SPOTLIGHT SPOTLIGHT

Relaunching A LegendDeep Purple Grows Up With New Album

by Kees Baste

A new Deep Purple album, 'The House Of Blue Light', is

released this month and is the band's second LP since theirsuccessful comeback three years ago. The new album, producedbyucthe band's bassist Roger Glover, was recorded in VermontUSA during the summer of 1986 and contains songs such as 'BadAttitude' and 'Call Of The Wild'.

"The title, 'The House Of BlueLight', is taken from the song'Speed King' on our 'In Rock' al-bum. We thought it sounded rightand it gave us a good idea for thecarer," explains Deep Purple'svocalist Ian Gillan, "it was the onlytitle all five of us like. All the songshave again been written by RitchieBlackmore, Roger Glover and my-self. We have never felt so relaxedand easy during the recording of analbum."

At the end of this month DeepPurple begin the European leg of anew world tour (see dates below). What does Gillan think about theever-increasing co-operation be-

tween European record companiesand the media? Gillan, "I think it isa good thing that a kind of 'UnitedStates of Europe' is being created. With all these satellite stations thisis of course au inevitable develop-ment. It's good for us too becausen our promotion activities canreach more people at the same time.

Also music lovers no longer have todepend solely on their own coun-tries' radio and television, they canfellow musical developmentsthroughout Europe."

Deep Purple was formed in 1968in England by keyboard player IonLord and guitarist Ritchie Black -dore; the original band includednimmer Ian Paice, Galan and

Glover, the same formation thatmakes up today's successful line-up. Deep Purple's first three albumswere a reasonable commercial suc-cess, especially in the States, andthe singles 'Hush' and 'KentuckyWoman' were big hits. In 19A theband decided to change directionand became more hard -rock orien-tated releasing the 'Deep Purple InRock' LP one of the classic rock al-bums of the 70s.

"Suddenly things moved veryfast," Gillen recalls, "we didn'thave any spare time left. Everythingwe touched tamed to gold."

After the albums 'Fireball',

Ian Milian, Deep Purple's vocalist talks to Music A Media.

6

The House Of Blue Light' inspired by the legendary 'In Rock' album isreleased this month.

'Machine Head' and the extremelysuccessful double 1p 'Live In Japan, things started to go wrong for DeepPurple. There were many disagree-ments within the group and thepressure eventually caused a break-up in 1973.

"There was an amazing amountof money coming in which we hadno time to spend in a sensible wayso we just lived it up, not thinking ofthe consequences," says Gillan. "Al

certain moment it went to ourheads and we split up. We were tooyoung for such big success."

Ever since the split up therehave been rumours of a reunion butthe members of the band were al-ways too busy with other projects. Then in 1984, more than 10 yearsafter the break-up, the five originalmembers of the band got backtogether and Deep Purple, one ofpop's most legendary hard -rockbands was back on the road. As wellas touring, the band released an out-

standing and very successful newalbum, 'Perfect Strangers', pro-duced by Glover.

"The reunion exceeded all ourexpectations," says Gillan, wassomething all five of us very muchwanted but of course we didn'tknow how the public would react.'Perfect Strangers' was a very spon-taneous thing. We were full of ideasand before we knew what was goingon, the album was finished. Whenwe went back on stage after such along time it was just great; all of asudden the early 70s had comeback.

"All five of us have learned agreat deal in those 10 years. Youmight say that we have grown up.After Purple broke up we all had totake a few sops back - which was agood thing. We now know that suc-cess does not come naturally, youhave to work very hard for it. Eventhen it is not guaranteed."

Contrary to his earlierworks, synthesizers are not so prominent any more, with Diethelm playing a Spanish acoustic guitar, elec-tronically amplified and often doubled through use c/ echo and harmonizer. flecked by a very competentbmd (bass, drums, saxophones, keyboards and flutes) the album displays both moody, atmospheric themesas well as joyous, up -tempo material. Lili & Sussie- Candy Love (So.) SwedenPubl. Ariola Music, master owner Sono, contact Stefan Lagstrom on tel. 8-7670150, tlx. 10037.Again Scandinavia 7 We can't help it but the Scandinavians (especially the Swedish) have this strange af-fection for melodic Eum pop. 'Candy Love' features soft and sensual (almost cautious) vocals (by two blondSwedish girls) over a very Gazebo (Chopin)'like theme. The production is very vague and leaves much toguesswork (which is exactly the appeal of this record). The record is about to break in the Benelux throughHigh Fashion/Dureco. The duo appeared on Sky Channel recently.

