Situation- The original Borsig compressor drive motor (supplied in 1979) had been inspected and

cracks were found in the rotor frame. As this machine was production critical it was decided that it was not cost effective to remove and repair due to the estimated time out of operation.

Challenge- Build and install a new drop in replacement motor to reduce expensive and unexpected

platform shutdown. The new motor was made to industry standards and supplied to the client in time for their planned annual shutdown to minimise the impact on production. Additionally development of a detailed change out procedure to allow for the location , weight and size of the machine in question.

Parsons Peebles Solution- Replacement machine was specified to have minimum interface changes with original- Detailed offshore survey was carried out to carry out risk assessments and develop

scope for change out- New machine was assembled, tested then dismantled to allow for transport and

installation in stages

Parsons Peebles Situation Continued- Plan was developed in conjunction with various disciplines in customers organisation to

ensure smooth and speedy turnaround- Project was successfully executed within a tight time frame (4 weeks)

Customer Benefit- Machine upgrade from EXN to EXP to comply with current legislation- Downtime minimised due to detailed planning and speedy execution- Parsons Peebles provided a ‘one stop shop’ for this turnkey offshore project. From

supply of a bespoke replacement machine through scope development and execution of change out. This negated the need for any costly ‘tier 1’ contractor involvement and limited the requirement for management of change processes. This saved the customer in the region of £500k excluding any costs for lost production.

Situation- Parsons Peebles were requested to evaluate the potential to obtain increased output

power from an existing pump drive motor. Thereafter Parsons Peebles were requested to evaluate the feasibility of supplying a new-build strategic spare which could be used at two different locations on the same installation

- While the units are similar they were for completely different applications, one a Pump Drive the other a Compressor Drive with other discrete differences in the configuration of the machines

- The Customer’s intention being to potentially use the hybrid to temporarily replace the existing machines to then avail removal of same for overhaul in a shore based workshop while maintaining Pumping and Compression production capability

Challenge- While the units are similar they were for completely different applications, one a Pump

Drive the other a Compressor Drive with other discrete differences in the configuration of the machines

- The new machine to be utilised as a spare for the existing machines to permit removal of the existing machines for maintenance overhaul at a shore based workshop whilst maintaining Pumping and Compression capability for production

- To evaluate the existing Crude Oil Export Pump Motor design for a higher output power in the existing machine or a revised design in the same footprint

- To evaluate the provision of a single New Build strategic spare at the higher rating which could be utilized in place of both the Pump Drive and the Compressor Drive machines

Challenge (continued)- To evaluate the interface with all existing facilities, main cabling and instrumentation

cabling on the two units to be accommodated by new single machine Parsons Peebles Solution

- Design evaluation shows the requested higher power can be accommodated- While the two existing machines have differently configured shaft extensions one

tapered with oil pressure assembly and one parallel – the solution will be to provide one parallel extension with new couplings for each application required

- The main supply cabling is on the same side of the two machines but at different entry angles differing by 90 degrees – to be accommodated by common neck and 90 degrees change facility

- The main bearings on the two machines are the same diameter but differently cooled –one with circulating oil the other with a water cooling arrangement – a hybrid bearing will resolve

- Both machines are water cooled but have their supply and return headers on opposite sides of the machine – pipework management to resolve (example below)

- The instrumentation terminal box cabling connections are on different sides of the two machines – cable and box management will resolve

Customer Benefit- Savings of £300k by procuring 1 critical spare machine vs 2 machines- Additional savings by matching existing electrical/mechanical footprint exactly- Production losses limited due to rapid reconfiguration of spare machine and approved

RAMS in place in the event of failure

Situation- Parsons Peebles Service assistance requested to attend on an off-shore installation to

inspect and replace suspect bearings on two M.O.L. Pump Motors- The motors, a series of three vertical pump drive motors originally designed and built by

NEI Peebles, have had a history of bearing problems with incorrect bearings fitted by others

