added to the list please let me know.
These projects are in addition to any
sudden repairs that crop up. We have
in the last month alone had to repair
the flat roof above the changing
rooms, replace tiles on the main Hall
roof and institute repairs to the old
squash court roof to say nothing of
replacing the lead flashing!
But to get anything done (and these
are only the small ones) we need to
continue to generate revenue. Our
bar turnover is plateauing and we
still need to reduce our costs overall
but most importantly we require
inspired Members to put on functions
such as last weekend’s Gutsfest.
Massive thanks are due to all those
involved in putting this on, especially
main organiser-in-chief Paul Riches.
It may be controversial at times but
without it we would be unable to do
as much as we would wish.
Elsewhere in this issue there is first
warning of next year’s Annual Dinner
which will be held at the School. I
would urge anybody who fancys a
trip down memory lane (or even for
those who didn’t benefit from a
Rutlish education but want to find
out what they missed !!!) to get their
booking in early. From what I hear
this particular year will be
completely different – eat your heart
out Simpsons!
We are now approaching the build up to the Christmas period so I sincerely
hope that you will continue to
support us in what we try to achieve.

As the Old Rutlishian year fast
approaches its end, the Treasurer is
beginning to put together his figures
to see how much we have spent and
to see what we are likely to be able
to spend next year. Projects we
would like to continue and even
embark on include the following.
Continuing to update and
renovate the BBQ area
Continue to update and
redecorate the lobby area
including the installation and
introduction of an electronic
welcome screen.
Site an “advice sign” for leavers
asking for respect for our
neighbours.
Start a planned maintenance
scheme for the Clubhouse
Continue improvements to the
grounds under our new
Groundskeeper.
Finally install the Hall curtains.
Investigate new lighting for the
Hall.
Look for ways of improving the
audio-visual capabilities in the
Hall so we can use the big screen
more effectively.
Look for further ways that we can
noise insulate the Hall.
Replace the entrance doors that
are proving ever more difficult to
secure.
Install cycle racks.
There will be many other things that
we might do to improve the offer
that we give our Members. If
anybody has something that can be

Hallowe’en Rutsfest Saturday 28 October 2017
Old Ruts are the RFU Kids First
Champion Club for October.
Old Ruts were named as English
Rugby’s first Champion Club ever for
the new Kids First initiative,
designed to get more children playing
rugby for longer.
Old Ruts won this accolade because
the RFU recognised the great work
the club has done in making sure kids
are put at the very heart of
everything we do.
Ruts’ Kids First rugby is all about fun,
learning new skills and making sure
everyone gets involved.
Rugby legends Ugo Monye and Dave
Flatman came down to meet the
minis and were hugely impressed by
the way we were upskilling our
coaches to make sure they all deliver
rugby the Kids First way.
With new initiatives like RugRuts for
our tiny players and a new girls tag
section the club is moving forward at
pace from the bottom upwards and
all the volunteers involved should be
very proud that the great work done
every Sunday has been recognised.

Seniors round up
3rd XV vs Kingston 2s (H)
Final Score – 52-29
Tries: Ryan Stroud, James Patience,
Callum Baines, Laurence Smith,
George Vaughan-Barratt, Henry
Thorpe, Reece Nye, Iain
Cons: Tom Sellar x 6
A first run out for the mighty 3's,
with a few rusty gentlemen getting
their first game time this season. It is
great to see some of the older boys
using their wit and experience
alongside the verve and energy of
the youngsters, a fine cocktail
indeed. Many thanks to Kingston for
providing a very credible opposition,
in what can only be described as a
feisty affair. It was all cuddles in the
tunnel and bar afterwards, though.
Sideshow got us some valuable points
on the board before the Saxons had
even touched the ball. A lovely tap
back and set up from our kick off and
Tom Sellar provides the defence
splitting pass - cometh the hour
cometh the man.
An attritional 15 minutes followed,
Kingston showing skill and and brute
force to get their big prop over the
line. A gift of a try, in all honesty -
some sloppy discipline from the Ruts
in our 22. Iain then put us ahead in
the corner, after some lovely phase
play. Callum, Laurence and George
put us further ahead before the
whistle, and a well deserved drinks
break to discuss proceedings.
The Ruts ran riot in the second half
in a very end-to-end affair, some
tired legs on both sides meant there
was plenty of space to run. Will
Ingham made a rare appearance in
the front row, a convert from backs
to forwards at the tender age of 23.
The biggest cheer of the match came
when the ball was put over the line
in the corner by the mercurial Ryan
Stroud. What he was doing on the
wing in the opposition 22 we will
never know. Reece and Henry closed
our account with some lovely tries.
A great advert for 3s rugby, well
played all and thank you Kingston.

Rugby 1st XV vs Worth Old Boys (H)
Final Score: 21 - 23
Tries: Dave Cecil (2), Jack Bricknell
Cons: Henry Pueble (3)
The unbeaten run is over! In a very close affair, our 1st XV unfortunately failed to overcome Worth Old Boys.
The Ruts started slowly rarely gaining possession of the ball and struggling to keep it - forcing the champagne rugby a bit too much. WOB came out the blocks firing and kept the Ruts try-less in the first half, another first for the season. 0-13.
A stern talking to at half time and the Ruts pulled their socks up to begin the fight back. Flanker Dave Cecil (usually a 9) played an outstanding game and bagged two meat-pies in quick succession that were converted with ease to take the Ruts back into the lead. 14-13.
Unfortunately ill discipline allowed WOB easy access into Ruts’ 22 which resulted in WOB crashing over from close range. 14-20.
Further ‘border-line’ defending from the Ruts allowed the WOB 10 to slot a very kickable penalty, meaning the Ruts needed more than a converted try to win. Jack Bricknell grabbed a try with 20 minutes to go to give the Ruts hope of another come-back. The boys pushed hard for the win and had a fair few tries disallowed for decisions some may call dubious but it wasn’t to be. 21-23.
Congratulations to Worth on a very solid game - they should be proud of their efforts defending for the last 10 minutes with 13 men. After a harsh wake-up call the Ruts will hope for an immediate turn around in a tough game against Met Police on Saturday 4 November at Poplar Road.
A mention must go out to entire Old Ruts seniors' section for fielding three teams for the first time in a while - a remarkable achievement by all involved.
Well done also to at least 15 Colts who played their first, of many, senior games.

Seniors
The 1st XI are in second place in
Intermediate Division 1, having won
five out of seven games so far.
However, they exited the League
Cup early and will be hoping to fare
better in the Surrey County Cup this
coming weekend.
The 2nd XI are fourth in Junior
Division 2, the 3rd XI and 4th XIs are
having a more mixed time and are
both in seventh place in their
respective divisions presently.
The Vets are looking stronger this
season, although this has not quite
been reflected in their results so far,
which has brought two wins, three
defeats and two draws.
