seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter

Dear Parishoners,

Gratitude is when we recognize that something is valuable to us. While we need to be grateful all year round, I always associate gratitude with the month of November because of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the time for us to be grateful to others and to God for all the good things we have received.

What are you thankful for? I know you refl ected on this question this past Thanksgiving Day, but I invite you to keep asking yourself this question all year round. I am grateful for God’s love revealed in each one of you here at OLPH, for all the times I have been inspired by your witness of faith, and for the abundant blessings we have received from God. Let us remain thankful to God and let us pray for those who struggle in life. May they experience the closeness of God within their hearts.

The faith is alive at OLPH. We sure know it when we see our sixty plus ministries in action. Last weekend, CRHP or Welcome 2.0 had their annual men’s retreat. What a wonderful opportunity it was for many men from our community to deepen their spiritual lives. The CRHP formation team worked so hard to make this weekend a success and we can already see the fruits of their labor.

At the same time a Kairos retreat took place at Cabrini Retreat Center. The effect the retreat had on the youth was invaluable. Kairos means God’s time; it was indeed a time for them to encounter God in their lives. We thank Fr. Paddy and his team for a wonderful retreat.

These are just two examples from the life of the parish but so much more happens daily; from Russell Stern’s concert last Sunday to Guild 30’s Fall food drive; from the Respect Life baby bottle collection to the Soul Core ministry; from the Men’s Club Annual Christmas Party for the inner-city children to the Middy Mags fundraiser for Sister Paulanne’s Needy Family Fund. That’s how we know the faith is alive at OLPH.

This weekend is the last Sunday of ordinary time. On this last Sunday of the liturgical year, the church celebrates the solemnity of Christ the King. Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 to honor Jesus Christ as Lord over all creation or King of the universe. No early king will give us eternal peace and justice but Christ alone. The kingdom of Christ is supreme in love, eternal in time, universal in reach and spiritual in nature. At the end of time, when Jesus Christ comes back to fulfi ll His promises, His glorious kingdom will reign forever.

This Sunday’s readings help us to refl ect on the doctrine of the Kingship of Christ. Since the Old Testament, Christ Kingship has been revealed. The prophet Daniel tell us his vision of the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven; and the Son of Man, who is Jesus, received dominion, glory, and kingship; all peoples, nations, and languages serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that shall not be taken away, his kingship shall not be destroyed.

In the New Testament, Paul utters the most beautiful expression of Christ as King. In the letter to the Philippians 2: 10-11, Paul writes: “In the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those that are in heaven, on earth and under the earth: and every tongue should confess that the Lord Jesus Christ is in the Glory of God the Father.” We, Christians, long for the second coming of Jesus, for at the end of times the reign of Christ will be fulfi lled. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “the one who is and who was and who is to come,” the almighty.

To Jesus Christ be glory and power forever and ever.

Thoughts on the

Sunday

Scriptures

The exchange between Jesus and Pilate in today’s Gospel is, arguably, the most important exchange in all of literature. Pilate asks Jesus: “What have you done?” Jesus replies that he tes fi es to the truth. In the second reading we are reminded of the essence of that truth: Christ, ruler of all, loves us, liberates us from the bonds of sin, makes us into new kingdom. As we approach the Advent season, this week would be a good me to refl ect on

the ques on:What have we done in our daily lives, in our ac ons, words, private prayer, and in our interac on with others, to tes fy that Jesus is Lord?

Dr. John Shea Presents:

Seeing Haloes: Christmas Poems to Open the HeartevOLve Adult Education Ministry

December 15, 9:30 am, McDonnell Hall

Many Christians complain that Christmas often happens without them. They look forward to the season, but they experience it as rush, excess, and exhaustion. Dr. Shea has used the metaphor ”Finding the Child” to describe this experience. Christ may have been born, but they cannot fi nd the child- they are not experi-encing the Christmas revelation.

He states: “The Christmas season is unavoid-able. But whether Christmas happens for us is a question. It depends if we get in its way.”

Getting in its way means slowing down and doing something out of the ordinary, some-thing that has to do with the spiritual meaning of the feast and the season.

We will read and refl ect on poems to bring Christmas home. Each poem hopes to strike a cord and bring us into memories we may have forgotten and present experiences we may have overlooked. When this happens, Spirit arrives to illumine our minds, inspire our wills, and gladden our hearts.

Christmas happens!

About the Speaker:

Dr. John Shea is a theologian and storyteller who lectures nationally and internationally on faith-based health care, contemporary spiritual-ity, storytelling in world religions, and the spirit at work movement.

Fall Food Drive Success A Note of ThanksSpecial thanks to all who contributed to Guild 30’s Fall Food Drive. Hats off to each of the guild’s mem-bers for all the work they did to fi ll the shelves in the Sharing Room and the pantries at our four Sharing parishes, Our Lady of Tepeyac, St. James, St. Sabina and St. Philip Neri. Thanksgiving was brighter for thousands of people because of the support and success of this drive!

Please continue to support the on-going food drive as the pantries we serve work to keep their shelves fi lled to combat hunger which daily knocks on the door.

Too Busy to Shop for the Food Drive? Mail a donation, made out to OLPH Church, indicatingSister Paulann's Needy Family Fund in the memo line, to Lou Marohn, 2132 Fir Street, Glenview, IL 60025. Food will be purchased in case lots to maxi-mize your donation.

Toys for Needy Sharing Parish KidsPick up a new toy and brighten Christmas for needy children at our Sharing parishes. Toys can be deliv-ered to the Sharing Room now through Christmas. No wrapping necessary. Bless you for your kindness!

Donations for Thanksgiving and Christmas Meals for the NeedySpecial thanks to Jewel Foods, (Patriot and Lake) for collecting donations for turkeys for Thanksgiving. Well over 100 were distributed to the needy families served by Sr. Paulanne as well as to Sharing pantries we serve.

Jewel will once again be collecting donations for Christmas ham dinners, with Sharing being recipients of these meals. Shop the store, donate, and brighten Christmas for a needy family.

A Sharing Story from a Sharing VolunteerA mother and a 12 year old boy were interested in donating turkey dinners through Jewel. The boy asked his mother for her keys, since he left his money in the car. He came back and wanted to donate $60! I took $20, though he wanted to give it all, and told him he was very generous at $20. An hour later he came back and insisted on donating the other $40 since nothing was as important as giving to the poor! His mother stood back and proudly watched her son donate all of his money. He certainly was liv-ing the gospel on the parable of the poor woman! I was overwhelmed by his generosity since I felt it was all of his savings! A beautiful moment to witness.
