Dear Parishioners,

“For to everyone who has, more will be given…”

One of the great divides in thinking has to do with the scarcity mindset vs the abundance mindset. The author Stephen Covey coined these terms in his best seller, “The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People”. Scarcity mentality refers to people seeing life as a finite pie, so that if one person takes a bigger slice, that leaves less for everyone else. Resources are limited, micromanaging prevails, short term thinking rather than long term thinking. An abundance mindset refers to the belief that there is plenty out there for everyone. It’s seeing the world as having so much more to offer. A sense that we have only encountered the tip of the iceberg of possibilities.

Long before Stephen Covey and a legion of life coaches, were the teachings of Jesus Christ. This weekend’s gospel is a case statement of the Lord’s belief in the unconditional power that his love can have on our lives.

In the Kingdom, all is possible, all dreams can be achieved, all limitations conquered. We have been given so much! We can never exhaust God’s mercy and love. We are a week away from celebrating the Feast of Christ the King. We are citizens of a Kingdom that is abundant in its gifts and graces.

During these months of coping with COVID 19, I have seen the contrast of the scarcity mindset vs the abundant mindset. We can dwell on the limitations that COVID has placed on our freedoms, our connections with one another, the limits of social interaction. I have heard many laments about all that “COVID“ has taken away from their lives.

An abundance mindset invites us to look at all that God has blest us with. How much more families have shared meals together and spending time together. The time to go for long walks and reconnect with old friends. We can sense a deeper appreciation of the power of parish and the blessed gift of the eucharist. Moments like First Communions, graduations, weddings and baptisms have taken on a more powerful and intimate meaning as we encounter them in their essence.

I have witnessed an abundance of kindness, of patience, of compassion. There has been so much and there is so much more to encounter!

The Men’s Club Raffle and the Women’s Club Holly Fair were great successes as both events evolved in light of COVID.

Thank you for your generous support of the Catch-Up Sunday Appeal. We have raised over $200,000 to close the gap between our budgeted and actual collections. Thank you!!

You will soon be receiving a copy of our Annual Financial Report. Parish financial reports are often limited to bar graphs and pie charts with lots of numbers. This report tells a powerful story of what we were able to accomplish because of the sacrifices you have made. Thank you for your faithful stewardship! Amid unprecedented challenges, we have invested in our mission and thousands of people have been touched.

We are constantly upgrading our live stream capabilities. We have come a long way from those days in mid-March to a remarkable capacity to spread the Good News. I am so grateful to Rob Orr, Jim Geldermann, Terry Luc and John Nicolau. Thank you to you for your patience, as new features are introduced; sometimes we experience glitches.

One of the most popular liturgies has been the Drive-In Mass that attracts people from all over. Here too, we are always tweaking the production. We moved down from the upstairs patio to the first-floor porch to prepare for the changing of the weather, this has limited the ability for many to see the mass. We are moving to the third-floor conference room windows to try and present a more visible liturgy. Let us know what you think if you attend that mass.

May your week be abundant with God’s blessings!

Fr. Jerry Boland

Thoughts on the

Sunday ScripturesIn today’s Gospel, Jesus delivers the parable of the talents; using the example of money rather than abilities or skills. It’s a story about investments, risks and returns.

Stewards understand that God has given them an abundance of spiritual gifts. They know God doesn’t want them to simply receive these blessings and bury them in fear, but to multiply them; to use these gifts to serve Him and others; to spread Christ’s Good News; to go and make disciples of others.

Good stewards invest what God has given them in the service of others and are prepared to render an account when the Lord returns.

Reflect this week on how you are returning your own God-given gifts back to God with increase.

Upcoming Holiday ProtocalsThroughout the COVID crisis, OLPH has adhered to the protocals issued by the state of Illinois and by the Archidiocese of Chicago. Although this has been a challenge for all of us, following these regulations has kept us as safe as possible, both staff and parishioners alike. Please keep that in mind as, over the next few weeks, we announce our plans for celebrating the Holiday season, from Thanksgiving through Christmas.

Dispensation for Sunday and Holiday Masses

The Archdiocese has given dispensation for all Catholics from attending Mass throughout the Holiday season. In the coming weeks, OLPH will be releasing our Christmas Mass schedule. We will be offering as many Masses as physically possible. It is imperative that any parishioners who wish to attend Christmas Mass register through Signup Genius once the schedule is announced.

Of course we will continue to livestream Mass as we have been doing and our Christmas Mass will be available for viewing from our website and other social media. We encourage all families to view Christmas Mass together from your homes if you are not able to come to church.

Regulations regarding printed materials

OLPH Church has a tradition of supplying calendars and Advent Companion booklets for our parishioners.

Unfortunately, the Archdiocese’s COVID Guidelines do not permit materials in the church at this time. We will not be distributing 2021 calendars this season.

