We are very fortunate at O’Loughlin to have outstanding leaders, from ourStudent leaders to our Executive Leaders.  They are leaders that ‘others willfollow’ and we particularly try to follow how Jesus led, as Servant Leaders. Yesterday afternoon, I met with our Middle Leaders team to discuss theimportant issues of the day.

Dear Members of the O’Loughlin Catholic College Community, This Sunday 31st May, the Catholic Church across the globe will come together tocelebrate Pentecost, or the ‘birthday’ of the Church. As a College, we will we gathered(virtually), together with Fr Peter Hendriks MSC, to celebrate this special event. Thecelebration of Pentecost recognises the Holy Spirit descending upon the Apostles andsending them throughout the nations of the world to live out Christ's calling, to makeJesus known and loved throughout the world. As Pope Francis has said, we pray that through the Holy Spirit we are touched by thegrace of our Lord:  The prayer we make to the Holy Spirit is for the grace to receive his unity, a glance that, leaving personal preferences aside, embraces and loves his Church, our Church.  It is toaccept responsibility for unity among all, to wipe out the gossip that sows the darnel ofdiscord and the poison of envy, since to be men and women of the Church means beingmen and women of communion.  It is also to ask for a heart that feels that the Church isour Mother and our home, an open and welcoming home where the manifold joy of theHoly Spirit is shared.   BYOD (Bring your own device) Just a reminder to all families that it is an expectation for students in Year 8 -12 to havetheir own laptops, which students are required to bring to the College each day. If forwhatever reason your son/daughter does not have a laptop, I ask that you please contacttheir Year Level Coordinator to discuss possible ways in which the College may be ableto support your son/daughter. O’Loughlin Catholic College (OCC) is committed to providing opportunities to prepareour students to live, work and be successful in the 21st century’s world of technology. To facilitate this, our teaching practices at OCC aim to be student-centred by providingstudents with the opportunity to become independent learners. The BYOD policysupports the College in achieving these aims.  Study Skills Tips

As Year 10 and 11 students prepare for their end of Semester exams, and a numberother students are in preparation for tests, it is important that students develop theskills for memorising notes.

May the Spirit bless us …May the face of all creation shine upon us …the grace of life be within our soul.May we find in the eyes of a baby the light of truth …And in the branches of the trees, arms to hold us …And in the warmth of sunshine be surrounded and caressed by thegentle light of the moon…May our own heartbeat accompany us into fullness of lifeAnd as our feet meet the earthand as the wind caresses our facebe blessed with all of creation as one with God.    God Bless,

1. Make your notes as brain-friendly as possible, point form, tables, diagrams and no big long sentences or paragraphs.2. Start the memorisation process of your notes early, don’t wait until just before the test or examination.3. Memorisation involves testing yourself over and over and over and over. So read a section, then see what you can say or write down without looking. Then go back and see what you got wrong or didn’t know. Put a pencil mark next to these bits.4. Now focus on the bits you didn’t know. Say them out loud, repeat them to yourself, write them down a few times.5. Then test yourself on those bits again and see if you remembered more this time.6. Do this over and over and over again. Then do it one more time again.7. Make flashcards or use a flashcard App on your phone to create flashcards on the parts you find hard to remember. Review these every day before the test.8. Make a list of the key concepts you find hard to learn and each night read through them just before you go to sleep and first thing when you wake up as these are powerful memory times.9. Do lots of practise questions without looking at your notes or the answers to see if you can a) remember and b) apply the information. Review the things you did not remember again.10. Your job is to keep testing yourself in order to find out which bits have not stuck in your memory yet so you can review these until they do.

O'LOUGHLIN CATHOLIC COLLEGEExecutive TeamHead of Middle SchoolCatherine HivesHello everyone, I hope the term is going well for you all and things aresettling, as we get back into routine with a few things going ‘back tonormal’ with your after school and weekend activities starting back.

