abbage in <une &)). abbage was an =nglish mathematician, who first had the idea for

a programmable computer.

on abbage>s $nalytical =ngine. %hough mechanical, this machine was an important step

in the history of computers? it was the design of a mechanical general;purpose computer.

abbage wor!ed on it for many years until his death in &-&. However, because offinancial, political, and legal issues, the engine was never built. %he design of the

machine was very modern? it anticipated the first completed general;purpose computers

by about &11 years.

detail a method for calculating certain numbers with the $nalytical =ngine, which have

since been recogni@ed by historians as the world>s first computer program. 9he also saw

possibilities in it that abbage hadn>tA she realised that the machine could compose pieces
