The decoration of this hilt is almost certainly by the same handas a sword sold in these rooms, 12th December 2007, lot 285.The use of cherub masks with feathered crowns is particularlyunusual. Both are related to a rapier in the Wallace Collection, inv. no. A596. The Wallace rapier originated from WilliamMeyrick and was described in the 1861 catalogue as hilt andpommel....stated to have been recently dug up at SaffronWalden;....A suitable blade...has been added.... The quality ofboth the decoration and the hilt itself would suggest that bothoriginate from a Royal London workshop, such as that ofNathaniel Matthewe (recorded 1584-1641). Matthewe ismentioned in the Great Wardrobe accounts in the early 17thCentury where it appears that he was required to supplyswords for specific occasions such as for the enrolment of aKnight of the Bath and the installation of a Garter Knight. On28th September 1614 he is recorded supplying ....a huntingweapon with a knife....set with cherubs heads of silver, thewhole damascened with gold embossed and chased, the gripof large silver wire gilded......
