December 6, 2015 - Second Sunday of Advent

Tuesday, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, begins the Extra-ordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. Pope Francis will open the Jubilee Doors at St. Peter Basilica in Rome. He will symbolically invite everyone to enter these doors of mercy. “I am convinced that the whole church – that has much need to receive mercy because we are sinners – will find in this jubilee the joy to rediscover and render fruitful the mercy of God, with which we are all called to give consolation to every man and woman of our time,” said Pope Francis.

I invite you to pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy throughout this Jubilee Year of Mercy. It was given by Jesus to St. Faustina and has grown in popularity as Jesus’ message through her has spread most especially through the devotion of St. John Paul II while he was pope. Below is an easy explanation on how to pray the Chaplet.

Please join us for Mass this Tuesday at 9:00 a.m., Noon and 5:30 p.m. Downtown.

In Christ, I love you,

pastor’s notebook

Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, su£ered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into Hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting.

Amen.

9:30AM 11:30AM

This week we begin the Jubilee Year of Mercy called by Pope Francis. Donna Schaper in her article, “The Ways of Mercy” says that mercy is a powerful feeling that moves our hearts. Personal experiences can lead us to a mutual exchange of forgiveness and build up our community. She suggests a number of practices that we will put forth in the coming weeks to help us each celebrate mercy. Her first suggestion is to read the pope’s invitation to the Holy Year. You can find the full text of his letter, Misericordiae Vultus (“The Face of Mercy”) via a link from our website. She suggests giving yourself a mercy break and reading a paragraph a day so that you might digest it. Read it, let it sink in, and then let it become part of your life.

Check out the new ADVENT button on our parish app! These daily reflections along with the Mass readings in the READINGS button are a great way to prepare our lives for the coming of Our Lord.

The holidays are just around the corner - and with the holidays come cards - and on the envelopes are stamps! After you read and enjoy them, what do you do with them?

Send the stamps to Sister Jane Chantal, CSC, Manager of the Stamp Room! Sisters of the Holy Cross use the money raised from the stamps to benefit their Ministry With the Poor. Stamps should be trimmed with a 1/4” to 1/2” border - do not try to remove them from the envelope!

Send the card fronts (with no handwritten notes) to the children at St Jude’s Ranch for Children. They cut and paste and use the cards to create new cards which are then sold. All card fronts are needed - Birthdays, Valentines, Thanksgiving, Anniversary, Get Well, and - of course - Christmas!

A small crèche has been prepared in the St. Joseph Chapel for Advent and Christmas. Request prayer for a special intention by writing on a slip of paper. Pray for another person by removing a slip of paper from the crèche and praying with that intention throughout your adoration hour.

Blessing your Advent Wreath:

All make the sign of the cross as the leader says: “Our help is in the name of the Lord.”

Response (R/.) “Who made heaven and earth.”

Scripture, Isaiah 9: (lines 1-2 and 5-6) or Isaiah 63 (lines 16-17 & 19) or Isaiah 64 (lines 2-7) is read:

Reader: “The Word of the Lord.”

R/. “Thanks be to God.”

With hands joined, the leader says:

Lord our God, we praise you for your Son, Jesus Christ:He is Emmanuel, the hope of the peoples,He is the wisdom that teaches and guides us,He is the Savior of every nation.

Lord God,let your blessing come upon us as we light the candles of this wreath. May the wreath and its light be a sign of Christ’s promise to bring us salvation.

May he come quickly and not delay. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

R/. “Amen.”

The blessing may conclude with a verse from “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel”:

O come, desire of nations, bindin one the hearts of humankind;bid ev’ry sad division ceaseand be thyself our Prince of peace.Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuelshall come to thee, O Israel.

SVDP Christmas Dinner Voucher Program: December 9 & 10

Many of our neighbors don’t know what they’ll eat for Christ-mas and don’t know if they can even a£ord much of a dinner. The St. Vincent de Paul Society will help with their annual Christmas Voucher Program, which gives food vouchers to people in Thurston and Mason Counties. They expect to need $30,000 or more, as they did last year.

If you know anyone who may benefit from the program, please refer them to the Gathering Space on Dec. 9 or 10, 10AM-2PM.

Please be extra generous with the SVDP collection next week to help fund this important program.

Community Kitchen Needs Help Feeding the Hungry

“For I was hungry and you gave me food . . . ‘Amen, I say to you, what-ever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’” -- Matthew 25:35-40

The Community Kitchen is run by Catholic Community Services and o£ers lunch and dinner to the homeless and hungry populations in the Olympia area every day of the year. One team sponsored by St. Michael Parish needs some more help. This team provides dinner on the 1st Thursday of the month. The new team member will be asked to do the grocery shopping for the meal, then help prepare and serve the meal. Training and assistance will be provided.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception - Tuesday, December 8

“Hail Mary, full of grace”. For thousands of years, millions of times per day the Virgin Mary is greeted by the faithful with the greeting of the Archan-gel that we hear resonating anew in the Gospel. The sons and daughters of the Church learn from the words of the Archangel Gabriel that the full-ness of the mystery of God’s grace was realized in Holy Mary. St. Paul the Apostle teaches us that the Father made all fullness dwell in His Incarnate Son (c.f. Col 1:12-20), which overflows from Christ’s head and spills out on His Mystical Body that is the Church. Before descending in Body, Christ’s fullness was spread in a unique and unrepeatable way on Mary, predestined from eternity to be the Mother of God. Find out more:

Jubilee Year of Mercy

The Holy Father said the Jubilee is “...dedicated to living out in our daily lives the mercy which God constantly extends to all of us.” Pope Francis, has called each of us to focus on asking God for his mercy through the sacrament of Reconciliation and sharing God’s mercy with those in need.
