Just some Organizational ideas for all the materials that I use
(my classroom is totally OCD)
• Keeping papers accessible for multiple preps• Grading – seating chart in a slip cover on clipboard• One folder per class (left-To Grade, right- Pass
Back)• Color the back of flashcards with different colors so
it’s easier to find the correct envelope• Partnering with paint samples– Pairs (2 of the same) – Groups of 3 or 4 (the shades of a color)
![Page 5: OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL: Stepping Away From the Textbook Marie Miarka 9 th year at Flushing High School/Flushing Middle School French Marie.Miarka@flushingschools.org](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e2e5503460f94b1decb/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
STUDENT BINDER - Organization
COLOR CODED WORKSHEETS (As often as I can. Let’s be honest
here. )
• Vocab – yellow• Grammar – pink• Writing – orange• Culture readings – blue/purple• Homework/activities - white
![Page 6: OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL: Stepping Away From the Textbook Marie Miarka 9 th year at Flushing High School/Flushing Middle School French Marie.Miarka@flushingschools.org](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e2e5503460f94b1decb/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
OLD SCHOOL (no technology
needed)
![Page 7: OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL: Stepping Away From the Textbook Marie Miarka 9 th year at Flushing High School/Flushing Middle School French Marie.Miarka@flushingschools.org](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e2e5503460f94b1decb/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
POUBELLE – Trash Can Review Game• Move desks out of the way• Garbage can in the middle of the room• Class stands in a circle around it• Students get a stack of scrap paper• Teacher calls a question/conjugation• Students write their answer on paper
– If correct – Students get 1 point automatically– If correct- students crumble up paper and shoot for a
basket. If they make it, they get 1 more point– If incorrect- students can throw on the ground
• Students are responsible for keeping their score
I use a whiteboard or screen to project the correct answer
![Page 8: OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL: Stepping Away From the Textbook Marie Miarka 9 th year at Flushing High School/Flushing Middle School French Marie.Miarka@flushingschools.org](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e2e5503460f94b1decb/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
THROWING FOOD/TRADING FOOD
• When learning food or partitives, I use plastic food.
• Throw one piece to a kid and say vocab and the class would repeat.
• Hold up 2 pieces and asked a student “Do you want this or that?” Then threw it to the student.
• Once students have 2 or more pieces, they walk around the class and ask each other “do you want this or that?” and they take each other's food items
![Page 9: OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL: Stepping Away From the Textbook Marie Miarka 9 th year at Flushing High School/Flushing Middle School French Marie.Miarka@flushingschools.org](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e2e5503460f94b1decb/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
FLASH CARDS OF PEOPLE• Pass out- walk around and describe (or in
partners)• What is he/she wearing?• What activities would he/she do?• 2 cards per person – Compare/Contrast• Tape up around the room and number
with Post It notes. Walk around, write a sentence
Can also be used with a whiteboard to write sentences and share
![Page 10: OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL: Stepping Away From the Textbook Marie Miarka 9 th year at Flushing High School/Flushing Middle School French Marie.Miarka@flushingschools.org](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e2e5503460f94b1decb/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
SENTENCE STRIPS- to check worksheets
• Write an entire answer on cardstock(one word per strip) and cut them up– Each sentence is a different color marker
• Pass out all strips to students• Call up one color at a time(or a translation)• Students put sentence together in front of room
(I have also done this with smaller strips in ziplock bags and had students pass them around in groups) – this is a great way to check a worksheet
![Page 11: OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL: Stepping Away From the Textbook Marie Miarka 9 th year at Flushing High School/Flushing Middle School French Marie.Miarka@flushingschools.org](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e2e5503460f94b1decb/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
BALLOON POP• Thanks to Darcy Ebert at Dewitt HS• Put vocab words in the balloons• Can put pictures in and call in
language • Just a quick listening
for vocab
![Page 12: OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL: Stepping Away From the Textbook Marie Miarka 9 th year at Flushing High School/Flushing Middle School French Marie.Miarka@flushingschools.org](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e2e5503460f94b1decb/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
WHITE BOARDS• Finish the sentence….. – Great for upper level writing and speaking– Then share with a partner
• Draw this vocabulary word• Give a category and list all the words you know• Divide the board into four squares– Describe the scenes and students draw what they
hear(great for 4 seasons/4 meals/4 people-clothing & adjectives)
• Quick check for a worksheet• Give 1 worksheet number per white board, have
student write answer on it, they present to class• Great way to correct mistakes together
![Page 13: OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL: Stepping Away From the Textbook Marie Miarka 9 th year at Flushing High School/Flushing Middle School French Marie.Miarka@flushingschools.org](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e2e5503460f94b1decb/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)

NUMBER SQUARES- Call me, Maybe?• Give out an envelope with pieces of paper
with 0-9 on it to each student • Tell them a French phone number to put
together– “Who was able to call me?”
• Same thing with telling them prices– “Who was able to correctly purchase the item?”
• Then they do this with a partner, going back and forth with a folder up between them for speaking practice
![Page 15: OLD SCHOOL MEETS NEW SCHOOL: Stepping Away From the Textbook Marie Miarka 9 th year at Flushing High School/Flushing Middle School French Marie.Miarka@flushingschools.org](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062516/56649e2e5503460f94b1decb/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
QUESTION WORDS- WALK AROUND Q&A survey
• Each student gets an index card• Write a yes/no question on it– Ask 5 students
• Change the question word (I shout one out)– Write it on the card– Ask 5 more students
• And so on…
• Follow up: Writing - Using their index card and own questions, answer all questions on the back of their index card and turn it in.
