How much? On your own quickly guess how much one
banana costs on its own?
Who does the money go to?
Cost?
Learning objectives ALL pupils will be able to name the different
people involved in the banana trade.
MOST pupils should be able to explain how much money different people in the banana trade get.
SOME pupils will be able to assess why some people receive more than others in the banana trade.
Banana split You are going to be working in groups of 5.
We are going to look at all the people involved with getting you banana from the Caribbean to the UK.
A non-Fair Trade banana.
Your roles Each person in the group will take one of
these roles. Banana worker. Plantation owner. Shipper. Shop owner. Importer and ripener.
You will be given information to find out about your role in the banana trade.
Role cards Before we get into our groups we are going to
read through out role cards.
I need 5 volunteers.
Groups Get into your groups below. Group 1:
Olivia, Jordan J, Dharma, Lily & Lee. Group 2:
Jake, Lisa, Darren, Chantel & Sunny. Group 3:
Connor, Michaela, Beth, Lennon & Punit. Group 4:
Jordan K, Jacob, Liliana, Shadya, Kai & Khairiyah. Group 5:
Callum, Dillan, Michelle, Emily, Daniel & Neve.
A non-Fair Trade banana in the UK is sold for approximately 30p.
Your task is to write down how much of that 30p your role SHOULD get. (keep it a secret from the rest of your group)
Complete the task sheet.
When you are done we are going to add up how much a banana costs in your group.
Group discussion
What makes for a good group discussion?
Each person now has a chance to present to their group why they should get that amount of the money. Each person wants as much of the 30p as possible
but the whole group must agree at the end.
EXT: What did you disagree about in your group? How did you overcome these disagreements?
Write down the amounts you have decided on onto the banana split sheet.
Presentations Next lesson you are going to feed back to the
class explaining how you have divided the 30p.
Each person must explain how much their role got and why they got this amount.
You have the rest of the lesson to practice.
Another group will be assessing how good your presentation is.
Group work.
In your books write down:
Two things you have enjoyed while working as a group.
One thing that was difficult working as a group.
