NUT SAFE SCHOOL - ALLERGY ALERT!

Our Lady of Lourdes is committed to the safety and well-being of all students and staff. We recognize that those students and staff with life threatening or severe allergies need a safe environment in which to learn and work.

OLOL does not permit peanuts or peanut products at school. We would ask students to bring “nut-free” products each day.

Please remember to always check food labels. Thank you!

SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

Our first school mass of the year will take place on Tuesday, September 13th @ 9:20 am in our school gymnasium. We always encourage parents and family members available to attend. Please come and join us for this special celebration.

SEPTEMBER SCHOOL MASS

RYAN’S LAW (Bill 20) - ENSURING ASTHMA FRIENDLY SCHOOLS

As you may be aware, Ryan's Law, 2015 (Bill 20), was passed last year by the Ontario Legislature. This piece of legislation is an important step to support the well-being of students with asthma in Ontario schools. If your child has asthma, we ask that you contact the main office this week (519-660-2775) to provide information about your child’s asthma medication. The Ministry of Education website has resources on asthma that can be found at: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/healthyschools/anaphylaxis.html

The OLOL school newsletters are sent home monthly as well as being posted on our school website. In an effort to streamline our methods of communicating with families we send the newsletter electronically rather than a paper copy. If you have not yet done so, please forward your email address to Mrs. Vachon (secretary) to

receive our newsletter by electronic format at [email protected] .

Your email address will only be used to send the newsletter and/or other pieces of information usually sent home from the school in paper format. Please feel free to contact the school should you have any questions.

Hot Lunch and Milk ordering information will be sent home this week for all students from Grades JK - 8. New this year we will be offering hot lunches every Thursday of the month. As well, we are moving to an online ordering format. Online ordering instructions will be included in the information sent home. These orders are optional for families. Orders are to be completed online by Monday, September 19th . Please contact Allison Bruno at [email protected] with any questions.

OLOL SCHOOL COUNCIL CORNER

Welcome Back OLOL Families - We hope you had a wonderful summer! Your School Council Members are just as excited as the OLOL Staff and Students for the 2016-2017 school year to begin! The next couple of weeks will be dedicated to brainstorming, planning and putting together a list of things to achieve this school year. Last year was such a success, we’d like to build on that momentum to make this year truly awesome. School Council We hope you’ll consider becoming a part of School Council this school year. Joining School Council is a rewarding, exciting opportunity for you to get involved in the school/community and have a positive impact on your child’s school experience. There are lots of ways to get involved, so we hope you’ll join us at our first meeting of the year on Tuesday, September 20th @ 7pm in the school library. Self-nomination forms will be sent home in September looking for parents to fill our Council Executive voluntary positions. Forms will be used to determine voting members of Council and satisfy our by-law requirements. Completing the form does not mean you are nominating to become a Council “Board” Member (Chair, Co-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer). Upcoming Events The OLOL welcome back BBQ is scheduled for Wednesday September 14th (5-7 pm). We hope to see you there! More information to follow. Volunteers Needed!

BINGO Fundraisers raise approx. $10,000 a year for our school community. It’s extremely important that we have enough volunteers for our scheduled dates or else we lose them. A few hours of your time can make a big difference. We are looking for volunteers for the upcoming 2016/2017 BINGO dates.

Please contact Monique Duffy ([email protected]) if you are able to volunteer. Thank you again to the OLOL families, Staff, Students, “Graduating School Council Members”, our community and our sponsors for your involvement and contributions last year. We are blessed to have had such amazing support. We look forward to working with you again this year! OLOL Catholic School Council

PARENT PERMISSIONS - WALKING/LUNCH/PHOTOGRAPHS

A consent form will be sent home regarding photos, lunch arrangements and short walking excursions within our community. It is important that we maintain on file your consent for participation. Thank you in advance for completing and returning this form to your child’s classroom teacher.

We strive to make our school inviting and welcoming to all members of our school community. We ask all parents and visitors to Our Lady of Lourdes to please report to the main office immediately upon entering the school to ensure the safety of students. If students are leaving early, parents are asked to report to the main office and your child will be paged down from their classroom. Parents picking up their children at the end of the day are asked to wait outside and the classroom teacher will escort the students to their appropriate door. Your continued support regarding this matter is appreciated.