We also cannot distribute Advent booklets this year. To help you continue this tradition on your own, we have compiled a list of resources to help you purchase a companion booklet. Some products can be bought at bulk prices so reach out to your family members, friends, and ministries to see if they want to purchase with you.

OLPH is committed to providing the safest environment possible for our parishioners. Through love and respect for one another, our staff and congregation have prevented an outbreak so far by carefully following the Archdiocese Guidelines.

We will continue to adhere to these procedures to the best of our ability so we can continue to worship, pray and receive the sacraments together as one family in Christ.

Thank you for your understanding and your cooperation!

A Befriend a Family Appeal…“We walk with fear, but live with faith.” I wish I could thank you personally and I pray God continue to bless you during these troubled times.

I am a 30 year-old mother that worries but gets up every day ready to tackle whatever comes my way. But this year has been the most traumatic and challenging year for me and my family.

During the beginning of March my son was diagnosed with ADHD. So when the school shut down it effected my baby both towards his education and mentality. A lot of resources have gotten limited and with no child care available, I can’t work or provide for him like I used to. I’m falling behind on bills, we barely have food. I’m not sure what’s going to happen next but all we can do is keep pushing day by day.

We are fighters! COVID won’t break us!!

I believe we are all connected. COVID didn’t just traumatically affect me, it affected all of us.

I just don’t believe in writing sad letters. I look at this like a walk through faith, good or bad.

We are looking for donors to provide holiday support for needy families, such as the one featured in the letter above. We are looking to support as many as 175 families from our sharing parishes as well as local families served by Sr. Paulanne. This year all giving will be through gift cards for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

We assign families based upon your preference for family size. You can also decide if you want to support a local family or one through our sharing parishes. You will receive a family profile. Giving is done anonymously. Contact Stacy Dolan, [email protected], for more information.

Coat DriveWe are looking for about 200 clean, warm, adult coats in response to requests from our sharing parishes. Please bag and label for gender and size to facilitate distribution at the sharing parishes. Coats can be delivered to Betty Collins at 640 Glenridge, Glenview. Please leave in front of garage.

Clothing and Housewares DonationsThe Sharing Room remains closed due to Covid. In the past, clothing donations we received were carefully sorted and most donated items were sent to agencies which serve the needy. Higher end items and items with tags were sent to the Glenview Community Church Resale Shop. This resale shop then gave Sr. Paulanne 50% of the proceeds from OLPH items they were able to sell. Items not sold were donated to Salvation Army. This resale shop sent the balance of their funds to charities which they support; all proceeds effectively benefitting charity.

While the Sharing Room remains closed, consider donating your new or very gently used, in trend, clean items to the Glenview Community Church Resale Shop, New to You, located at 1000 Elm St. They will be open and accepting donations on Wed., Fri., and Sat. between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm and on Thu. from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Please mark your donations OLPH, so that Sr. Paulanne will receive 50% of proceeds for her work with the needy.

Shop Jewel For Turkey Dinners for SharingJewel Foods (Patriot and Lake) is once again collecting for holiday dinners for Sharing. We will receive fully cooked turkeys and side dishes for Thanksgiving and Hams and sides for Christmas. We will distribute to Sr. Paulanne's Needy Family Fund clients, our sharing parishes as they express need and other outlets we serve.

Please consider shopping at the store and donate at the registers.

In the late 19th century, the Knights of Columbus took its name at a time of intense anti-Catholicism. Our founding members wanted to show that Catholics played an essential role in the exploration and development of America since its earliest days, and that a Catholic could be both a good citizen and a good Catholic.

However, anti-Catholicism persisted. In the 1920s, the Ku Klux Klan tried to stop Columbus Day celebrations and opposed Columbus statues simply because Columbus was a Catholic. We opposed the KKK then and have continued to stand up against bigotry directed at Catholics and others.

We stood up against the persecution of Catholics in Mexico in the 1920s, spoke out for the Jews of Germany in the 1930s and worked for religious freedom behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. Today, we are rebuilding Christian communities in the Middle East that were targeted for genocide. Each of us can be proud of our history of standing up for the most vulnerable among us.

Come join us in the fight for Christian values.

EvOLve Adult EducationA Virtual Presentation by Pauline Viviano

Title: "Exploring the Beatitudes"

The Beatitudes are said to “shed light on the actions and attitudes characteristic of the Christian life.” (Catechism, Art. 2.1.1717), but what is a “beatitude”? What do the “Beatitudes” mean in the context of the gospel? What do they mean in the context of Christian life today? In this presentation we will answer these questions as we explore the meaning of these “paradoxical promises” as they are found in Matthew’s gospel (5:3-12).

seek, share, rejoice -religious education...Nothing is more practical than finding God, than falling in Love in a quite absolute, final way

Dear OLPH RE Family,

I participated in my first Annual OLPH Parish Summit last Saturday via Zoom, Finding Healing and Hope in Challenging Times. I will provide you with a short reflection here. As I listened to the keynote speaker, Rev. Steve Katsouros, SJ, two things struck me: Servant of God, Fr. Pedro Arrupe SJ and cannonballs.

