Scouting the Cowboys... Oklahoma State has won 10 in a row following a non-con-ference win over Oral Roberts and a series sweep at Kansas State. Overall, the Cow-boys are 39-13 with a 16-5 Big 12 record and have reached as high as No. 6 in the USA To-day/ESPN Coaches’ Poll. Catcher/left fielder Gage Green leads OSU with a .330 batting average and 15 stolen bases. Designated hitter Zach Fish has slugged a team-high 10 home runs and driven in 38 runs to go with a .323 batting average. Right-hander Jon Per-rin (6-3) will get the start on Thursday. He holds a 1.76 ERA and has struck out 68 over 77.1 innings.

All-Time vs. OSU... Oklahoma holds a nar-row edge over Oklahoma State in the all-time series, 138-131. The Cowboys have won seven of the last 11 match-ups in the series. The last time the Sooners won back-to-back games over OSU was in 2010-11.

Bedlam Personified... Ten minutes past minute, Kolbey Carpenter ripped a double to left that scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 18th as Oklahoma pulled away for a 12-9 win over No. 13 Oklahoma State on the road Tuesday night. The win was the lon-gest game in OU history and first in Stillwater since 1992. RHP Kindle Ladd (3-1) pitched brilliantly in relief; scattering two hits and two walks, while striking out four over six in-nings of shutout relief. In the 18th, Austin O’Brien drew a one-out walk to start the rally and scored the game-winning run.

Shave for the Brave... On April 3, Oklaho-ma held its “Shave for the Brave” event to join the fight against childhood cancer. The Sooners, with a goal of $20,000, raised over $29,000 through the Vs. Cancer Foundation to raise money for cancer research. Half of the money donated will be dedicated to the OU Children’s Hospital. The event also served as an opportunity for the Sooners in their countdown to 19 Ways.

Putting the Ball in Play... The Sooners strike out at the lowest rate in the Big 12 at 4.73 per game; ahead of TCU at 4.92. Mac James has struck out just 10 times and ranks 17th in the nation in “Toughest to Strikeout” at 19.3 at-bats per strikeout. Senior shortstop Hector Lorenzana ranks second on the team at 10.5.

Not-So-Newcomer... Neuse claimed his second Big 12 Newcomer of the Week award on April 7. He shared the honor with K-State’s Tanner DeVinny. Neuse hit .389 (7-for-18) with nine RBI, including two three-run home runs. He slugged .833, stole two bases and pitched one scoreless inning. Neuse’s eight RBI in game two of the weekend marked the most RBI in a game for a Sooner since Chris Ebright had nine vs. Oklahoma City (3/28/87).

Up Next... The Sooners have clinched a spot in the Phillips 66 Big 12 Cham-pionship in OKC next weekend. Okla-homa is three games up with three to play on Kansas State and won the se-ries with the Wildcats in Norman back in March.

Big 12 Tournament... The 2014 Phil-lips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship will be held at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, May 21-25.

Back-To-Back Jacks... Last Satur-day, James and Haley hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first to give OU and early 3-0 lead. It marked the second set of back-to-back home runs for the Sooners on the season. Neuse and Anthony Hermelyn previously did so against Seton Hall (2/15/14).

#YardWork... Oklahoma has hit 28 home runs in 52 games, including 22 in the friendly confines of L. Dale Mitchell Park. Haley and Neuse have hit a team-high six, while James has added five. Each home run hit this sea-son by Haley has come in home games.

Big 12 Openers... The Sooners are 8-9 in the first Big 12 match-up of the season after an 11-4 win over K-State (3/21). OU has won four of its last five conference openers. Oklahoma won its first Big 12 game in the league opener vs. Kansas on March 15, 1997.

Playing ‘em Close... Oklahoma is 6-2 in one-run games this season. The Sooners lost their first one-run game of the year in a walk-off at Kansas (3/30/14). Three of Oklahoma’s one-run wins have come in extra innings. In two-run games, OU is 5-6.

Pack The Dale... Oklahoma set a se-ries record in attendance vs. Texas (4/11-13) with a three-game total of 7,269. The previous high was 6,689 against Texas in 2004. On April 12, the Sooners hosted the second largest crowd in program history with 4,102 in attendance. Oklahoma has had four-figure attendance figures in 11 home games and are averaging 1,122 per game.

Getting the Call... Right-handed pitcher Chase Anderson received his Major League call-up from Double-A with the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 6. He made his debut in a 5.1-in-ning start against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday and picked up the win as he allowed just one run on two hits, while striking out six.