Today - I want to focus on the image/quote that has been sent throughfrom Parent TV “ I think that when the dust settles, we will realise howvery little we need, how very much we actually have, and the true valueof human connection.” I really liked this one, as it really ‘connects’ wellwith our College and the reasons that I love being a part of thiscommunity. Connection is so important in all avenues within our school:academically & pastorally – as it’s our connection with the students, each other, teachers, families and wider community. And from thisstrong connection becomes our relationships! With good relationshipswe continue to stay true to our College Motto of ‘Make us one’ - andconnection is what starts us to get there. Our connections face to face have been adjusted slighted, as manywould say but I personally think it has forced us to really focus on ‘whatit means connect’ with those around us. For this week I challenge you to‘really connect’ with each other, your families, work colleagues, thepeople you encounter at the shops and most importantly yourselves.Share a smile or laugh, pause to take a breather and be grateful for thethings around you, and/or spread a little more kindness to those aroundyou. But most importantly to be a little more ready to actively listen tothose who you connect with and discuss the emotions you may befeeling. Talking is such a great way to connect but active listeningreally allows for further trust to keep the relationship strong. And don’t forget to check out the new parent TV links for this edition. Thanks for reading, listening and connecting in,Catherine Hives

Greetings during this changing time! This term in Year 8 Religious Education we’re learning about the book ofRuth and parables. Danielle Cockett has created a brilliant comic strip inresponse to reading the 4 chapters. I am constantly amazed by thefantastic work of our students and eager to bring you more examples oftheir impressive work. Good job Danielle! On Friday we will have a whole school Mass for Pentecost. This is whenwe celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit on the disciples of Jesus afterhis Ascension, held on the seventh Sunday after Easter. We are going tocelebrate our Pentecost Mass this Friday at 10:15am and it is going to bea little different. We are going to Zoom (Video present) the whole Massinto each of the homerooms. Fr. Peter Hendriks from St. Paul's Parishwill be presiding in the library where we will be filming to cast out to thewhole school in their classrooms. I encourage you to go on our FacebookPage as we are also going to cast it live for our community! May you have a blessed day and I look forward to seeing you on theFacebook Live! Senior School

As we head into the busy end of thesemester and the exam period it isimportant to discuss how the pressure ofhigh school exams is one of the firstpressures in life that teaches students thevalues of dedication and commitment. Here are some valuable tips on howstudents can prepare for exams. Study Alone You should study alone as much aspossible as friends often don’t agree onwhat to study together and study sessionsoften become chat sessions that do notoffer any learning. Even if you want tostudy with friends, make sure your friendshelp you learn rather than distracting you. Get a Good Environment It is also smart to study in a goodenvironment where there are nounnecessary noises or distractions.Libraries or your personal rooms can bethe safe havens for study if you let them.Just make sure you don’t have a TVscreen, phone or a play station in yourroom to tempt you. Have All Things You Need You should sit with all the books, notes orstationery items you need during thestudy session to ensure that you don’thave to get up often and forget what youhave learned to date. Eat Healthily When you are studying you should eathealthy. It will ensure that your mind staysactive. Don’t gorge on coffee or junkfoods as they won’t help. Start from the Beginning Always study according to thechronological order of the chapters. Thisis because the first few chapters alwaysserve as the base for your learning.

Take Regular Breaks It is also advised that you rest your bodyand mind for 15 minutes for every houryou study. It will ensure that you don’t gettired or just study for the sake of it.Rejuvenating yourself would help youlearn better after the break. Seek Help In case you can’t understand a concept, you need to seek help. You can ask yourfriends, parents, siblings, tutors orteachers to lend you a hand. Test Yourself Once you are sure that you have studiedand understood a chapter, you need totest yourself on the topic to make surethat you don’t forget anything. A writtentest is always better than an oral one. Sleep Right Many students make the mistake ofstudying late at night. This may hampertheir sleep patterns and make them feeldrowsy later in the day. So, you shouldensure that you get at least 8 hours ofsleep every night as it will ensure you feelfresh every day. Learn Every Day Last but not the least, if you want to aceevery exam, make sure that you keepstudying from day one and not try to justpass the exam by studying in the last fewdays before the exam. When you studyfrom the start with equal dedication, youwill always get good results.

