Introduction of Charles Dickens• Charles Dickens was a prominent
writer of English literature• Was Born on 7th February 1812 at a
house in Mile End Terrace, Portsmouth, Hampshire
• His father, John Dickens, worked as a clerk in the pay office of the Royal Dockyard.
• Family moved to London in 1815 when John was posted there.
Oliver Twist the true literary piece as it is , reflects the social condition of its
time.
Society of Victorian age
The Victorian era was a period full of changes; the most important was the reign of Queen Victoria, who ascended the throne in 1837 and ruled the British Empire, restoring stability to the crown. Her reign is considered one of the most prosperous in her time, which eventually became the symbol of a period that took its name, "the Victorian Era"
Condition of workhouse

Children were starved and ill-treated
The workhouse were ill-managed. They were inadequate to help the real poor.

The whole thing was hypocrisy .

Lower class people struggle for getting food ,clothing and shelter

Conclusion
• Oliver Twist novel is the mirror to show the real society of Victorian age
• Dickens' aim to only amuse people and show and light up the dark side of the society
• In Oliver Twist for poor class people society is like hell and for upper-class people it is like heaven
