The Sisters of Notre Dame are committed to Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation as a Way of Life. In preparation for SND-USA coming together as one province in July of 2020, they have created a formal plan for work in the areas of Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation (JPIC). This Ministry on the Margins outreach focuses on Education, Advocacy and Direct Service. From their website- Jesus told us in Luke 4: 18: “The spirit of the Lord is upon me; therefore, He has anointed me. He has sent me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, Recovery of sight to the blind and release to prisoners…Today this scripture is fulfilled in your midst.” Jesus wants us to announce, tell, alert the people so that all will know he is among us by how the glad tidings, the good news is reaching the poor. Are those held captive by unjust public policy and practices noticed, attended to? How are those addicted to violence, greed, lust, distain for “the other, someone not like them” recovering their sight, forgiving themselves and their neighbor, offering release to those they hold captive? These are big questions— too big to tackle alone. In the (JPIC) office, together we will “hunger and thirst for justice.” Together we will turn justice into a verb— we will do it, be it, and bring it. In addition to working toward some definitive outcome—the right of everyone to have access to water—or working toward some definitive event—a parish sponsored program that promotes peace with justice, or a celebration or achievement about justice– together we can proclaim by words, prayers and actions that the good news of the gospel is consequential with life. My position title is Co-Director of the SND National Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Office with a focus on Advocacy and Education. I will facilitate activities advocating social action and justice through legislative change and ongoing education to carry out the SND mission for systemic change for the poor and marginalized, especially women and children. I will be working with the SND community to administer programs and educational materials and recommend action steps through various outlets. I will network with social action, service agencies and advocacy organizations locally and nationally to develop cooperative programming to address social justice needs of designated areas. I am very excited about this new opportunity! I am also very nervous about stepping out of the box I have been in for more than 15 years. I have spent a lot of time listening to God, and although I am afraid, God reminds me, “Be not afraid, I go before you always.”

Gathering Hymn I Will Praise Your Name

David Haas

1. I will give you glory, my God above, and I will bless your name forever. Ev’ry day I will bless and praise your name forever. 2. The Lord is full of grace and mercy, who is kind and slow to anger. God is good in ev’ry way, and full of compassion. 3. Let all your works give you thanks, O Lord, and let all the faithful bless you. Let them speak of your might, O Lord, the glory of your kingdom.

4. The Lord is faithful in word and deed, and always near, his name is holy. Lifting up all those who fall, God raises up the lowly.

The Liturgy of the Word

* 1st Reading: 2 Samuel 5: 1-3 *

In those days, all the tribes of Israel came to David in Hebron and said: "Here we are, your bone and your flesh. In days past, when Saul was our king, it was you who led the Israelites out and brought them back. And the LORD said to you, 'You shall shepherd my people Israel and shall be commander of Israel.'" When all the elders of Israel came to David in Hebron, King David made an agreement with them there before the LORD, and they anointed him king of Israel.

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Response *

Psalm 122: 1-2, 3-4, 4-5 Scot Crandal

1. I rejoiced because they said to me, “We will go up to the house of the LORD.” And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem.

2. Jerusalem, built as a city with compact unity. To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD.

3. According to the decree for Israel, to give thanks to the name of the LORD. In it are set up judgment seats, seats for the house of David.

* 2nd Reading: Colossians 1: 12-20 *

Brothers and sisters: Let us give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and

for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Verse: * Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!

Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! ( Mark 11: 9, 10 )

* Gospel: Luke 23: 35-43 *

The rulers sneered at Jesus and said, "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God." Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself." Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews."

Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us." The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation? And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

The Gospel of the Lord. PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord!

November 24, 2019 In today’s Gospel, Jesus is being taunted right after being hung on the cross. It’s not enough that they are murdering Him in gruesome fashion, they have to add insult to injury, yet Jesus speaks not a word in His own defense. Then two men also being crucified speak. One taunts Jesus, just as everyone else has been doing. The other, speaks to his companion and reminds him that they are being punished under the law for crimes for which they are indeed guilty, and that Jesus has done nothing criminal. He then asks Jesus to remember him when Jesus comes into his Kingdom. Jesus replies, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Now think about this for a minute. Here is Jesus, being tortured in a truly horrible fashion, calmly blessing a fellow victim. I don’t know about you, but when I don’t feel well, there is only a little chance that I will be gracious, but Jesus is truly suffering and still has time for another human being. When I consider this, this concern for another under the direst circumstances, I see that Jesus truly is, the King of the Universe, and as I fall to my knees before Him, I ask for His blessing and His help to become the person I am meant to be as I grow in love and slowly, haltingly, learn to be a better and more generous follower of Our lord. Amen » As I pray with today’s scriptures, how will I be moved » “To see thee more clearly,

Love thee more dearly, Follow thee more nearly, Day by day” ?

