INTRODUCTION

The name “Joshua” in the OT means the same as “Jesus” in the NT – “the Lord is salvation”

Both Joshua and Jesus lead the people into the promised land into rest – one temporal, the other eternal. One perfect, the other fallible. Heb 3:5-4:13 brings out a comparison: Emphasizing true rest as the rest God anticipates with

his people forever Reminding us that the word of God searches our heart

to show whether we are truly believers in Jesus Christ or not (Heb. 4:11-13)

JOSHUA AND JESUS – A COMPARISONLED BY THE WORD

Jesus (Son of Nun) Jesus (Son of Mary)

Ch 1 The Israelites that came out of Egypt did not enter into (rest) the land of promise because of unbelief (Heb. 3:12-19).

Those who do not believe in Christ, will not enter into the rest that God has promised Christ as their savior (Heb 4:1-3).

Joshua did not always mediate and do according to God’s Word.

Jesus was a meditator on God’s word.

Jesus, son of Nun, challenged the Israelites to remember God’s word to Moses, meditate on it continually, and promised God would give the rest that he had promised. (Josh. 1:10-18).

Jesus said: “Take my yoke upon you and learn of me, for I am meek and lowly in heart and you shall find rest to your souls, for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matt. 11:28-30).

JOSHUA AND JESUS – A COMPARISONCOMPLETE FAITH

Jesus son of Nun Jesus son of Mary

Ch 2 Reaching out to save the lost – Rahab and her family were the only ones saved in Jericho

. “We are a sweet savor of Christ God, in them that are saved and in them that perish, to the one a savor from death to death; to the other a savor from life unto life” (2 Cor 2:15, 16).

Ch 3 When Jesus, the son of Nun challenged the people to sanctify themselves, putting themselves wholly into the hands of God, who would make their way into and across the Jordan River.

Similarly, Jesus taught his disciples to trust in him alone. Peter, on the Sea of Galilee, desired to walk to Jesus. He began to sink. Jesus rebuked him for his “little faith,” which means a faith focused on one’s self instead of on Jesus (Mat. 14:31).

JOSHUA AND JESUS – A COMPARISONGIVING GOD THE GLORY

Jesus (Son of Nun) Jesus (Son of Mary)

Ch 4 Twelve men who took a stone out of the middle of the dried Jordan, where they crossed. They were to place the stones, one for each tribe, to carry the story to later generations and give God glory.

“The word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14).

JOSHUA AND JESUS – A COMPARISONOBSERVING THE SACRAMENTS

Jesus (Son of Nun) Jesus (Son of Mary)

Ch 5 While the enemies of Israel trembled in fear, God reminded the people that their hearts had been cleansed by means of God’s circumcising their heart. He required that every male among them, be circumcised in the skin before they entered the promised land of Canaan.

Jesus told Nicodemus that all the saved would have to be born again (Deut. 30:6; John 3).Jesus, the son of Mary, was circumcised eight days after his birth (Luke 2:21) to show that he would take our sin on himself to pay for our sins (2 Cor. 5:21).

And further, he had them to observe the Passover.

Jesus, son of Mary, observed Passover and turned the last Passover into the Lord’s Supper, celebrating his own death on behalf of all believers (Luke 22:14-23). To remind them that they were now to enter the land of Canaan and live off of its

fruits, the manna ceased and would come no more. Jesus, son of Nun sees a vision of the second Jesus to remind him that the ground about to be taken did not belong to him or Israel but to God.

Page 9: Old Testament Walkthru - Joshua, Judges (Studies 16,17)

JOSHUA AND JESUS – A COMPARISONNO TOLERANCE TO SIN

Jesus (Son of Nun) Jesus (Son of Mary)

Ch 6 It was by faith in the Lord that the walls fell down and not by anything that Israel did (Heb. 11:30). The only citizens of Jericho who remained alive were the family of the harlot, Rahab (Heb 11:31).

God will simply destroy all the rest in the world so that only those that have believed in him in the world will be saved in that day (Revelation 16: 12-21 and18:1-19:21).

Achan of the tribe of Judah retains some spoils from Jericho which was to go to the Lord. He and his family were stoned to death.

In Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira, were struck down. Sin not dealt with in the church hurts the whole church and dishonors the name of the Lord .

JOSHUA AND JESUS – A COMPARISONONLY GOD’S WAY TRIUMPHS

Jesus (Son of Nun) Jesus (Son of Mary)

ch8 When Jesus the son of Nun and the Israelites learned the hard way that we please God by following God’s word and not man’s way, they triumphed over Ai, with all the glory given to God (8:8).

Moreover, before Jesus, son of Mary (John 5:45, 46) ascended to heaven, he showed us that all that is to be found in Scripture is, ultimately, about him, the Savior (Luke 24:44-49).

The people of Gibeon, deceived the Israelites telling them that they were from far off. Jesus, son of Nun, without looking to God made peace with them Even they learned the truth, let them live as slaves. This brought much sorrow to Israel for 400 years. (Jud. 17:6; 21:25).

