This group of Red Hat members visited the Okeechobee Historical

Museum on April 25, 2013 and were given a tour of the museum. Zelda Mixon*, their tour guide, told the history of the early pioneers, Peter Raulerson and Louisiana Chandler Raulerson, how they brought their

family from Basinger to this area in 1896 and built the first log cabin in

what is now the city of Okeechobee. The ladies were also given a tour of the old Tantie school house which was built in 1909. The ladies were quite interested in the old school

desks which brought back memories of their childhood sitting in desks

like those in the old school.Zelda Mixon is the great-grand-daughter of Peter and Louisiana

Raulerson who helped raise her and is a member of the Okeechobee

Historical Society.

In spite of daily rains and heavy winds, this week provided some

great fishing. Bass fish-ermen are finding bass scattered all over the lake. There are fish inside the grass line and there are fish on the outside of the grass line. Finding fish stacked up where you can catch large numbers however is a bit more difficult. There are a lot of shad using the outside grass lines as pro-tection from hungry fish. Lipless crank baits, swim baits, top water plugs and all sorts of plastics will draw strikes.

areas as well as along the outside edges. Crickets, red worms and grass shrimp are all working well. An-glers that are fond of catch-ing big blue gill on a fly rod can find large numbers of fish along the edges of the local canals.

Anglers that target catfish can find them along the edges of hydrilla lines and grass edges in the lake. Cut bait or worms will load your boat with all the chunky catfish you desire.

Okeechobee Main Street, in conjunction with a private donor, is planning the next mural project, which will show a representation of the old Park Street Drug Store during the 1920s.
