Five Major Factors Predict Probability of College Completion
OAS: “New School” Standards
Focus more on reading texts for the purpose of gathering information.
Standards are like a staircase moving students to higher skills and knowledge from PreK–12.
Students improve writing skills as part of learning in all subject areas.
Students slow down and think deeply to spark their own ideas.
Students learn to apply what they learn in solving problems. Standards focus on what will be expected of graduates in
the real-world.
With only a few colors, I don’t think we can complete this project.
Truth. We’re limited in our individual expertise.
If only there was some way to…
INTEGRATE
Yes. Working together would lead to exactly the results we need…
Career Skills and Academics.
① OAS is the vehicle for improving student outcomes.
Grades PreK-12 Emphasize disciplinary
literacy Focus on expository
text, critical reading, and use of technology
Recognize the importance of text difficulty and complexity
② College-, Career-, and Citizen-Readiness is our destination.
Prepare students for the rapidly-changing world of the 21st century
Focus on relevant learning goals
Route easier to follow with fewer, higher, and clearer concepts
③ Educators are in the classroom driver’s seat.
Teachers take control of the wheel and navigate the “how” of instruction
Standards provide the map for skill and concept attainment
Students “test drive” applying skills across subject areas
⑤ OAS gets students’ wheels turning.
Supported processing of complex text and problem-solving
Make learning visible by modeling of skill and strategy use
Make thinking concrete with time for accountable classroom talk
Deepen comprehension through written extension in all disciplines
⑥ The time to accelerate efforts is now.
The 21st century workforce requires that students… integrate reading, writing,
thinking, speaking, and listening skills at high levels.
use mathematical concepts in novel situations
apply digital literacy in diverse settings
demonstrate proficiency with integrated tasks on the assessments at regular intervals
⑦ Assessment stops ensure students achieve peak performance.
“Telling is not Teaching”: Increase authentic tasks and scaffolding with teacher and peer support
Differentiate instruction according to individual student needs
Use data to drive teacher planning and instruction
Be tenacious in efforts to introduce parents to strategies for home support
I am prepared to teach to the new standards and I don't need any of these things
New summative assessments that measure how well students are learning the standards
New curricula and learning tools aligned to the new standards in English and Math
New formative assessments that measure how well students are learning the standards
Professional development on how to teach parts of the standards that are new to me
Professional development focused on the requirements of the standards
Student-centered technology and resources to help students best learn to these new standards

Resources Needed to Implement Common Core Standards:Question: What types of resources do you think you will need
in order to effectively implement the common core standards in your classroom(s)?
Which of these standards are already in your programs?
Which ones do you need to add to your
instruction?
Literacy and Numeracy Standards
How will you do it?
What is unique about this task?
How is it similar or different from tasks in
your classrooms?
