Aquila is an exciting restored hybrid variety with good gross output potential for the E/W region of the UK, combined with good lodging and excellent disease resistance, as well as a high oil content.

Pod shatter resistance is a very important characteristic in OSR as those varieties that carry a high degree of pod shatter resistance, such as Aquila, can make a real difference to seed losses, both before and at harvest.

The key attribute for OSR varieties going forward is disease resistance and Aquila has a very useful portfolio of disease resistance, offering an AHDB resistance rating of 8 for phoma (stem canker), as well as a very good rating of 6 for light leaf spot.

Aquila has demonstrated superb autumn and spring vigour - vital when conditions are less than ideal or for when it is late drilled after a preceding wheat crop.

Aquila is a medium-tall variety with very stiff straw, and is early to mature.

“ Based on its high gross output potential, very good

disease resistance and sound agronomics, Aquila offers the key requirements for a grower

this autumn.

the variety is a complete package and readily deserves very strong

“Beckii Gibbs Seed Manager, United Oilseeds

“ Artic is an exciting OSR Candidate variety that has an outstanding agronomic merit rating of 39.9.

Merit rating is calculated using AHDB ratings as: Lodging + Stem Stiffness + (1.5 x Stem Canker) + (2 x Light Leaf Spot).

As Artic has a double ‘7’ rating for light leaf spot and stem canker with no weaknesses, you can see that Artic is easy to manage with the

potential for excellent returns.

“ With its vigorous growth habit, fast early development, good

disease profile, early maturity and pod shatter resistance, Archimedes is an attractive

proposition for growing in the traditional clubroot areas of Scotland, as well as on

infected land in the East and West.

David Leaper Technical Seed Manager, Agrii

“Archimedes offers superior agronomic attributes over other commercial clubroot resistant varieties, giving growers a better proposition for on farm performance as the variety demonstrates traits such as early plant vigour combined with good autumn development.

Archimedes has the highly desirable and valuable traits of earlier flowering and early maturity, combined with pod shatter resistance.

“ Vasilis Gegas Senior Oilseed Rape Breeder, Limagrain UK

“ Archimedes has better autumn vigour and it is earlier to flower and mature than Mentor - key characteristics to growing a successful OSR crop. In fact, it is the earliest variety in our entire

European oilseed rape portfolio. These attributes, along with Archimedes’ superior stem canker resistance and excellent pod shatter

resistance, make it a much better bet on farm than Mentor.

It is a medium to tall variety in height, with good lodging resistance and stem stiffness.

Growing a successful OSR crop has never been more challenging; establishment issues related to pest damage as a result of the

neonicotinoid ban, increasing threat from diseases such as light leaf spot and variable yields from season to season, all take a toll on performance.

Vasilis Gegas, Senior Oilseed Rape Breeder with Limagrain UK, believes that the UK-focussed OSR breeding programme that he

leads is producing varieties such as Anastasia, Amalie and Nikita which offer specific attributes which are of value to the UK grower.

• Limagrain introduced the first variety offering Turnip Yellows

Virus (TuYV) resistance, Amalie, to the marketplace. For many growers in the UK TuYV is a real issue, making Amalie an excellent choice for risk management in the post neonicotinoid era

• Recommended in 2015, Amalie is an exciting conventional, open pollinated variety with good gross output potential at [97%] of control in the

north and 99% of control in the East/West

• Amalie has sound agronomic characters plus an excellent disease resistance profile. The variety offers robust resistance to light leaf spot (6) and stem canker (5)

• Amalie is short-medium in height with very stiff stems and very good lodging resistance.

• Amalie is medium-early to flower and mature

Looking ahead to the autumn, Dr Alan Dewar of Dewar Crop Protection urges growers to strongly consider the role that varietal resistance to TuYV can play.

It’s exciting news for OSR growers that the variety Amalie has proven itself to be completely resistant to TuYV and I am confident with this claim, having had some testing done myself.

• Nikita is a very high yielding conventional

variety that over the past three years in trials, has delivered very consistent performances with a gross output of 110% of control; on par with Campus

• Once a problem for the north and Scotland, light leaf spot is now becoming an increasing issue across the whole of the UK. A critical factor in controlling LLS is the integration of

varietal resistance into rape programmes

• With exceptionally good LLS resistance (7) Nikita is a very high yielding conventional variety that should be selected as an important element in the fight against this very damaging disease

Left unchecked, LLS can depress yield by more than one tonne per hectare. Fungicides, of course, can play an important role in controlling the disease but inherent, genetic

resistance such as that offered by Nikita, will give an underlying protection that is invaluable when weather conditions are not favourable to spraying the crop. David Waite, Frontier’s Northern Seed Manager

• Nikita has the short stiff stems that growers prefer for ease of harvest, and very good lodging resistance.

• Nikita is also medium to flower and mature

• Anastasia is a very vigorous conventional variety with consistent yield performance in the north

• Anastasia has competed with hybrid varieties in trials over several seasons with a very high gross output potential; 110% control, 2% above DK Explicit

• Anastasia also performs well in trials

further south

• The excellent performance of Anastasia beyond the stated boundaries of the northern RL, is most likely due to the good variety’s resistance to Light Leaf Spot (6); the same as SY Harnas and Campus

• Anastasia is the shortest non-semi dwarf on the North RL, with very stiff stems and very good resistance to lodging, making it easy to manage and harvest

• The variety is medium-early to flower and mature, spreading risk at farm level

Anastasia has a rapid autumn development, similar to many hybrids, which is an important characteristic for later drilling, as the crop can get up and out of the ground quickly. Les Daubney, Oilseeds Product Manager, Limagrain