MLB Transactions... Former Sooner Jason Bartlett retired on April 18 after a three-game stint with the Minnesota Twins marked his 10th season in Ma-jor League Baseball. Bartlett was out of baseball in 2013 and last played in the majors in 2012 for the San Diego Padres, before making the Twins out of spring training. Greg Dobbs was designated for assignment by the Mi-ami Marlins in April 29. He was just 1-for-13 in 15 games played this sea-son. Right-hander Daniel McCutchen was recalled by the Texas Rangers on April 7, but was designated for assign-ment on April 14.

Triple Nation... Oklahoma ranks sev-enth in the country and first in the Big 12 with 21 triples. Three players are among the top 60 in the nation, in-cluding Neuse (2nd, 7), Haley (11th, 6) and Aikin (58th, 4).

MAC ATTACK... James was named the Big 12 Player of the Week, on March 10, after hitting .684 (13-for-19) in five games. He slugged 1.000 and held a .714 on-base percentage. James finished the weekend with a 4-for-4 day, his second of the season, to go with his second home run of the season. James was also honored as the Louisville Slugger and NCBWA National Player of the Week.

Grand Finale... Fans were treated to some early fireworks during a March 21 win over K-State as Haley drilled a fifth-inning home run over the wall in right. The home run was the fifth of the season for Haley as well as his first career grand slam. It was the first grand slam by a Sooner since Ricky Eisenberg against Kansas on May 8, 2011. The next day, James went deep to left for the second OU grand slam of the weekend. James’ home run was his third of the season.

Making Some Noise... Freshman third baseman Sheldon Neuse was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week on March 17, after batting .529 (9-for-17) in four games. He slugged 1.000 with a .600 OBP. Neuse went 4-for-4 with two doubles against UTA at Globe Life Ballpark in Arlington on Tuesday. He tripled twice vs. Belmont (3/15) and scored three times.

Winning Streaks... After an opening day loss to Seton Hall, the Sooners rattled off five consecutive wins for their first five-game win streak of the season. OU last won five or more in a row when it won eight, beginning with the 2013 regular season finale at Kan-sas State and finishing with a win in the NCAA Blacksburg Regional Final against Virginia Tech. Oklahoma had its second five-game win streak of the season snapped against Arkansas-Little Rock (3/19).

Crooked Numbers... On the score-board, Oklahoma has put up two or more runs in an inning 68 times and three or more 34 times. The Sooners scored a season-high 10 runs in the seventh in-ning in game one of a doubleheader vs. CSU Bakersfield (4/5/14), high-lighted by three-run homers by Neuse and Austin O’Brien.

Lineup on Shuffle... Oklahoma did not repeat a lineup until the 14th game of the season. The Sooners have used 33 different starting lineups. Center fielder Craig Aikin was the only player to start each of the first 27 games at the same position.

Mac of All Trades... Against Abilene Christian (3/5), James made his first career start at first base. He has now started at four different positions this season; including catcher, left field and designated hitter. James made his debut at third base late in the game against Texas (4/13).

Out of the Bullpen... Sophomore right-hander Ralph Garza Jr. has made the trip from the bullpen to the mound a familiar one. He is 18th in the nation in appearances at 29 this season, including two starts. As a reliever, Garza is 5-1 with a 3.50 ERA.

Return of the Mac... James, a transfer from Brookhaven College, appeared in just nine games, earning nine at-bats and two hits in his first season in Norman. This season, he has started games at catcher, designated hitter, left field and first base.

Opening the Gates... Oklahoma’s season-opening series against Seton Hall was the second highest opening weekend attendance total in program history as 3,754 fans passed through the gates. The previous record was set in 2011 when 4,117 saw the Sooners face William & Mary, the season after reaching the 2010 College World Series. The single-game attendance record on opening day was set after the 1994 CWS National Championship team returned home to face Missouri South-ern in front of a crowd of 2,183 in 1995.

Dialing it Up... Freshman RHP Alec Hansen has made just one start and nine total appear-ances, spanning 11 innings. However, he has the ability to touch triple digits on the radar gun and has his fastball consistently in the 95-97 range.

Who’s on First?... The Sooners have started five different first basemen. Freshman Niko Buentello made his debut anchoring first on opening day before seeing action at the DH spot in the next two games. He leads the team with seven starts at first. Sophomore catcher Anthony Hermelyn has started 15 games there, while James and junior Keach Ballard have each started at first. Freshman Austin O’Brien made his first career start at first vs. CSU Bakersfield (4/5). Sophomore Kolbey Car-penter became the sixth Sooner to start at first when he did so against Texas (4/12). It was his first start at first since facing Dallas Bap-tist (4/30/13).