MiCacla- La Isla Bonita (Discomagic) ItalyFor all info co.ct Dis.magic on tel. 2-5063331-5063830, tlx. 326350.Indeed, if Madonna .its long enough to release this neck (probably the best tnck from her 'True Blue' al-bum), others will have the credit. An easy and danceable tack, digestible for all ages and quite aptly coveredby this Italian female singer. Although thevocals are sometimes too hasty and the sophistication that Madon-na puts in is lost, the track is so commercial. one can hardly spoil it. The record is alr.dy getting some air-play in Euro, and Dureco Holland foresees potential in Benelux marl..

CD GiAideAlthough the holiday season has definitelycome to an end, many European deejays arestill on vacation and because them are not manynew tel around, there is much to re-port, making the station reports rather limitedthis week. Indeed, record companies am wait-ing with their hot releases and even the stationsthat are back in full force have not so much newmaterial to add to their playlists.

Them are no less than four prime movers inthe Top 10 European Airplay. With Madonnaholding the top position for the third week,Kool & The Gaog, Bangles (a new one is alsocoming up: see below), Alison Morel, Emusre and Robbie Nevi] are all shooting up, mak-ing the Top 10 very lively this week.

Other hot movers include Oran "Juke"Jones' The Rain (15-28), the new Paul SI-mon's single The Boy In The Babble (16-40)and the 'seasonal' single of the year: TheHousewarlins with the a cappella rendition ofCaravan Of Lave.

The highest entry in the European AirplayTop 50 this week comes from a singer whoreturned to the English charts after 29 years:Jackie Wilson with 'The Finest Girl You EverWant lb Meet': Reet Petite. An original UK hitin 1957, the single reappeared in the Englishcharts after being featured on the 'The ClassicJackie Wilson Compilation'. Now the continentis keen on the record as well and due to goodairplay on the major European marl., the sin-gle is entering at 37.

Bangles release yet another single fromtheir 'Different Light' album following therather unexpected success of 'Walk Like AnEgyptian'. The US company seem robe hesitantabout releasing this sing!, although the Bene-lux companies have won the battle in the end.And not without success: no. I Benelux, no. 1Germany and later a cross -over to the UK. Thenew single enters at 47 in the Airplay Top 50 ofthis week.

Our UK .nespondents are reactingfavourably on Rosie Vela's Magic Smile. Thesingle has already been out on the continent fora few months (the album was favourablyreviewed in M&M August 16. 1986) but may

now am the single and album (7.t') beingreleased in the UK. If the single breaks on the

'UK stations, it might influence the continentalprogrammers and/or the record company togive the single another push and to give RosieVela the success she is more than entitled to. Atthe moment the single makes a cautious entryin the European Airplay Top 50 at 50.

The rather late discovery of this particularsingle is further proof of the fact that, despiteEngland's leading trendsetting role, they arenot always the first to discover new talent.Although were not referring to the occasionalcross -over singles (like Baltimore's 'TamanBoy', Double's 'The Captain Of Her Heart' andM.C. Miker "G" & Deejay Sven's 'Holiday

Rap') there are numerous examples of major ta-lent that need a breakthrough on the continentbefore being accepted in the UK. The most ob-vious example is Simply Red and others in-clude Europe, the Top Gun soundtrack (in-cluding Berlin's 'Take My Breath Away') andCock Robin.

Although not yet out on the continent atpress time, Eric Clapton's Tearing Us Apart(with Tina Tumer on additional vocals) is al-ready getting some good reports from our cor-respond... The solid, blues based tune withthe unmistakable drum sound of Collins (whoalso produced it) will probably get anotherpush on European radio with Clanton being inthe middle of an extensive European tour.

Album Top Runners1986 had seven different number ones in theEuropean Hot 100 Albums, two less than theprevious year. While 1985 had an artist withtwo different albums at the top (Sade, first with'Diamond Life' later with 'Promise') the num-ber ones of 1986 were all by different artists. Also in 1984 (bearing in mind the Europeancharts were only initiated in March), not oneartist occupied the top slot twice in a row.

Dire Straits still hold the record for beingthe longest no. 1 runner in the Hot 100, al-though not for consecutive weeks. The Brot-hers In doss album stayed on top for no lessthan 25 weeks and this album released M '85 is,in some countries, still selling! Madonna'sTrue Blue is still occupying the top slot for the2416 (consecutive!) week and it is more thanlikely that it will surpass Dire Straits' record.Michael Jackson is the third runner up with 22weeks. The following lists are based on top po-sitions mairmiined for consecutive weeks, un-less indicated (4).

EuroAmerican

Beatby Paul Grain

This is the first am American Beat column, which will focus onEuropean acts that are hitting big in the American charts. Itsauthor is Paul Grein who writes the popular chartbeat column inBillboard Magazine. Groin, who reports frequently on pop musicfor both Billboard and the LOS Angeles Times, lives in StudioCity, California.

