THE FEAST OF THE ASCENSION

As I prepare this column it is unknown if the dispensation from Mass attendance will still be in effect. I suspect it will. Either way in Nebraska and

other states (though not all) the Ascension is observed on the 40th day after Easter – this year Thursday, May 21. (The Ascension, like the Epiphany is a moveable feast. We observe Epiphany on the Sunday closest to Jan. 6, the traditional day. Some dioceses move the Ascension to the nearest Sunday. We don’t.)

Our Ascension Masses: Wed., May 20, 5:30 p.m. St. Stan’s Thurs., May 21, 7:00 a.m. HG 8:00 a.m. St. Stan’s 6:30 p.m. HG

I plan to go to Sioux Falls after Mass on Sunday morning and will return Tuesday afternoon. There will be Mass at 8 a.m. on Mon. at St. Stan’s and 7 a.m. on Tues. at H.G. with communion services in the respective parishes without Mass on a given day.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT

OF THE PARISH IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT AT THIS TIME:

1. Your financial contributions may be mailed to the parish.

2. Dropped in the mail slot at the rectory. The front door at St. Stanislaus rectory. The door to the Pastor Center at Holy Ghost – parking lot level.

3. You may now make online contributions to your parish through the Archdiocese’s Website by credit card or direct debit. Follow the simple instructions you will find. https://archomaha.org/offertory

Reflections from the Early Church on the Eucharist

For the past couple of months we have not been able to offer public Masses. Many people have sorely missed the opportunity to join in this very important sacrament and to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist. Sadly there are others who probably didn’t notice. It is fascinating to find out how much of the Mass is the same today as it was in the earliest days. St. Justin, Martyr (100-165 AD) was an early Christian writer, evangelist and philosopher. he First Apology, In his most well-known work, The First Apology in Defense of the Christians, he passionately defends the morality of the Christian life, and provides various ethical and philosophical arguments to convince the Roman emperor, Antoninus, to abandon the persecution of the Church. Unfortunately it didn’t work. He was put to death along with a number of his students. What follows is a sampling of what he wrote about the Eucharist and the Mass. I think you will find it fascinating how much is the same now as then.

ST. STANISLAUS NEWS

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK —MAY 17, 2020 PG. 2

Fr. Sanderson

From Chapter 66 “OF THE EUCHARIST” This food is called among us Eukaristia [the Eucharist], of which no one is allowed to partake but the one who believes that the things which we teach are true, and who has been [baptized]. For not as common bread and common drink do we receive these. We been taught that the food which is blessed by the prayer of His word, is the flesh and blood of that Jesus who was made flesh (and born of the Virgin Mary). For the apostles, in the memoirs composed by them, which are called Gospels, have thus delivered unto us what was enjoined upon them; that Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, said, "This do ye in remembrance of Me, this is My body;" and that, after the same manner, having taken the cup and given thanks, He said, "This is My blood;" and gave it to them alone. the wicked devils have imitated this in the mysteries of Mithras (a pagan cult at the time), commanding the same thing to be done. (Of course it was not possible that any such change could take place.

From Chapter 67 “WEEKLY WORSHIP OF

THE CHRISTIANS” And on the day called Sunday, all who live in cities or in the country gather together to one place, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writings of the prophets are read (e.g., the Liturgy of the Word), as long as time permits; then, when the reader has ceased, the [priest] verbally instructs, and exhorts to the imitation of these good things. Then we all rise together and pray (e.g., the Prayers of the Faithful), and, as we before said, when our prayer is ended, bread and wine and water are

brought (e.g., offertory procession), and the [priest] in like manner offers prayers and thanksgivings, according to his ability (a standardized form of the Mass had not yet been developed fully), and the people assent, saying “Amen” (e.g., the Great Amen we say or sing at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer); and there is a distribution to each, and a participation of that over which thanks have been given, and to those who are absent a portion is sent by the deacons. And they who are well to do, and willing, give what each thinks fit (e.g., taking up a collection); and what is collected is deposited with the priest, who assists the orphans and widows and those who, through sickness or any other cause, are in want, and those who are in bonds and the strangers sojourning among us, and in a word takes care of all who are in need. But Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly (This shows the understanding, from the earliest days of the Church, of the obligation we have every week to “Keep the Lord’s Day holy by participating in Mass), because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Savior on the same day rose from the dead. For He was crucified on the day before that of Saturn (Saturday); and on the day after that of Saturn, which is the day of the Sun, having appeared to His apostles and disciples, He taught them these things, which we have submitted to you also for your consideration.

PRAYER OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION. My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there, and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
