?Mount the laser tube in accordance with the procedure of 5.3 and adjust the laser spot, light axis and

sensitivity in accordance with description of 5.4, 5.5 and 5.6. Caution : When the upper cover is removed for starting up and inspection, choose the time of minimum dust and minimum humidity with clean atmosphere.

? ?The method by the difference in buoyancy. ? ?The method by the difference in reflection coefficient. ? ?The method by the difference in dielectric constant.

(Classification by installation method)

? ?Floating on water surface ? ?Installation apart from water surface. This equipment utilizes the reflection coefficient difference by the equipment installed apart from water surface. We frequently experience that the oil film on water surface looks glaring in everyday life. this is due to the fact that oil reflects visible light better than water; that is to say, reflection coefficient of oil is larger than that of water. When the incident light comes to the boundary surface of two substance with different reflection coefficients, the reflection coefficient is calculated as follows. Reflection coefficient

Toluene 1.50 Cod liver oil 1.48 Reflection coefficients of various liquids are as listed above. Oils are not pure substances and their reflection coefficients have some ranges. The list gives approximate values. As known from these values,

Reflection coefficient of water surface: 2 % Reflection coefficient of oil film: 3 ? 4 %

Then, the reflection coefficient exhibits an increase of 50 ? 100 % by the presence of oil film. Therefore, when the water surface is irradiated by a light of constant intensity such as laser beam, oil film can be detected by the intensity of reflected light. When the beam is projected to the ground and concrete, each surface is rough and reflected light is scattered with very small intensity. But the surface exhibits the same reflection coefficient as oil film when the water surface is covered with a smooth oil layer. Therefore, a dry pit can be used with this equipment. Generally, the detection limit of oil film can be visually recognized. The film thickness is not more than 1 µm, and the reflected light intensity does not increase with the increase of thickness but keeps a constant reflected light intensity. As shown in the previous table, almost all oils have a reflection coefficient above 1.40. Therefore, oil film detection is possible if only a smooth oil film can be formed. 6.2 Block diagram This equipment consists of the laser tube driven by its power source, the chopper to chop the projected light with a motor, the hollow reflection mirror to collect the reflected light from oil surface at one point, the light receiver installed at the focus of the mirror to convert the reflected light to current, its amplifier, the alarm circuit to process the amplified signals, and their power supply.

7 HANDLING THE OIL SENSOR TRANSMITTER 7.1 Safety cautions for transmitter ? ?Be sure to ground the grounding terminal. ? ?The interior of the equipment bears 100 VAC. ? ?This equipment is not the explosion protected type. Install this equipment at a non-hazardous area. 7.2 Transmitter configuration This transmitter is exclusively for the oil film monitor/alarm. It is used when the flow of the waterway is too fast causing a swinging range of sensor output, and the record is hard to read, or when the alarm setting point is desired to be freely variable. The oil film sensor output should be connected to the transmitter. (Refer to the block diagram.) Functions of the transmitter are as follows: ? ?The transmitter receives the output signal of the oil film sensor, and holds the maximum output value in

the set time (2.5 ? 80 seconds, switch able 6 steps) with the peak hold circuit of variable sampling time to provide the output signal during the set time. This operation is repeated to make the record legible.

? ?It is possible to lower the sensor output (10 ? 11 mA DC) near zero (4 ? 6 mA DC), for stationary water

(with or without oil film) and to provide an indication only when oil film is detected by adjusting the ZERO trimmer.

? ?When stationary water (with or without oil film) is set at zero, scale over in the negative direction may

occur by the sensor output variation. This equipment has a built-in limiter circuit to prevent the transmitter output from dropping below the set zero point (by turning the limiter for low limit to ON).

? ?It is possible to magnify the difference between the output for stationary water (with or without oil film)

and the output for oil film presence to facilitate indication reading and judgment by adjusting the SPAN trimmer.

BLOCK DIAGRAM OF TRANSMITTER ? ?The alarm point can be freely set in the range of 0 ? FS (4-20 mA DC) after reducing the output for

stationary water (with or without oil film) near zero (4-6 mA DC) and adjusting the output for oil film detection near FS (full-scale, 15-20 mA DC). (Adjust the alarm setting trimmer)

? ?Confirm the power switch within the transmitter is in the OFF. Connect 100 VAC to terminals 90, 91 the

transmission (input) line from oil film sensor to terminals 70 (+), 71 (-), and the transmission (output) line to terminals 72 (+), 73 (-). Note : The grounding terminal on the bottom surface of the casing may be used for grounding.

Cautions : When a relay of a large capacity is connected across alarm contact signal terminals, use a surge absorbing element in parallel with the load relay coil. When the output signal is not used but only the alarm contact is used, short circuit the terminals 72, 73 .

7.5 Adjustment and operation of transmitter 7.5.1 Zero/Span adjustment ? ?Set the sample time at 5 (seconds). Turn down the limiter switch for low limit and the alarm/measure

selector switch. ? ?Adjust the ZERO trimmer so that the transmitter output reads 0-10 % (approx. 4-6 MADC) when there is

no oil film at the measurement spot. ? ?Adjust the SPAN trimmer so that the transmitter output reads 70-100% (15-20 mA) when oil film is

present at the measurement spot (or when polyethylene beaker filled with heavy oil A is placed at the measurement spot). In this case, the transmitter output is delayed by the sample time (5 seconds in the present case).

? ?After completion of zero/span calibration, turn the limiter switch(low limit) upward (ON) When the receiver that indicates the transmitter output is apart from the transmitter, adjustment should be made by connecting a digital multimeter (0-20 mA, internal resistance 5 ? or less to current check terminals (red : +, black : -). 7.5.2 Alarm setting