Los Angeles- When you think of British acts monopolising the top 40 in theAmerican singles chart, you think of the British Invasion of 1964-65, or pos-sibly the British synth -pop boom of 1982-83. You probably don't think of1986, when the headlines in the US went to home-grown stars such as Whit-ney Houston, Madonna and Van.Halen.

But whether it generated headlines or not, the record for the most Britishartists in the American top 40 was set in June 1986, when exactly half of thetop 40 hits were by British acts.

Listed in the top 10 that week were Mike & The Mechanics, OMD, Level42, Billy Ocean, and George Michael. Posted in the top 20 were CultureClub, Howard Jones, Simply lied, Boys Don't Cry and the Pet Shop Boys.

Charting in the bottom half of the top 40 were the Outfield, Phil Collins,The Moody Blues, Ruben Palmer, Peter Gabriel, GTR, the Dream Acade-my, Genesis, Simple Minds and Tears Fur Ram.

Britain wasn't the only foreign country to produce lop 40 hit makers dur-

ing 1986. Australia and Canada both yielded top five hits. Australia's INXSreached no. 5 in April with 'What You Need' and Canada's Glass Tigerclimbed m no. 2 in October with 'Don't Forget Me (When I'm Gone)'.Another Canadian act, Loverboy, reached no. 10 in March with This CouldBe The Night'. And of course Austrian artist Falco occupied the no. 1 slotfor three consecutive weeks with the Bollard & Bolland produced 'Rock MeAmadeus'.

But there was no hit streak in 1986 to compare with the amazing run in1985 where eight consecutive no. 1 hits were by foreign acts. Although noth-ing that dramatic occurred in 1986, at one point, four consecutive no. 1 hitswere by foreign acts. The string began in July with Billy Ocean's 'There'llBe Sad Songs', and continued with Simply Red's 'Holding Back The Years',Genesis"Invisible 'Pouch' and Peter Gabriel's 'Sledge.hammer.

Genesis and its past and present members wen responsible for six top 10hits during the year. The group weighed in with 'Invisible Much' and'Throwing It All Away' (no. 4 in October), while former member PeterGabriel had 'Sledgehammer'; current kingpin Phil Collins had 'Take MeHome' (no. 7 in May) and Mike Rntherford's Mike & The Mechanics hitwith 'Silent Running' (no. 6 in March) and 'All I Need Is A Miracle' (no. 5in June).

'Take Me Home' and 'All I Need Is A Miracle were both posted in thetop 10 in May, marking the first time two members of an ongoing group werelisted in the top 10 simultaneously since December 1981 when FleetwoodMac's Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham both made the mark.

Numerous members of the British "old guard" landed top 10 hits in 1986,including Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, the Moody Blues, Elton Johnand Rod Stewart.

McCartney's 'Spies Like Us', from the hit movie of the same name, climbed to no. 7 in February, though his subsequent single, 'Press, failed tocrack the top 20. The Scones' Harlem Shuffle' hit no. 5 in May, nearly 21years after they landed their first top 5 hit, 'Satisfaction'. The Moodys"YourWildest Dreams' hit no. 9 in July, also nearly 21 years after their first top 10

The Moodys are responsible for one of the moat unusual distinctions inpop history. They're the only act to land its first three top 10 hits in succes-sive decades. Their first top 10 hit, 'Go Now', came in 1965, their second,'Nights In White Satin', in 1972, and their third, 'Your Wildest Dreams, in1986.

Elton John landed two top 10 hits during the year. He was featured on Di-onne & Friends"That's What Friends Am For', the no. 1 single of the year, and on his own 'Nikita' which hit no 7 in March. And Rod Stewart climbedto no. 6 in August with 'Love Touch', the theme from the film 'Legal Eagles'.

But probably the most dramatic impact by a member of the "old guard"was made by Steve Winwood. Winwood's 'Higher Lae reached no. 1 in Au-gust, 20 years and six months after he first cracked the Hot 100 with theSpencer Davis Group's 'Keep On Running'. Only two acts have had longergaps between their first chart appearances and their first no. I hits: TomTourer (24 years) and Robert John (20 years and 11 months).

'Higher Lave', which featured backup vocals by Chaka Khan, was, infact, Winwood's first single to crack the top five. The Spencer Davis Group'shighest -charting single, 'Gimme Some Lovin', reached no. 7, as did Win -wood's 1981 solo hit, 'While You See A Chance'.

Other long -serving British acs to add to their top 10 tallies in 1986 in-cluded Dire Straits, which hit no. 7 in January with 'Walk Of Life', Hum.League, which reached no. I in November with 'Human, and Duran Duran, which seemed headed for no. 1 with 'Notorious as the year came to a close.

Four hits reached no. 1 in both the UK and the US in 1986, through mid -December: Whitney Houston's 'Saving All My Love For You, the Pet ShopBoys 'West End Girls, Madonna's 'Papa Don't Preach' and Berlin's 'YouTake My Breath Away.