Middle School

Peer Support ProgramEach year our year 7 students participate in thePeer support Program as part of theirtransition into secondary school. Normally thiswould involve year 11 students taking aleadership role and facilitating the program, but in 2020 we have changed this and haveprovided the year 10 students with thisleadership opportunity. Year 10 studentsnominated themselves for the chance to bepart of the program and spent two daystraining in order to facilitate Peer Supporteffectively. For almost 50 years Peer Support Australiahas provided essential support to Australianschools to positively impact the wellbeing ofchildren and young people. Healthierrelationships, positive school culture andimproved student wellbeing are some of theresults seen by participants of the program. Itis evident from O’Loughlin’s encouraging andcompassionate culture that this program hasmany benefits.

“I like that we play games at the end of the lesson and year 10’s are okay” - Caden Langridge “Having Peer Support acts as our way to learn how to have help in year 7. Not only does it give us incredible mentors, it also shows us what to expect in middle/high school” - Denham Crocker “I like that we got to play games at the end and they were really fun games. Those year 10’s were cool too :)” - Elijah Millard “I like the Peer Support leaders because they are friendly and kind and we get to play games” - Robert McConville

Year 7 students have responded positively tothe program and have provided the belowfeedback:

The year 7 cohort look forward to enjoyingwhat the Peer Support Program and their newyear 10 mentors/friends have to offer duringthe rest of Term Two. Mrs Maree HammerYear 7 Team Leader

Health and PEAthletics

Exciting News! One of the biggest disappointmentsdue to Covid-19 restrictions was the cancellation ofour annual Athletics Carnival. However, with restrictions slowly lifting and ourmiddle school students practicing track and fieldevents in their PE classes the school has decided torun some lunch time exhibition events.Unfortunately, due to the time restraints completingthe events at lunchtime means we can only have somany participants for each event. For field events in Weeks 7 and 9, Middle Schoolstudents will be selected from their class results. ForSenior students they will be given the option to signup for events. For track events in Week 10 allstudents are able to sign up prior if they wish to run.

MathematicsMaths Students in a Twist

Part of the Middle School Maths Enrichment program at O’Loughlin is learning how to do the Rubik Cube. The Rubik's cube was invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik, a Hungarian architect, who wanted a working model to help explain three-dimensional geometry. But now it has become so much more than that. It has featured in films like The Pursuit for Happyness, singers like Justin Beiber can solve it and the world record is, believe it or not, an astounding 3.47 seconds! Learning the Rubik cube started out about teaching students about algorithms (following a set of rules) but it became so much more than that. Other areas of a student’s learning also addressed are:

Growth Mindset

Develops focus & concentration skills

Persistence – learn from your mistakes

Feel you’ve achieved something special

Improves short and long term memory skills

Picture the steps in your mind

Fun

Form of meditation

Use 2D images to represent 3D scenarios

Clarity of language

Great party trick

Grows your brain!

It also allows wonderful opportunities for the students to become the teacher, either to their peers (below left) or teachers (below right; with Jacob teaching Mr Blackadder).

If you already have a cube at home you can following the tutorials created by Mr Bament and his students at:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGj5i3BuGxhj6vzw8ACwj2mHl6NRCTtqlOr you can buy one from places like Woolworths or K-Mart for less than $20.Or students can come to MW3 any recess or lunchtime to hone their skills. For students who were already able to solve the cube, or learn to solve it, we’ve had timed races (record so far has been set by Kabir with 50seconds) and students have been challenged with other cubes like the Mirror Cube, 2x2, Void Cube, 4x4 and many more. What is the Big Science Competition?

The Big Science Competition is an easy way to challenge studentsfrom years 7 to 10 and track their performance against state ornational averages. It’s a 50 minute, multiple choice competition testing critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, not just factual recall, so youcan find out what’s really going on inside their heads. Questionsare set in real-life, contemporary contexts, making them relatable(and interesting).

Thank you to Mr Rivas for organising the event!
