FROM YOUR PASTOR’S HEART

What an uncommon thing Jesus did for us in going to the cross for our sins. Paul put it this way, “Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Ro. 5:7-8, NIV). The word uncommon means “extraordinary, special, distinguished.” Truly, what Jesus did at Calvary and what the Father did in raising Jesus from dead is uncommon—extra- ordinary, special, and distinguished! An important implication steming from the uncommon thing that God has done for us is that our individual lives and our shared life together as a church should be—uncommon.I recently received a copy of a book entitled The Uncommon Church. It is written by Pete Pawelek, one of my former seminary students who pastors a large church near San Antonio, Texas. In his book Pete challenges us to make the uncommon, common again by becoming uncommon people in uncommon churches. As we live in the resurrection power of Jesus Christ, it is possible that in a plain, ordinary world we truly can have uncommon relationships, experience uncommon prayer, show uncommon caring, give uncommon forgiveness, experience uncommon sharing and giving, have uncommon attitudes, exhibit uncommon commitment, do uncommon work, engage in uncommon discipleship, and obtain uncommon victory. All of these areas of our lives become uncommon—extraordinary, special, distinguished—as we live in the resurrection power of Jesus Christ. It is my prayer that we

will be an uncommon church filled with uncommon Christians experiencing the uncommon power of Jesus Christ.

LADIES BIBLE STUDY – April 1

Ladies This is Our Night!Who are We and Why are We so Special?

On April 1 our ladies Bible study group will meet in the Parlor of Old Greenbrier Baptist at 6:30 p.m. They will continue their study of Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul by John & Stasi Elderedge. It will be a wonderful time of sharing the Bible and learning how wonderful we are as women made in the image of God. If you need a book or have any questions, please contact Deborah Bryan. All ladies from our church and our community are welcome. We look forward to sharing God's awesome Word with one another.

We had more than thirty children and youth at our Faith Weavers “Build Your Own Pizza” event on March 3. Since then we have averaged a dozen children each Sunday evening.

Our Faith Weavers Singers will sing as part of our worship service on Sunday, April 7. We look forward to children and families participating

together in worship. On Sunday afternoon April 7 from 4:30-6:30pm we host our second Faith Weavers event—“Build Your Own Sundae” Sunday.

Faith Weavers will continue to meet each Sunday afternoon in April in our Fellowship Hall from 4:30-6:30pm.

In May, our Faith Weavers girls will host a special Mother’s Day Tea Party to honor their mothers on Saturday, May 4 at noon.

In June our Faith Weavers guys will host a Father’s Day Bar-B-Que to honor their dads on

Saturday, June 22 at noon. Faith Weavers is an outreach ministry of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church to the young people of the Alderson community. We believe that personal faith in Jesus Christ is

critical in every person’s life. The goal of Faith Weavers is to weave faith into the fabric of our young people’s lives by presenting Jesus Christ and His way through looking into God’s word, enjoying fun activities, and building friendships.

Without Jesus . . .

Without the risen Savior in our hearts, life is like: A chocolate Easter Bunny – empty on the inside; An Easter bonnet – easily blown off kilter; Last year’s Easter outfit – it doesn’t quite fit right; An Easter Lily – it soon withers and dries up A bag of jellybeans – sugary and sweet but lacking substance; An unfound Easter basket – full of gifts that spoil and go to waste; A colored Easter egg – looks great but cracks under pressure; The Easter bunny – always hopping here and there; Marshmallow Peep – becomes hard when opened up; Easter Parade – a long journey with no destination; An unopened Easter card – a message of love unclaimed.

–David Patterson

AMA Summer Work TeamsOur Alderson Ministerial Association (AMA) will sponsor three work teams in our community this summer.

Calvary Baptist Church, Seaville, NJ – This group of American Baptists will be with us from May 1 – 5. They will be a team of about fifteen adults led by Jonathan Kleinman. They will be able to do a variety of construction and repair projects.

First Presbyterian Church, Honesdale, PA – This group will be with us from July 14 – 19. Led by Chris Scheuerll, they will consist of about twenty high school students and their adult leaders. They are open to help with a variety of projects.

Oaklyn Baptist, Oaklyn, NJ – This group of friends will be back with us from July 21 – 27. This team of fifteen adults is led by Fred Daugherty. They have been coming to Alderson for several years and are a seasoned and well-skilled team. We look forward to the return of our friends from New Jersey.

We have the teams, but we need projects for them to do. We are accepting applications for work to be done by these teams. We need several projects for the summer. If you have a need or know of a need, please fill out a work team assistance application. They are available at the Alderson Thrift Store, the back of our sanctuary, or by contacting

Pastor Bill. Don’t delay; apply today.