Jesus, when faced with his Father’s enemies and his own death, did not compromise, in order to escape crucifixion but went to the Father, in the Garden of Gethsemane, and prayed for His guidance (Matt. 26:36-46); for God’s blessings on those he came to save (John 17).

JOSHUA AND JESUS – A COMPARISONSPIRITUAL WARFARE

Jesus (Son of Nun) Jesus (Son of Mary)

Ch 10-12

Warfare in Canaan was first launched by the people of God (10:6-15). Jesus, son of Nun, called on the Lord to fight with them. Even the sun and the moon were used (10:12-14). This time there was no compromise with the enemies of God and God’s people. They followed the enemies until they had wiped them out (10:16-28).

When Jesus, rose from the dead, he sent out his believers to the ends of the earth to conquer not countries but individuals throughout the world(Matt. 28 and Acts 1) using all power in heaven and earth. The weapons of the warfare - Ephesians 6:10-20. Jesus will finally return for his church and destroy their enemy, Satan (Rev. 19:11-21).

Page 12: Old Testament Walkthru - Joshua, Judges (Studies 16,17)

JOSHUA AND JESUS – A COMPARISONDIVIDING THE INHERITANCE

Jesus (Son of Nun) Jesus (Son of Mary)

Ch 20

By now, Jesus, son of Nun, was old and the Lord told him to divide the remaining land among those tribes that had not possessed their inheritance. The Levites were not to receive any inheritance.

In Hebrews 9:15, the writer says, “He is the mediator of a new covenant, that a death having taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, they that have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.”

Ch 23

The Lord had called Jesus, son of Nun, to be the planter of God’s people in Canaan. So, when he was old and near death he was ready to turn the church over to those he had trained.

Jesus, the son of Mary, led his disciples through God’s word, book by book. He charged them to await the coming of the Holy Spirit to teach them God’s word and to empower them to be his witnesses (Compare, also, Hebrews 3 and 4).

Ch 24

Jesus, the son of Nun, gathered the people of Israel together and delivered a farewell message to them in which he reminded them that their ancestors served other gods until the Lord called out Abraham and led him to Canaan.

Jesus, the son of Mary, when he was ready to depart, after his resurrection, promised to put His Spirit in them, after he left, to enable them to continue forever to be witnesses to the world of Jesus Christ, the Savior of those that believe in him.

ISRAEL’S DOWNFALL

Page 20: Old Testament Walkthru - Joshua, Judges (Studies 16,17)

FAILURE TO PASS ON/RECEIVE GOD’S WORDGod’s command through: Abraham (Gen. 18:19)  For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his

children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”

Moses (Deut. 6:4-9) These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

Paul(Eph. 6:4).  Fathers,do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Jesus charged the parents and his disciples, to bring the little children to him (Luke 18:15-17).

Page 21: Old Testament Walkthru - Joshua, Judges (Studies 16,17)

FAILURE TO PASS ON/RECEIVE GOD’S WORD 6 ”After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take

possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. 7 The people served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the LORD had done for Israel.

8 Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten. 9 And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Heres[b] in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

10 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the LORD nor what he had done for Israel” Judges 2.

Page 22: Old Testament Walkthru - Joshua, Judges (Studies 16,17)

FAILURE TO PASS ON/RECEIVE GOD’S WORD

Results in:God turning away from them and becoming not a helper but an enemy (2:11-15). Loving the world and the things in the world (1 John 2:14-17).

Page 23: Old Testament Walkthru - Joshua, Judges (Studies 16,17)

FOOLISHNESS TO COVENANT WITH “TROJAN HORSES”Joshua’s mistake of allowing the Gibeonites to stay as captives created a ripple effect as other tribes followed suit. The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to Bokim and said, “I brought you up out of Egypt and led you into the land I swore to give to your ancestors. I said, ‘I will never break my covenant with you,2 and you shall not make a covenant with the people of this land, but you shall break down their altars.’ Yet you have disobeyed me. Why have you done this? 3 And I have also said, ‘I will not drive them out before you; they will become traps for you, and their gods will become snares to you.’” – judges 2:1-4From Revelation 2 and 3, we learn of churches of Asia Minor that compromised with sinners in their churches, to their own harm.

Page 24: Old Testament Walkthru - Joshua, Judges (Studies 16,17)

COVENANT WITH TROJAN HORSES

What are the trojan horses: In our country In our churches In our lives?

How do we deal with them?

Page 25: Old Testament Walkthru - Joshua, Judges (Studies 16,17)

FAITHLESSNESS OF LEADERS/JUDGES The cycle of sin begins – God raises Caleb’s brother, Ehud to

their rescue – but cycle continues. The faith of leaders’ deteriorate: Barak does not have courage to go without Deborah Gideon requires a fleece and failed on matter of Ephod Jepthah sacrifices his daughter’s life Samson allows carnality to rule his life
