The North makes up only 25% of the human family yet we consume 85% of the worlds energy

Page 2: Oil

Why do you think developed countries use more energy than non-developed countries?

Page 3: Oil

Renewable energy can be used repeatedly without being used up. These are also called Non-finite energies

Non-renewable energy is energy that will eventually be used up. These are also called finite energies.

Page 4: Oil

Can you think of any examples of non-finite and finite energy resources?

(if you don’t remember what finite and non-finite resources are, look in your books in the chapter on Oil)

The next slide has some pictures of these

Page 7: Oil

The countries in the darkest colours use the most oil. Can you name some of these countries?

Page 8: Oil

What ways do we use oil as an energy source?

Page 9: Oil

The countries coloured in orange have oil underneath the ground /sea

Page 10: Oil

The Persian Gulf include the states of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, The UAE

Page 11: Oil

Which country in the world produces the most oil?

Which country in the world uses the most oil?

Explain how an oil discovery in a country can be a positive thing.

Explain how an oil discovery in a country can be a negative thing.

Name a country where oil has had a positive effect and one where oil has had a negative effect.

Page 12: Oil

The price of oil can go up and down depending on demand.

Page 13: Oil

Saudi Arabia produces ¼ of the world’s crude oil

Saudi Arabia produces more oil than any other country in the world.

Since the 1930’s Saudi Arabia has changed from a country where most people lived in the desert to one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

Oil will eventually run out in Saudi Arabia as it is a FINITE energy resource

It is important that the country develops other aspects of it’s economy

Page 14: Oil

Large deposits of oil may exist under the seabed around our coastline

The largest deposits have been found in the Kinsale Head Gas Field

Gas from Kinsale has been used to supply gas to Dublin and other cities.

Gas has also been discovered in the Corrib Gas Field.

Page 15: Oil

Can you think of any disadvantages of having oil/gas deposits in Ireland?

Oil spillages

Global Warming

Page 17: Oil

1. Sea areas are divided into blocks 2. Companies (multinational

companies) then rent these blocks 3. Rock studies are carried out to test

for oil and gas 4. Test holes are drilled to see how

much oil is there 5. Oil is then drilled and brought ashore

through a pipeline.

Page 18: Oil
Page 19: Oil

Untreated gas is much more likely to explode than treated gas. Cleaning the gas at sea would be safer

The pipeline is safe because it is thick and strong

The gas can provide energy for our homes and schools

It will provide jobs

Page 20: Oil

Cleaning the gas at sea is expensive! Untreated gas will contain particles of

sand that could damage the pipeline The pipeline would be close to people’s

homes