Challenge- Bearing issues on two M.O.L. Pump Motors result in risk of Platform shut down.- Continuation of failures resulted in a lack of confidence in reliability going forward- Urgent action required off-shore to inspect bearing assemblies and wherever possible

replace the bearings and return the units to production

Parsons Peebles Solution- Short term solution implemented by ensuring speedy bearing change out on 2 machines

and availability of spare components for quick turnaround should failures occur- Full failure RCA carried out by Peebles with client support- It was discovered that due to the pump operating dramatically below its design duty

point that the power required from the motor was approx 30% of design load- The original bearings were operating below the minimum limits of radial load resulting

in ‘skidding’ of bearings- Peebles carried out full re-design of bearing assemblies to suit the new load while

ensuring the integrity and certification of machine were unaffected Proposed Bearing Arrangement

SituationMachine had suffered with a history of cooler leaks and after a trip on start-up an inspection thereafter inside the machine revealed a major winding failure

ChallengeDue to the size, weight & location of the machine on the platform a detailed change out procedure had to be developed as the machine could not be removed or installed in one piece. Also a formal root cause analysis had to be completed and solutions implemented to ensure continued confidence in machine reliability

Operational ImprovementsMachine upgrades provide confidence in future reliability by eliminating the failure mode experienced. Platform generation exposure reduced with speedy execution of scope. Plan for regular service interventions introduced to identify & resolve potential issues before they arise

Parsons Peebles Solutions- Inspection of winding failure identified that a significant proportion of the core had

been damaged eliminating the possibility of rewinding in-situ- Detailed offshore survey was carried out in conjunction with incumbent lifting

specialists to carry out risk assessments and develop scope for the complex stator removal and re-installation

Parsons Peebles Solution - Machine was receipted into our works where a replacement stator had been supplied

by peebles and was subsequently changed out with the failed stator- RCA identified that the historical cooler leaks were due to excessive corrosion of tubes- Coolers were upgraded to double tube design of titanium construction to eliminate

future leaks- Insulation system upgraded to include a ‘double dip & bake of the windings. This gives

improved protection and resistance to contamination- Plan was developed in conjunction with various disciplines in customer`s organization

to ensure smooth and speedy turnaround- Project was successfully executed within tight timeframe- Parsons Peebles provided full turnkey support to manage the execution of this project

SituationThe existing LP sea water injection LSE motors on Scott platform had a history of winding failures and failed rotor bars resulting is costly downtime and lost production

ChallengeParsons peebles were approached to investigate the feasibility of replacing the 4 machines in the fleet with there own machines which have a superior keyed bar rotor construction to eliminate the reliability issues encountered. This study involved:-

- Full engineering design review- Offshore survey - Confirm motor as per drawing- Identify local restrictions to motor removal / installation- Details of instruments etc., not shown on general arrangement drawing

Situation- This main generator on North Alwyn was originally supplied only as ‘desert rated’ due

to availability and urgent requirement of operator at the time but had been in operation for eight years in its North Sea offshore environment. The end user wanted us to fully assess the current condition and overhaul in line with findings

- The machine being of ABB manufacture, Parsons Peebles took on the upgrade project due to our experience with servicing third party equipment

Challenge- Originally the end user wanted us to fully assess the current condition, restore to ‘as

new’ condition and prove the machines mechanical & electrical integrity by performing a test on load. However on the strip down it was found that although the water ingress on the main machine was minimal there had been severe ingress & corrosion on the exciter due to it only being desert rated. It was requested that Parsons Peebles modify the machine to reduce future corrosion

Parsons Peebles Solution- The machine was returned to as new condition and load tested successfully within the

clients tight timeframe. The exciter sealing arrangement was upgraded to limit future water ingress

Customer Benefit- The Parsons Peebles exciter cover modification will allow this desert rated machine to

be more appropriately operated in an offshore environment without the severe water ingress previously experienced

Induction Motors & Generators

Parsons Peebles can test induction motors at 50 or 60 Hertz to BS EN/IEC60034 with ratings up to 15,000 kW. Testing to IEEE (USA) requirements can also be undertaken. No load losses and magnetisation characteristic. Temperature rise using direct loading via the differential

gearbox, the superposition method or by C. V. F. (continuously varied frequency, known as Primary Superposed Frequency in the USA).

Direct on line starting capability at both 50 and 60 Hz within the capability of Peebles test 40 MVA generator.

