YOU COULD BE A PART OF OUR
EXCITING FUTURE
Chairman’s Notes Welcome to our Annual Christmas Concert here in Oldham Parish Church. If you have been before, you know that we will have a good time together as always. Do please sing up in the carols – it’s your chance to become
honorary choir members for the evening – although if you like to sing, you could always think about joining us! New voices are welcome in all parts, especially in the men’s sections. Ask any choir member for details. It is a great pleasure once again to be able to welcome the Oldham Band (Lees) as our guests this evening. The sound of a brass band leading the carols, is one of the magical sounds of Christmas, and I am sure that we will all enjoy their solo items too. They are a musical ensemble that Oldham should celebrate, and we feel proud that they are always so keen to link up with us. This season there will be a further opportunity to to hear the band and choir performing together, since we are planning an evening of popular music for a summer’s evening at the Middleton Arena on Sunday June 19th. This concert marks a break from our recent tradition of performing Gilbert & Sullivan with the National Festival Orchestra to close our season. As we move into 2016, our immediate thoughts turn towards the moving Requiem by Johannes Brahms, which we will be singing – in English, in the wonderful Concert Hall of the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester on Saturday May 7th. The programme also includes the joyous Te Deum by Dvorak, and as a special treat – and whilst the choir take a well-deserved rest, our talented accompanist Angela Lloyd-Mostyn will be playing the popular Piano Concerto by Schumann. Thank you for all your support, and I hope you enjoy this evening’s concert. Fred Jones.
PROGRAMME
WE all stand for the CAROL: Once in Royal David’s City
Once in royal David's city stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for His bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.
He came down to earth from heaven, who is God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable, and His cradle was a stall; With the poor, and mean, and lowly, lived on earth our Saviour Holy.
MALE VOICES ONLY
And through all His wondrous childhood He would honour and obey,
Love and watch the lowly Maiden, in whose gentle arms He lay: Christian children all must be mild, obedient, good as He.
FEMALE VOICES ONLY
For He is our childhood's pattern; day by day, like us He grew;
He was little, weak and helpless, tears and smiles like us He knew; And He feeleth for our sadness, and He shareth in our gladness.
ALL
And our eyes at last shall see Him through His own redeeming love; For that Child, so dear and gentle, is our Lord in heaven above,
And He leads His children on to the place where He is gone.
And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed (George Frederic Handel) O Holy Night (Adolphe Adam arr. NW)
Deck the Hall (arr. John Rutter)

OLDHAM BAND (LEES)
We Three Kings - Traditional arr Mark Freeh Euphonium soloist - Harrison Heeley
When a Child is Born - Zacar/Jay arr John
O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by. Yet in the dark streets shineth The everlasting Light The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight.
O morning stars together Proclaim the holy birth And praises sing to God the King And Peace to men on earth. For Christ is born of Mary And gathered all above While mortals sleep, the angels keep Their watch of wondering love How silently, how silently The wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven. No ear may hear His coming, But in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him still, The dear Christ enters in.
O Holy Child of Bethlehem Descend to us, we pray. Cast out our sin and enter in, Be born to us today We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell. O come to us, abide with us Our Lord Emmanuel.
Golland We all stand for the CAROL: While shepherds watched
Sung to the tune ‘JACKSON’ - composed by one of our former conductors, Robert Jackson. It was during his term of office, (1890 -
1900), that the choir first admitted ladies to its ranks.
While shepherds watched their flocks by night All seated on the ground The angel of the Lord came down And glory shone around
"Fear not," said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled minds "Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind."
"To you in David's town this day Is born of David's line A Saviour who is Christ the Lord And this shall be the sign.
"The heavenly Babe you there shall find To human view displayed
All meanly wrapped in swathing bands And in a manger laid."
Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith Appeared a shining throng
Of angels praising God, who thus Addressed their joyful song
"All glory be to God on high And to the earth be peace;
Goodwill henceforth from heaven to men Begin and never cease!"
The Christmas Song. (Tormé arr. NW)
Calypso Carol (John Berthelot)
OLDHAM BAND (LEES)
White Christmas - Irving Berlin arranged by Philip Sparke A Christmas Finale - Paul Lovatt-Cooper
We all stand for the CAROL: In the bleak midwinter (Holst) 1. In the bleak mid-winter Frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, Water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, Snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter Long ago. 3. Angels and archangels May have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim Thronged the air - But only His mother In her maiden bliss Worshipped the Beloved With a kiss.
Hallelujah Chorus (George Frederic Handel) Jingle bells (arr. Willcocks)
Choir and band: We need a little Christmas (Jerry Herman)
We all stand for the final CAROL: Hark the herald angels sing
Hark the herald angels sing "Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth and mercy mild God and sinners reconciled" Joyful, all ye nations rise Join the triumph of the skies With the angelic host proclaim: "Christ is born in Bethlehem" Hark! The herald angels sing "Glory to the newborn King!"
Christ by highest heav'n adored Christ the everlasting Lord! Late in time behold Him come Offspring of a Virgin's womb Veiled in flesh the Godhead see Hail the incarnate Deity Pleased as man with man to dwell Jesus, our Emmanuel
Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Son of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings Risen with healing in His wings Mild He lays His glory by Born that man no more may die Born to raise the sons of earth Born to give them second birth
2. Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him Nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away When He comes to reign: In the bleak mid-winter A stable-place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ 4. What can I give Him, Poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a wise man I would do my part; Yet what I can, I give Him - Give my heart. .
