OLD WOODRIDGEAN ASSOCIATION
NEWSLETTER, May 2012
NEWS FROM THE COLLEGE
Woodridge Surf Livesaving Club is back in full swing!
The Club will be celebrating 40 years in 2013 and is run
under the guidance of the forever competent Rob
Smith (Spook).
This article was sent to the paper in February …….
“On Sunday morning, members of Woodridge Surf Lifesaving
Club’s ‘C’ Squad performed a rescue in dangerous seas when
2 visitors to St Francis Main Beach found themselves in dire
straits. The 2 ladies, down for an early morning swim, were
very quickly dragged out to sea by a strong rip current.
Squad Members, using rescue boards and rescue torpedo
buoys, swam out and secured the patients. After the
lifesavers had calmed them down, they were safely brought
through the surf and returned to the beach.”

Woodridge welcomes Mrs Desire Christian, our new Deputy Head of the
College.
Mrs Christian joined Woodridge at the beginning of the year, after holding a
post for 4 years as the Deputy Head at Elkanah House in Cape Town. Prior to
this, she taught at Rondebosch High School and Pretoria Boys.
Desire has a Masters Degree in the Philosophy of Education from UCT.
Some of you may remember Sydney Puwe, who was a grounds staff member and a long-serving driver
for Woodridge. After a short illness he passed away on Saturday 28th January. He will be sadly missed by
the pupils and staff.
The Cast and Woodridge Choir are currently preparing for the staging of this hilarious musical from 25 to 28 July,
which will be staged in the Woodridge Hall.
With such an outrageous title, this musical is certain to raise
much interest!
URINETOWN has been billed as “one of the most uproaringly,
funny musicals in recent years”. It spins a tale of greed,
corruption, love, and revolution in a town where water has
become so scarce, that it is worth its weight in gold. This
musical also questions the sustainability of our lifestyle in a
satirical manner.
Lead characters for this show are Grant Fox, Emily Bradley,
Liam Niven, Miliswa Mbandazayo and Megan Harris and the
cast is directed by Mrs Carika Rademan. You are urged to
pencil these dates into your diary, because this show is not to
be missed! Contact [email protected]

Branch Visits
A successful visit was made to the Western Cape in March. The Times Square Café, in Century City, was the
venue for the Cape Town based OWA’s and was enjoyed by all.
The Trumpet Tree was a great hit in Stellenbosch and about 10 UCT students joined the rest of the gang for a
wonderful evening! This has been the best turnout ever in Stellenbosch with close to 40 Old Woodridgeans
getting together! Well done to the youngsters for making the effort