» I stop in my prayer and meditation on this scripture passage and choose just one act I can do for another in order to become more Christ like?

» I write this down, decide how I will do this, then go forth in action. I follow this with planning a second and a third and so on until I begin to grow as Jesus has modeled.

Sunday greetings from Rome! I pray this finds you healthy, happy, and holy. It has been quite rainy here these past few weeks, which the locals tell me is unusual this early in the fall/winter season. Temperatures have been in the upper 50s for highs and upper 40s for overnight lows. I understand that Cleveland has seen snow and experienced bitter cold temperatures already! Wow!

On a recent day off from school, my two classmates at the Pontifical Biblical Institute and I took a trip to the Catacombs of Priscilla in Rome. It is a 40 minute bus ride from my residence. The catacombs are an amazing underground labyrinth of tombs (nearly 40,000 according to the docent!) that contained the bodies of ordinary Christians, martyrs, popes, and saints. It was good to visit the Catacombs in this month of November when we remember the saints and pray for our deceased loved ones. The frescos from the 4th century are amazing and vibrant. The oldest fresco found to date of the Blessed Virgin Mary is there. You can discover more on these catacombs here: http://www.catacombepriscilla.com/index_en.html One of the blessings of studying and living in Rome is the connection to the universal Church. My classes are filled with priests, religious, and laity from across the world, all of whom have been sent to Rome to study on behalf of their local Diocese or religious community. It is inspiring to meet a diverse group of people who share the same faith and have a deep love for Christ and His Church. It makes the world that much smaller, and living in the local Church of Rome with the Vicar of Christ and the Successor of Saint Peter (Pope Francis!) makes this journey a truly unique experience. Matthew 16:13-19 is a worthy reflection point for me while living in Rome. So, too, is my favorite Gospel passage: John 21:1-19. As you read these two beautiful stories, may I ask you to kindly please remember me, this local Church of Rome, and Pope Francis in your prayers; you are in mine with love and gratitude. Fr. Anthony, sss

Knight’s Corner  For those parishioners who may not know, we are the

Knights of Columbus Council #11831 and we serve the needs of both Out Lady of Guadalupe and Ss. Cosmas and Damian Parishes. This past Sunday, the Knights attended the 9:00 Memorial Mass for the Deceased at Ss. Cosmas and Damian. Brother Knight , Don Ungar, was particularly remembered when Fr. Mike used Don’s chalice during communion . The chalice is one that our council often presents to the family of a deceased Knight. A reminder that the Knights are hosting a Pancake Breakfast today (November 24th) at Ss. Cosmas and Damian after the 9:00 and 11:00 Masses. We will also have a table at the Ministry Fair taking place all morning in the same room as our breakfast. Come on over to Twin Haven and enjoy an all you can eat pancake breakfast! On December 12th, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Knights will be participating in the procession at the Mass with Bishop Amos. Everyone is invited to the Mass and the reception afterwards. On the mornings of December 9, 10, 11, &12th, we will be helping at the Downtown VA Medical Center, by distributing Christmas Gift Bags to all the veterans. If you are a Catholic male who would like to thank those veterans who have given so much for their country and are available any morning that week, call our Grand Knight, Don Burke for more information at 216-509-7797.

On December 12th the welcoming committee is planning a special get-together in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe feast day. There will be a taco bar for refreshment, great Community Fellowship, and a festival of trees. We are asking Ministries and families in our Parish to contribute a

themed decorated 3 foot artificial Christmas tree and there will be a silent auction so you may acquire the Christmas tree of your choice. Profit from this auction will go to our Ministry For Those In Need . Please join us on December 12th for the 6:30 mass and festivities afterwards.
