Principal’s Message

PRIORITY SCHOOL REVIEW

On Wednesday, we had our 12 month check-in to look at the progress our school over the past 12 months. The

feedback from our review was absolutely OUTSTANDING!! We will receive a full report in the next few weeks.

The major points to celebrate include:

positive culture which permeates the whole school

all staff 'buy-in' - teachers value the work and want to practise and consolidate the work we have been

doing over the last 12 months

staff articulated an increase in knowledge of teaching reading and use of data

they told us they had never been to a school where teachers were ready to teach from Day 1 and

congratulated us on our Student Free Day program

Teachers loved the time for planning and are now sharing ideas face-to-face and via other means

high level commitment to the improvement agenda by all staff

the reviewers loved that we were flexible with how teachers display learning goals, but were consistent in

that they all had them and they were student friendly - bookmarks, post-it notes, on student desks etc.

students they spoke to could articulate their goals - yay!

instructional leadership around our data processes - very impressed - good systems in place

acknowledgement of keeping the work going (consolidating e.g. reading demands in other learning areas)

Next steps - consolidation, consolidation, consolidation

The reviewers acknowledged the HUGE amount of work teachers and the leadership team have accomplished,

working together to improve outcomes for our students.

SCHOOL STRATEGIC PLAN

Last year, we undertook a community consultation process, to determine the focus for our 2019-2022 Strategic

Plan. One of our strategies, was Say it in Six, where we asked you for your opinion in Week 6. We conducted an

online survey as part of the consultation. Here are the results:

Our 2019-2022 Strategic Plan, reflects the outcomes of our survey. Our school’s Strategic Plan has been endorsed by our Assistant

Regional Director and President of our P&C. It will be available on our website in the near future.

SCHOOL LEADER INDUCTION CEREMONY

Our school leader induction ceremony was held in the Hall this week. This special assembly was for students in Years 4-6, with parents

of school leaders invited to a special morning tea. I was so impressed with all of our leaders, particularly our School Captains, who led

the ceremony. I am also so proud of the cultural diversity of our school, which is represented by our student leadership team. We

congratulate our newly elected leaders and look forward to working with them throughout the year.

Early next month, our School Captains will attend the National Young Leaders’ Day held at the Convention Centre. This day is full of

practical ideas for young leaders and always has a range of inspiring and interesting guest speakers. Each session will have one or two

speakers, question times, short videos, learning exercises, student involvement, and student interaction.

Congratulations to all of our 2019 leaders.

Thank you to Mrs Glenys Harrington, for the fantastic work she does to develop our student leaders.

Our Class Captains also received their badges this week. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend, as we were meeting with School

Improvement Unit Reviewers. Thank you Mr Shaun Gordon for providing our students a voice, through our Student Council. Our Stu-

dent Council is made up of class representatives from each Year 2- Year 6 Class. The Student Council meets regularly to discuss is-

sues brought up by our students.

P&C AGM to be held 12 March

Just a reminder that the Annual General Meeting of the Parents and Citizens Association for Collingwood Park State School, will be

held on Tuesday 12 March 2019 at 7:00pm. At this meeting, all Executive positions and sub-committee positions will be declared va-

cant and a committee will be elected for 2019.

If you would like to be part of our community group, please fill out a nomination form for a committee position and come along to the

Annual General Meeting. Nomination forms are available on-line or at the Office.

Positions for election: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary.

Every day counts! Successful learners attend school very regularly As we come to the end of Week 4, parents are reminded of the importance of children attending school every day. Being at school

every day counts, with one day absent each week quickly adding up to 8 weeks (almost a term/quarter of the year) of missed les-

sons in a year.

Unless your child is ill, it is expected that your child will be at school learning every day of the school year, as school absenteeism can

impact significantly on students’ learning and wellbeing. Research shows that higher student attendance is associated, on average,

with higher student achievement, and that attending school every day helps children to build necessary skills such as communication,

teamwork and resilience.

Our hours are 8.45am – 3.00pm, and children arriving after 9am in the morning will be required to go to Reception where they will

have a late slip issued, and the late arrival recorded. Parents collecting their child early, before the end of the day, must go to Recep-

tion and be issued an Exit slip to present to the child’s class teacher before they will be released.

Further information for parents is available on the Every Day counts website, Department of Education and Training: http://

Collingwood Park State School is a member of the Land for Wildlife Scheme. This means that our school is creating and protecting the wildlife habitats on the school property. If you see wildlife on the property please do not approach, pick up or remove the animal. If you see an injured animal, please notify the school office who will call a registered wildlife carer or transport the animal to the RSPCA at Wacol.

Volunteer Induction

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve had the pleasure of running induction sessions for 27 volunteers. We have a hard working and

committed staff but we can achieve so much more for our students with extra help so it’s wonderful that so many people are willing

and able to give their time and help out.

If you would like to volunteer at our school but missed the recent induction sessions, please get in touch. I’ll be running more induction

sessions throughout the year so look out in the newsletter and on our school Facebook page where I shall advertise the dates as they

approach.

Please ensure that you do not park in the car park of the local shop when you are picking up or dropping off your child. The

shop car park is for their customers only. Please use the street parking on Collingwood Drive.

Our school would like to acknowledge the support of local businesses who support our school

community by donating various products and services. Please support Mister Minit at Redbank Plaza, Archimedes at Redbank and also Redbank News at Redbank wherever possible. Supporting local business keeps jobs in our community.

Everyday Counts—Information about being absent or late If your child is going to be away from school, it is important that the school is notified of the reason for the absence as soon as possible. The school should be notified of any planned absences such as appointments, and any unplanned absences, preferably in writing, either before or on the day of the absence or as soon as practicable. This may take the form of : a) a medical certificate; b) a written explanation provided to the school via a note, email or text message containing the student’s name, date of

absence(s) and reason for absence(s); c) a verbal explanation to the school through either a phone call or a visit to the school office or d) a note in the student communication diary. If your child is going to be late, parents are asked to please notify the school using one of the following processes: a) accompanying the child to the school office and providing a verbal reason for being late; b) phoning the school; c) emailing or sending a text message to the school or d) providing the child with a signed and dated note. Thank you for supporting your child’s learning.
