The Ascension of the Lord

June 2, 2019

This Sunday, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of the

Lord. We profess our faith in this glorious mystery when we state

in the Nicene Creed: “He ascended into Heaven and is seated at

the right hand of the Father.”

Christ’s Ascension into Heaven accomplishes four things:

1. Christ, the head of the Church, enters in to exalted glory.

2. Christ ascends into Heaven to send down upon us the Gift

of the Holy Spirit.

3. Christ ascends into Heaven to be our Intercessor before

the Father.

4. Christ ascends into Heaven to prepare a place for us.

The following words are of our Holy Father, Pope Francis,

“The Ascension does not point to Jesus’ absence, but tells us that

He is alive in our midst in a new way. He is no longer in a specific

place in the world as He was before the Ascension. He is now in

the lordship of God, present in every space and time, close to each

one of us. In our life we are never alone: we have this Advocate

who awaits us, who defends us. We are never alone: the Crucified

and Risen Lord guides us. We have with us a multitude of broth-

ers and sisters who, in silence and concealment, in their family life

and at work, in their problems and hardships, in their joys and

hopes, live faith daily and together with us bring the world the

lordship of God’s love, in the Risen Jesus Christ, ascended into

Heaven, our own Advocate who pleads for us.”

The power of the Ascension of Our Lord is tied to our virtue of

hope, which relates and unites us to Christ by a confident trust

that presents itself in our thoughts, words, and actions; and

also directs how we live. In our daily life, this will appear as a

reminder to correct ourselves when we start towards the wrong;

this will also manifest as an increased desire for prayer, an

increased desire to receive the Sacraments, and an increased

desire to make progress in the Christian life.

Matthew 25 Ministry

The Medical Missionaries of Mary wrote to thank us for our

donations to Casa Visitation in Honduras:

In January they wrote that our donation assisted a support

group for victims of domestic violence. They tell of

Esperanza and her family who were able to free

themselves from an abusive situation and now live

happily in safety.

In April they wrote that because of our support they are able

to help elderly people who are in the streets, alone and

abandoned. They tell of Abuela Olympia who is 96 years

old and destitute with no family to care for her. Because

of donations like ours, the sisters are able help her with

food, medicines and a listening ear.

How Can I Help:

• Donate needed items which may be left at the parish office;

• Become a member of the ministry (contact the parish office,

at (575) 835-2891); and

• Pray for the work of the ministry and those in need.

Needed items:

• Nonperishable food;

• Small pop-top cans of fruit;

• Bar soap;

• Personal Hygiene items;

• Insect repellant;

• Lip Balm;

• Diapers, size Newborn, 3, 4, 5, and 6;

• Baby wipes and Diaper rash ointment; and

• Baby blankets.
