TheVenicebranchis250strongandisthelargestbranchinFlorida.TheBoardhascreatedaStrategicPlantomeetourplannedfundraisingandeducationalprograms.YouhavereceivedafileoftheStrategicPlanbyemailandcopieswillalsobeavailableatthemeetings.ThePlandefineswhatwewantourbranchtoaccomplishoverthenexttwoyears.Someofthegoalsareongoing,suchastheHomeTourandSTEMactivities.Somegoalsarenew,likeorganizingaDiversityWorkshopforAAUWmembersanddevelopingprogramsinareassuchasleadershiporfinancialliteracyforyoungstudents.Themoreweputintoourbranch,themorewewillgetoutofit.

Membership:Increase,retainandbroadenmembership,providingeducationandotherbenefits.Leadership:Thisareafocusesontheboardstructure,thebudget,andidentifyingmember’sskills.Education:Thefocusisonnon-traditionalscholarships,TechTrekCamp,STEMactivities,andnewprogramsforyounggirls.Development:Wewillraisemoneythroughfundraising,endowments,andgrants.

She’salifelonglearner…“I’dgobacktoschoolinaflash,”shesays.Currently,she’stakingupwatercolors,areflectionofherundergraduateminorinarthistoryperhaps.Thispastsummer,sheandherson,anartprofessor,andhiselevenyear-olddaughtertookoffforPariswheretheysketchedtheirwaythroughtheCityofLight.
YoumaybefamiliarwithPamaslastyear’sprogramdirector;shemightbelesswellknownasthearchitectofourbranchstrategicplan.Inthis
latterrole,we’retappingintoherprofessionalskillsacquiredinamulti-facetedcareerinhealthcaremanagement.SheretiredastheDirectoroftheCenterforHealthcareInnovationatHennepinCountyMedicalCenter,alevelonetraumacenterinMinnesota’stwincities.
Shedidn’tstartouttoreimaginehealthcaredelivery.AfteradegreeinEnglishliteratureandagraduatedegreeinlibraryscience,shebeganasalibrarian.Aftermarriage,shebecameimpressedwiththenursepractitionerssheencounteredwhilehavinghertwochildren.
Thispromptedareturntoschoolwhereshegotanursingdegreeandlater,amaster’sdegreewithaspecialtyinoccupationalhealth.StintsataVAMedicalCenterandapublichealthdepartmentledtorecruitmentbyahealthcarecompanyspecializinginemployeehealthmanagement.Eventually,shewasrecruitedbyHennepinwhere,amongotherduties,shedirectedRNcarecoordinator,socialwork,interpreterandchaplainprograms.
WhenstatefundingforMedicaidpatientswascutinMinnesota,shewasattheforefrontofanintegratedprogramdevelopedforpatientswithahighincidenceofhospitalstays.Itprovedtobeasuccessforbothpatientsandthebudget.
She’sbeenamemberofVeniceAAUWforthreeyears,recruitedbyaneighborwhoinvitedhertoourholidayluncheon.ShechairedaSIGExploringtheArts,co-chairedtheholidayluncheonin2016andmovedontobecomeprogramchair.
Whenaskedtohelporganizeastrategicplanforthebranch,sheexplains,“Youstartwiththemission.Fromthere,whatarethebroadergoalsandwhataretheplanstoreachthem?”Ifyoudon’thaveconcreteplansandawilltoreachthegoals,shesays,“It’sjustanotebookonashelf.”
It’sallaboutthemission,”sherepeats.“IlovethesocialaspectsofAAUW.It’showweengagepeoplebutthat’sameanstoanend.”Sheadds,“I’mexcitedaboutourfutureandwhat(thebranch)canaccomplish.”
Stilllearning,she’snowtakingclassesatVeniceArtCenter.“That’sjustforfun,”shemaintains.Shealsohastomaketimeforherotherpursuits,golfandbridge.

IcametoVenicefromtheChicagoarea5yearsagoandworkfromhomeasanITConsultant.MygrandmotherlivedinEnglewoodandIvisitedtheareamanytimes.MysonlivesinChicagoandmydaughterfollowedmetoFloridaandlivesinTampa.Ilovebiking,sportsandcooking.IgrewupinupstateNewYork(Elmira)andwenttocollegeatSt.BonaventureUniversityandgraduatedwithaBBAinManagement.ImovedtoColoradoandwenttoMetropolitanStateCollegeandreceivedaBSinComputerScience.Ifoundmywaybackeastandwasthefirstfull-timePCAnalystforTheNewYorkTimes.IheldmanypositionsinChicagooverthepast25years.Iam
passionateabouttechnologyandamlookingforwardtoworkingwiththeSTEMandTechTrekteams.

IampleasedtojointheVenicebranchAAUW.MyundergraduatedegreeisfromSalveReginaUniversityinNewport,RhodeIslandwhereIearnedaBSNinnursing.Mygraduatedegreemajorinmaternal-childnursingwasearnedfromtheUniversityofRhodeIsland.IearnedadoctorateinhumanisticeducationandhumanservicesfromBostonUniversity.Mycareerwasprimarilyspentinnursingeducation.IretiredasprofessorofnursingandadjunctprofessorofWomenStudiesfromtheUniversityofMassachusettsDartmouth.IcredentialedasaCertifiedGerontologicalClinicalSpecialistbytheAmericanNursesAssociationduringmyyearsasfaculty,wasappointedProgramEvaluatorofRNprogramsintheUSbytheNationalLeagueforNursingAccreditingCommission,andwasalsocommissionedbytheDepartmentofEducationinMassachusettsasRNprogramevaluator.Mylast10yearsasfacultyweredevotedtodevelopmentandimplementationofanonlineUMassDartmouthRN-BSNprogramforwhichIservedasProgramDirector.
MyhusbandDanandIarenewlyrelocatedtoVenicefromthesouthcoastofMassachusettswherewewereavidboaters.MylifelongavocationispaintingandIcontinuethejourneyinwatercolorattheVeniceArtCenter.