Locked rotor tests and starting torque measurement. This is limited to 2000 kW of losses (mostly rotor loss) in the motor under test, by the power that can be provided by the 40 MVA generator set.

Vibration measurement, recording and analysis, using the Bently Nevada ADRE equipment, and balancing on rotor end planes. The output can be downloaded onto disc for further analysis

Winding HV testing up to 33 kV with 100 kVA capacity Purging and pressurising certification testing of Ex p machines

for hazardous areas Noise testing

Synchronous Motors & Generators

We can test synchronous motors and generators at 50 or 60 Hertz with ratings up to 40 MVA but there is no firm cut-off point. Testing is limited by the generating capacity on the site. By using open circuit and short circuit heat runs machines up to

100 MVA can be tested Open and short circuit loss characteristics would be established Heat runs can be carried out at rated excitation, zero power

factor up to 35 MVA. For all ratings the heat runs can be performed utilising short circuit, open circuit and unexcited runs

Sudden three phase short circuit tests, time constants and reactances

Negative and zero sequence reactances can be measured Overspeed tests can be carried out on all but 2 pole generators Vibration measurement, recording and analysis, using the Bently

Nevada ADRE equipment, and balancing on rotor end planes. The output can be downloaded onto disc for further analysis

Winding and sample coil HV testing up to 33 kV with 100 kVA capacity

All rigid shaft generator rotors would be balanced in their own bearings. In addition we can trim balance two pole flexible rotors utilising accessible balancing planes

With conventional cage rotors, bar fracture usually occurs either just inside or just outside the slot.

The fracturing appears to be due not so much to the severity of duty or presence of vibration but to excessive looseness of the bar in its slot

Parsons Peebles design ensures and extremely tight and permanent fit resulting in lack of failure and increased machine availability

Advantages of Resin Rich

Rigid resins are used in slot cell section of the coil and different resins with resilience to coil movement are used in the endwinding i.e. resin containing flexibilisers

Capability to control Pd in the slot and remedial action in service is practical during insulation system life

Insulation resistance will be good when insulation system fully cured

Partial repairs are practical - i.e. coils which have failed can be replaced particularly when stator wound with half bars

Any machine can be rewound with resin rich insulation system wither in works or on site

Endwinding bracing systems can be improved & made more robust to meet operational requirements

Disadvantages of Resin Rich More expensive than VPI Endwinding can contain voids, but since the endwinding

surface becomes charged to coil voltage, breakdown of internal voids is not a problem other than at the first bend under the stress grading tape

Endwinding insulation and blocking is not a homogeneous system therefore more dependant on competence of winders

Resin rich coils in the endwinding can be more prone to chemical attack than VPI windings. However when a problem like this has been identified it is possible to spray the endwinding with a 2 part epoxy resin coating

Resin rich windings need to be coated with either a polyester varnish or epoxy resin to provide a smooth surface finish

Disadvantages of VPI As VPI is used on larger and larger machines (i.e. up to 500MW) the VPI

impregnation process introduces new problems during the life of the winding Due to differential expansion between individual stator bars the coil to coil

bracing in the endwinding results in loosening of the bracing between coils which will requiring regular rectification during the life of the machine

There are a range of resins used in the VPI process The lower viscosity resins used by manufactures are difficult to maintain and need a high resin turnover

Retaining resin in the stator winding during curing generally requires stator rotation during the curing process, which is easier for manufacturers who wind a stator core pack before inserting the cured stator core pack into the stator case

Will not fill voids greater than 1mm in width The much more stable higher viscosity resins used in the VPI process by repair

companies can cope with the sporadic usage which occurs in a repair facility However because of the higher viscosity these types of resin have limitations

on the voltage since the resin will not penetrate through more that 6 half lap layers of insulation limiting it to 8kV windings or 13.8kV endwindings of a hybrid winding

The much more stable higher viscosity resins used in the VPI process by repair companies can cope with the sporadic usage which occurs in a repair facility

However because of the higher viscosity these types of resin have limitations on the voltage since the resin will not penetrate through more that 6 half lap layers of insulation limiting it to 8kV windings or 13.8kV endwindings of a hybrid winding

Conclusion:Parsons Peebles recommend resin rich for new machines but offer repair services and replacement coils for both types