More Runs=More Wins... In each of Okla-homa’s first seven wins, the Sooners scored at least eight runs. They are 13-1 when scor-ing eight or more, including a season-high 17 against CSU Bakersfield (4/5). The only loss with eight or more came vs. Texas (4/11). When scoring five runs or less, OU is 9-23.

Defending Big 12 Champs... The Sooners are fresh off a 43-21 campaign in 2013 as they claimed the program’s first Big 12 Tournament Championship since 1997. Overall, Oklahoma returns 17 letterwinners, including five posi-tion starters. Senior second baseman Hector Lorenzana is back after hitting .274 with 42 RBI and 33 runs in his first season in Norman.

New Man on the Top Step... Hughes was named the ninth head coach in program his-tory on June 27, 2013. He comes to Norman with 17 years of NCAA head coaching expe-rience, most recently at Virginia Tech from 2007-13. Overall, Hughes owns a career record of 526-386-2. He coached the Hokies to two NCAA Regionals in 2010 and 2013, which they hosted in Blacksburg. Hughes previous coach-ing stops were at Boston College (1999-06) and Trinity (1997-98).

Season Openers... Since 1962, Oklahoma is 35-18 on opening day and 23-2 when playing the first game of the season at home, including 22-1 at L. Dale Mitchell Park. All-time in home openers, the Sooners are 48-5 going back to 1962, including 32-1 at L. Dale Mitchell.

Opening Day Starter... Sophomore lefty Jacob Evans made his first career start on opening day, marking the first time a Sooner pitcher made his first career start on opening day since Zach Neal in 2010. Evans is also the third straight lefty to start on opening day, fol-lowing Dillon Overton in 2012 and 2013.

Double Switch... Senior Hector Lorenzana had started all 75 of his career games at sec-ond base before the Abilene Christian series. Beginning with the 10th game of the season,

WEEK 14 • #Big12BSB

CONFERENCE NOTES• The Big 12 regular season title will be determined this weekend with Oklahoma State and TCU vying for the league crown. OSU holds a one-game lead over the Horned Frogs and will face Oklahoma in the annual neutral-site Bedlam series. TCU travels to Waco. Should the two teams share the title, the Pokes hold the tiebreaker over TCU and would be the No. 1 seed in next week’s Championship.

• Oklahoma State has never won the Big 12’s regular season title and are one-time winners of the postseason crown - 2006. The Cowboys enter the week with a nine-game winning streak, while TCU has won 21 of its last 23. Additionally, OSU has won six consecutive Big 12 series for just the third time since the Big 12 began play in 1996, joining the 2006 and 2008 Cowboys in achieving that feat.

• KU closed out Big 12 play last weekend with its third straight Big 12 series sweep. It was the first time since Baylor in 2012 that a team has swept three consecutive conference series. The Jayhawks, picked to finish last in the coaches’ preseason poll, conclude league play at 15-9. The .625 winning percentage is their best Big 12 mark all-time.

• For the first time since May 5, 2009, Kansas is ranked in the nation’s top 25, sitting at No. 22 in the Baseball America national poll. KU becomes the sixth Big 12 team to appear in the rankings this year, and is the highest national ranking for the squad since March 2003 when it was ranked No. 20. OSU is ranked as high as No. 6 this week, while TCU checks in as high as No. 13, Texas at No. 19 and Texas Tech at No. 23.

• Based on the most recent NCAA RPI rankings, the Big 12 has six teams in the top 40 (67 percent) - 10. TCU, 13. Texas, 16. Texas Tech, 24. West Virginia, 27. Oklahoma State and 36. Kansas.

• WVU’s Billy Fleming became the second league player to hit for the cycle this season. Fleming recorded the feat last Sunday in Lawrence and is the 16th player to hit for the cycle in league history. K-State’s Ross Kivett also had a cycle this season, marking this the fifth time multiple players have hit for the cycle in the same season in Big 12 history.

• Big 12 Player of the Week Zach Fish hit the century mark for career RBI last week. Fish joins three other active players with 100 or more RBI in their careers.

• TCU’s Brandon Finnegan is the lone Big 12 player named to the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award 30-man Midseason Watch List. He leads the league in wins and strikeouts.

• The 2014 Phillips 66 Big 12 Baseball Championship returns to Oklahoma City’s Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark next week, May 21-25.
