Polarization and Decline: America’s 21st Century Decline and Pushback, three-part seriesAPR. 13, 14, 15; APR. 20, 21, 22; APR. 27, 28, 29
Gene Bigler, Retired Visiting Professor
This three-part lecture will examine the growth of
political polarization and economic inequality in
the U .S . since 1970 . Part two will focus on how
meritocracy and corruption have co-mingled to further
undermine American institutions . The final lecture
will focus on the people and forces who are fighting
to overcome America’s decline before the lines are
fully drawn for the 2020 national elections . Prominent
geo-historian Jared Diamond concludes his latest
book, “Upheaval: Turning Points for Nations in Crisis,”
by speculating whether the United States may have
already begun a national crisis as momentous as
those of the Japanese Shogunate, Weimar Germany,
Chile under Allende, Sukarno’s Indonesia and other
cases he compares in his study . The growing
controversies related to the Trump administration, the
potential for an impeachment contest, the worsening
of the stalemate in Congress and the deterioration
of America’s global economic position have led other
respected commentators to similar conclusions, such
as Steven Brill in “Tailspin: The People and Forces
Behind America’s Fifty-Year Fall .”
Separating Church from StateMAY 4, 5, 6
David Diskin, Instructor
Although the words “separation of church and
state” never appear in the U .S . Constitution, this
phrase by Thomas Jefferson has impacted our lives
and freedoms ever since the U .S . Supreme Court
referenced it in 1879 . But what do these words
mean? Why was Jefferson affirming this separation?
And how has the First Amendment’s establishment
clause been used to defend the rights of the religious
and non-religious at every level of our government?
In his lecture, David Diskin discusses the history
of these words and their impact, along with recent
decisions that protect religious freedom and the
conflicts that arise between opposing worldviews in
our courts and our lives .
