all musicians need to synchronize theirselves with the electronix by using the click track.
the electronic output must be routed as follows:
output channels dac~ 1 (tape) / dac~ 5 (live electronix) to loudspeaker 1 (on stage, left)
output channels dac~ 2 (tape) / dac~ 6 (live electronix) to loudspeaker 2 (on stage, right)
output channels dac~ 3 (tape) / dac~ 7 (live electronix) to loudspeaker 3 (behind the audience, left)
output channels dac~ 4 (tape) / dac~ 8 (live electronix) to loudspeaker 4 (behind the audience, right)
output channels dac~ 1–8 to subwoofer (behind the audience, central)
output channels dac~ 9 (click left) / dac~ 10 (click right) to wireless click track transmitter (or headphone amplifer)
direct amplifcation of voices and instruments to loudspeakers 1 and 2, subwoofer
fnd smooth, subtle panning settings according to the ensemble setup on stage
all live-electronic processes are fully automatized. their sonical results are notated in simplifed terms in the »electronix« staves in the score.
in the max patch, after having enabled the computer keys by clicking on the respective toggle, the piece can be started by pressing the space
key. by pressing the esc key, all processes will be immediately stopped. by pressing the letter keys (A, B, C, etc.), it is possible to jump directly
to the respective section of the score. please always make sure of having pressed esc once before starting anything anew.
the akai ewi, a midi controller which is played like a woodwind instrument, must be connected to the max patch. there are wireless
(www.bit.ly/2abduox) as well as USB versions (www.bit.ly/29W6I98). converting the fngering and the wind pressure into midi values, the akai
ewi will allow the clarinet player to, more or less randomly, manipulate the sound of the voice artist through their playing. the notes in the
upper octave (C6–A6), however, will trigger some fxed harmonizer presets. this feature is activated automatically in the max patch in the
respective passages of the piece.
the video should be screened through rear projection (in case of need: overhead projection) on a canvas of approximately 3,5 x 2 metres
standing at ground level on the stage, to the left of the ensemble setup. the size of the video projection must be set in such a way that the
persons in the video appear exactly live-sized.

text
i'm swallowed by the tide. i'll swim in purple light. i'll overcome the fright. i'll refuse to step aside. we're floating in the tide. we're getting sheer and light. we're sparkling in the night.

unser eiapopei! eiapopeia! eiapopei!«6
agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.

-
legend
voice artist:
highest pitch possible.
breathe in / breathe out heavily and noisily.
undertone chant.
clap their hands (preferably close to the headset microphone).
speak (or shout, or whisper, or exclaim, according to the instructions written in the score) fastly and
without specifc rhythm througout the total duration of the respective note value.
6
-
overtone chant; improvisingly, but with exact fundamental pitch.
only normal-shaped notes are to be sung; small rhombic and x-shaped notes indicate pitches
which are synthetically added through the clarinetist's playing of the akai ewi.
»bulgarian chant tremolo«: a special technique of bulgarian women's choirs. a vocalic tone, sung
with extremely throaty timbre, is attacked repeatedly through a very fast pulse of glottal stops
which results in a permanent cracking of the voice.
the backwards-speaking should be performed in such way that a recording of these passages,
played backwards in turn, would be as comprehensible as possible as a semantic sentence.
very hard and noisy, almost »plop-like« articulation of »p«, like a loud beat-box bass drum sound.
7
-
»fake singing«: only mouth movements and facial expressions are to be performed, as appropriate
also subtle gestures (however never theatrically or exaggeratedly), but absolutely silently.
vocal multiphonic (without specifc pitches).
sing random pitches, preferably not »in (chromatical) tune«.
lingual click, namely a palato-alveolar click: the apex of the tongue is pressed on the foreside of the
hard palate and then retracted quickly, resulting in a sound which should be similar to a popping
cork.
molto vibrato (very dramatic, as in romantic opera).
quarter tone accidentals: minus ¾ tone | minus ¼ tone | plus ¼ tone | plus ¾ tone (f.l.t.r.).
8
-
the vowels used for the notation of some coloratura singing passsages without semantic text (like 8 , 8 , 8,̃ 8 etc.) follow the list of IPA
(international phonetic alphabet) symbols provided by the german wikipedia: www.bit.ly/1Z9lTKC since the english wikipedia unfortunately
lacks a similarly functional index, an english translation of the entries which are required for this piece can be provided by the composer
upon request. Arrows behind the vowels (8 8 ) indicate a smooth and fuent transition towards the next vowel.
clarinet:
futter tongue.
highest pitch possible.
rhombic notes indicate harmonics based on the normal-shaped lower notes.
all multiphonics in this piece follow heather roche's index of dyad multiphonics for b fat clarinet
(www.bit.ly/29XOKgL) and are marked with their respective number (e.g. »roche #16«).