PICKING UP STUDENTS

VOLUNTEERS

All parents and members of our community are reminded that if you would like to volunteer in any school related activities you are required to complete a Criminal Background Check. If you are planning on volunteering in your child’s classroom or the school in any capacity we would ask that you come in to the main office to pick up a form letter to begin the process. If you have already had your check completed last year, all that is required of volunteers is that you fill out an “Offense Declaration Form” available at the main office. Please contact the school should you have any questions (519) 660-2775. Thank you for your continued support regarding student safety.

Luis’ Photography will be in our school on October 4 & 5 to take our student photos. Photo packages will be sent home prior to this date.

Please have your child bring in their packages on the day of pictures.

TERRY FOX EVENT

Our very own Terry Fox School Event will be held on Thursday, September 29th in the afternoon. As in previous years we will be hosting a school-wide event (walk/run) and will be fundraising to support the Terry Fox foundation. Please mark this date on your calendars. Our kick-off assembly will be on Wednesday, September 14 at 9:30 am.

Parents - join us if you can for what we hope will be a beautiful day for an important event!

Recess time is an opportunity for students to gather with friends and take part in self-initiated play. Recess periods are monitored by staff to ensure safe and courteous behaviour.

Unless exceptional circumstances prevail, all students are expected to go outside during recess periods. Students who are too ill to go outside should remain at home until they are feeling better.

RECESS TIME

STUDENT DENTAL SCREENING

SCHOOL BUS & WALKERS SUPERVISION

Safety continues to be a top priority in our school. Morning supervision and bus entry BEGINS AT 8:45 am. All buses have been directed to not allow students off until precisely 8:45 am. Staff supervise the bus zone and play area. All students (Gr. 1-8) will be required to remain outdoors until the bell rings at 8:55 am. As always, primary students are supervised in the primary area during this time. Please do not drop your child off earlier than 8:45 am as there is not supervision available until that time.

ROSARY PROGRAM

Again this year we are pleased to welcome the Living Rosary In The Schools Program. Once a month, volunteers will teach students to pray the Rosary in individual classrooms (grades 1-8) in the presence of their teacher. The Rosary In The Schools program promotes devotion to Jesus through Mary by pondering the mysteries of the Rosary and liturgical themes. The Living Rosary Program in Schools is serving Catholic elementary schools across the LDSCB system.

As part of School Health Services in schools served by the Middlesex-London Health Unit, registered dental hygienists from the Middlesex-London Health Unit do annual screenings in certain grades at Our Lady of Lourdes School.

This program allows the Health Unit to assess the dental health in our school community, tailor preventive dental programs and inform individual parents of any child needing individual care. (Children requiring care may be re-screened several months later to look for improvement). Please remember this screening is NOT a substitute for a dental exam.

If you as a parent do NOT wish your child to be involved with this health unit program, please write a note and send it to school with your child’s name, grade and teacher to indicate this. Any questions may be directed to the Dental Services, Middlesex-London Health Unit at (519) 663-5317 ext. # 2231.

STUDENT AGENDAS

Student agendas will once again be available to all students from grades 1-8. Your School Council is supporting the cost of agendas. Therefore, no money is required for agendas. Thank you Council!! As you all know, agendas are an excellent organizational tool. Students will be expected to utilize their agendas to note homework assignments and reminders. Establishing good work habits is essential for success. Students are encouraged to share agenda information with their families. Please sign page 2 confirming that you have read and reviewed with your child all of the information noted.

Page 6: OLOL Newsletter September 2016.pdf

Please let us know if your child has an allergy or medical concern that the school should be made aware of.

STAFF DIRECTORY

We are requesting the support of parents in reminding students to keep all electronic devices (I-Pods, cell phones, MP3 Players, cameras, video games, etc.) at home. The school cannot be responsible if such items are lost or stolen and the use of such items is not

permitted during the school day. Communication will be extended to parents on those occasions when teachers are encouraging students to bring and use devices at school.

Please contact Mr. Gregory if you have any questions. We appreciate your support in this matter!
