The Gathering

1st ChurchGrace, Mercy and Peace from God our Father be with you all

1 There is a green hill far away, without a city wall,

where the dear Lord was crucified, who died to save us all.

2 We may not know, we cannot tell, what pains he had to bear;but we believe it was for ushe hung and suffered there.

3 He died that we might be forgiv'n,he died to make us good,

that we might go at last to heav'n,saved by his precious blood.

4 There was no other good enough

to pay the price of sin;he only could unlock the gate

of heav'n, and let us in.

5 O dearly, dearly has he loved, and we must love him too,

and trust in his redeeming blood, and try his works to do.

Welcome

Welcome address on the aim and order of events today

CollectAlmighty Father, look with mercy on this your familyfor which our Lord Jesus Christ was content to be betrayed and given up into the hands of sinners and to suffer death upon the cross;who is alive and glorified with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

The Word of God

Station One - Jesus is condemned to death - Jesus Before PilateVery early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So, they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. “Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate. “You have said so,” Jesus replied.

The chief priests accused him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.” But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed. Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did. “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked

Pilate, knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead. “What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them. “Crucify him!” they shouted. “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

Mark 15 :1-15 (NIV)

All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you …………

Please could we leave the church in silence and go the Church Gate

Station Two - Jesus takes up the Cross When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!

John 19:5 (NIV)Jesus is sentenced to be Crucified. Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they slapped him in the face.

John 19: 13-17 (NIV)

All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you…….

Station Three - Jesus falls for the first timeSurely, he took up our pain

and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God,

stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions,

he was crushed for our iniquities;the punishment that brought us peace was on him,

and by his wounds we are healed. We all, like sheep, have gone astray,

each of us has turned to our own way;and the Lord has laid on him

the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed and afflicted,yet he did not open his mouth;

he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,

so he did not open his mouth.Isaiah 53:4-7 (NIV)

All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you…….

Station Four - Jesus meets his Mother MaryWhen Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, “Woman, here is your son,” and to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

John 19:26-27 (NIV)

“Is it nothing to you, all you who pass by?Look around and see.

Is any suffering like my sufferingthat was inflicted on me,

that the Lord brought on mein the day of his fierce anger?

Lamentations 1:12 (NIV)All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you.

Station Five - Simon of Cyrene helps with His CrossA certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross.

Mark 15: 21 (NIV)Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.

(Mark 8:34 (NIV)All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you…….

Station Six - Veronica wipes the face of Jesus“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

Matthew 25:40 (NIV)Mark Twain recalls :

“We crossed a street, and came presently to the former residence of St. Veronica. When the Saviour passed there, she came out, full of womanly compassion, and spoke pitying words to him, undaunted by the hooting and the threatening of the mob, and wiped the perspiration from his face with her handkerchief.

We had heard so much of St. Veronica, and seen her picture by so many masters, that it was like meeting an old friend unexpectedly to come upon her ancient home in Jerusalem. The strangest thing about the incident that has made her name so famous, is, that when she wiped the perspiration away, the print of the Saviour’s face remained upon the handkerchief, a perfect portrait, and so remains unto this day.”

(Mark Twain 1869 Innocents Abroad)

All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you…….

Station Seven - Jesus falls the second time

My back is filled with searing pain;there is no health in my body.

I am feeble and utterly crushed;I groan in anguish of heart.

All my longings lie open before you, Lord;my sighing is not hidden from you.

My heart pounds, my strength fails me;even the light has gone from my eyes.

My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;my neighbours stay far away.

Psalm 38: 6-22 (NIV)

All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you…….

Station Eight - Jesus consoles the women of JerusalemA large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ Then “‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!” and to the hills, “Cover us!”’(Hosea 10:8) For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”

Luke 23: 27-31 (NIV)

All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you…….

Station Nine - Jesus falls the third time“Exhausted at the foot of Calvary, Jesus falls for the third time to the ground. This last fall is devastating. Jesus can barely proceed to the end. His executioners help him up so he can make it up the hill of crucifixion. Help us, dear Lord, to pick ourselves up each time we fall. Conscious of our weaknesses, may we stretch a helping hand to all who share our human frailty”

http://www.bspenance.org/wayofthecross/station9.html

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Hebrews 4: 15-16(NIV)

All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you…….

Station Ten - Jesus is stripped of his garments When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, “They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.” (Psalm 22:18)This is what the soldiers did.

John 19: 23-24(NIV)

All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you…….

Station Eleven - Jesus is nailed to the CrossWhen they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots. The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.” The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.” There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the Jews. One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. ” Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

On which the Prince of glory died,My richest gain I count but loss,

And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,Save in the death of Christ my God!

All the vain things that charm me most,I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,Sorrow and love flow mingled down!Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

Were the whole realm of nature mine,That were a present far too small;

Love so amazing, so divine,Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Short SilenceStation Twelve - Jesus dies on the Cross Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

And about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, Lema Sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he breathed his last.

At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”

Matthew 27:50-54 (NIV)

All - Dear Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, we thank you …… we thank you…….

Short SilenceThe Death of JesusNow it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jewish leaders did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”

John 19:28-37 (NIV)

Short Silence

Station Thirteen - Jesus is taken down from the CrossMy God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Why are you so far from saving me,so far from my cries of anguish?

My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer,by night, but I find no rest.

Psalm 22 - A psalm of David. The Burial of Jesus Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a

mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.

John 19:38-40 (NIV)

Short Silence

Station Fourteen - Jesus is laid in the TombAs evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb. Also see Mark 15: 46-47