in passages with akai ewi, rhombic notes indicate the fngering, and dynamic indications indicate
the strength of the wind pressure.
speak (or shout, or whisper, or exclaim, according to the instructions written in the score) fastly and
without specifc rhythm througout the total duration of the respective note value.
sing (in the style of a renaissance motet).
growling (at the lowest pitch possible): guttural singing technique as found for instance in many
death metal songs. very noisy, throaty, loud and rough. whenever possible, these notes might also
be intonated one octave lower or growled in such a way that undertones may emerge. since guttural
singing techniques are very complicated to learn and the result will be strongly depending on the
individual possibilities to handle vocal extreme situations, it is recommended to contact the composer in order to explore performative
options in consultation with each other. the following passage from bring me the horizon's song »suicide season« – albeit sung by a male –
might convey an approximate idea of the sound and the energy intended for the growling passages in this piece: www.bit.ly/29TuY7R

»fake singing«: only mouth movements and facial expressions are to be performed, as appropriate
also subtle gestures (however never theatrically or exaggeratedly), but absolutely silently.
sing random pitches, preferably not »in (chromatical) tune«.
molto vibrato.
quarter tone accidentals: minus ¾ tone | minus ¼ tone | plus ¼ tone | plus ¾ tone (f.l.t.r.).
piano:
mute the strings within in the range indicated, preferably with different pressure and on different
nodes of the strings, also fuently changing by shifting the position and the weight of the hand
continuously. without snaky line: mute very tightly, no shifting of position or weight.
11
-
harmonics, tapped on the strings of the lower notes (in brackets); the rhombic notes indicate the
effectively resulting pitches.
tremolo (touch repetition of the same key as fast as possible).
sing (in the style of a renaissance motet).
sing random pitches, preferably not »in (chromatical) tune«.
speak fastly and without specifc rhythm througout the total duration of the respective note value.
12
-
percussion:
soft mallet. drumstick.
medium mallet. jazz brush.
hard mallet. triangle stick.
wooden (glockenspiel) mallet. heavy, large gong mallet.
hit on the bow of the cymbal. hit on the bell of the cymbal.
hi-hat shut. hi-hat semi-open (cymbals rattle against each other).
hi-hat open. smooth, stepless transition between two states.
rub with superball. mute everything.
13
-
sing (in the style of a renaissance motet).
sing random pitches, preferably not »in (chromatical) tune«.
zither:
speak fastly and without specifc rhythm througout the total duration of the respective note value.
strike at a knitting needle which has been jammed between the 4–5 lowest strings.
14
-
hit empty strings with the tuning key.
e-bow on a string (exact pitch).
hold coins (or the like) against the oscillating strings, resulting in a buzzing, metallic sound.
mute the strings within in the range indicated, preferably with different pressure and on different
nodes of the strings, also fuently changing by shifting the position and the weight of the hand
continuously.
bow (preferably with double bass bow).
15
-
mute strings with some aluminium foil wrapped around the fnger, resulting in a randomly buzzing,
metallic sound.
drop a handful of coins softly onto the string.
hit strings strongly with the hand palm.
speak fastly and without specifc rhythm througout the total duration of the respective note value.
sing (in the style of a renaissance motet).
16
-
sing random pitches, preferably not »in (chromatical) tune«.
molto vibrato.
cello:
tremolo.
left hand pizzicato.
very high bow pressure (»overpressure«).
sing (in the style of a renaissance motet).
17
-
sing random pitches, preferably not »in (chromatical) tune«.
smooth, stepless transition between two states (e.g. »high bow pressure« to »ordinardio«)
molto vibrato (highly dedicated and dramatic, indeed emotive, with a large range and
very fast, as in late romantic symphonies).
quarter tone accidentals: minus ¾ tone | minus ¼ tone | plus ¼ tone | plus ¾ tone (f.l.t.r.).