First, the cannonballs. Fr. Katsouros reminded us of St. Ignatius’ injuries from a cannonball, striking his leg, severely damaging and disfiguring his leg, and ending his career as a soldier. Fr. Katsouros asked, “What are the cannonballs in your life?” As a Catholic, I understand the cannonballs to be the crosses in our lives. Those experiences that deeply challenge and change us for our good although we do not always recognize the good at the time. Remember that Jesus taught us to take up our cross and follow Him, which may be a puzzling invitation.

These cannonballs or crosses in our lives are real struggle and pain. But Christ has a way of transforming crosses into resurrections and cannonballs into true conversion experiences to Him, resulting in the joy and peace of our souls and the transformation of our lives. This we may rely on.

Fr. Katsouros stated that if you had a Jesuit education, you would know that Fr. Arrupe taught, and I found the quote here:

“our educational objective must be to form men-and-women-for-others; men and women who will live not for themselves but for God and his Christ.”

Isn’t this what we hope and pray for all our children and families here at OLPH? I know that I do.

Whenever I recall Fr. Arrupe, I connect to his beautiful prayer that helped me to recognize my own falling in love with Christ, and the way His love transformed me and my life. Here it is:

“Nothing is more practical thanfinding God, than falling in Love

in a quite absolute, final way. What you are in love with,

what seizes your imagination, will affect everything. It will decide

what will get you out of bed in the morning, what you do with your evenings, how you spend your weekends, what you read, whom you know,

what breaks your heart, and what amazes you with joy and gratitude.

Fall in Love, stay in love, and it will decide everything.”

seek, share, rejoice - creation care...Creation Care Ministry OLPH Let’s Continue Greening Up This Holiday Season!Like all of you, the Creation Care Ministry has been on a bit of a hiatus since the pandemic came upon us earlier this year. You may have noticed that we have not shared with you any thoughts in the Sunday Bulletin on what we all can do to further the teachings of Laudato Si’. But it is time for us to get back at it, particularly with the Holiday Season coming fast upon us.

With that in mind, there was an article recently in the Environmental Defense Fund’s Fall 2020 issue that you might find easy to follow and help avoid the needless waste that can occur this time of year. The article entitled “How to make online shopping a safer option for the planet”, by Joanna Foster, provided the following 6 tips for greener online shopping. We hope you will all think about these tips in the coming weeks!

◊ Don’t rush it. Next-day delivery options free us from the chore of planning ahead. But when you select the “I need it now” shipping option, you are contributing to the likelihood that partially full diesel delivery trucks will be patrolling your neighborhood.

When you pick a slower shipping option, companies can consolidate loads and routes and make the most energy efficient delivery. Fewer trucks also lighten the pollution for the neighborhoods surrounding depots and warehouses, which are often low income and communities of color.

◊ Think it through. When ordering, be mindful. Remember, there’s no such thing as a free return. Your credit card might be unaffected when you change your mind about a purchase, but returns essentially double the environmental impact of an order. “The impact is real,” says EDF’s Aileen Nowlan, who helps cities and companies manage and mitigate local air pollution. “You’re actually increasing air pollution in your own neighborhood.”

◊ Consumers, unite! Purchasing power can drive positive change. Tell companies that you want to hear a plan for them to clean up their act. According to Nowlan, the trucks that are responsible for the final leg of the delivery process are perfectly poised to switch to full electrification. These trucks typically drive less than 100 miles a day and are parked all night in a central location. “The technology is there and it’s cost-effective,” says Nowlan. “But these companies need to be motivated by customers demanding cleaner alternatives.”

◊ Give back. Once you’ve unpacked your treasures, it’s time to recycle or repurpose all that packaging. You can help the environment and your neighbors by using old cardboard boxes to ship donations through the Give Back Box program (givebackbox.com/works). Fill an old box with gently used clothing or household items, print the prepaid label and ship as usual. Your box will be donated to your nearest participating charity organization.

◊ Grow greener. Did you know you can use an old cardboard box to make an indoor composting bin with minimal fuss? All you need is a large cardboard box and some coco peat and rice husk ash or hardwood ash from a gardening store. Composting household food scraps is more than just a crunchy hobby. It prevents organic matter from ending up in landfills where it decomposes to release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. You can use the compost to enrich the soil for houseplants or to grow vegetables and flowers. A layer of used cardboard in your flowerbeds or kitchen garden is also a safe and effective weapon against weeds.

◊ Get crafty. Rather than buying more and more toys to keep your stir-crazy kids quiet while you work, challenge them to get creative with all that cardboard you already have lying around.

Build a dollhouse, a spaceship or a fort. You’ll be giving a second life to what would otherwise end up on the curb. You’ll also be raising imaginative environmentalists.

OLPH, let’s all do our part this Holiday Season.

Thank you.
