ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Our wonderful clients were renovating their retirement home
for beauty and relaxation purposes. They’ve spent most of
their lives living and working in various countries around the
world. They wanted to create a special place to call home. The
original house had a flat roof with matching car-port. The
entire roof system was removed and the house was decon-
structed down to bare studs. We completely redesigned the
house, added on a garage, and changed the roof lines. This
gave them vaulted ceilings with an open concept layout im-
proving not only the value of this home but ultimately devising
the perfect slice of heaven by the water’s edge.
ABOUT THE BUILDER:
John has been in business here locally for 25-plus years, win-
ning over 50 local/state remodeling in excellence awards. In
2013, he was recognized in Remodeling Magazines “Big50.” This
is a national award and is considered the remodeling industry’s
“Hall of Fame.” What’s his secret to success? His answer has
always stemmed from a lesson learned from his mother. “Sur-
round yourself with smart people, it will rub off.” Later in life
that translated into “surround yourself with professionals.”
That’s what John has followed and that’s the fundamental
reason why John Erwin Remodeling, Inc. is “Olympia’s Premier
Award Winning Contractor!”

Business Bureau will haveinformation on businesscomplaints and licensing.
A Thoroughly inter-view each contractor.Have they completed aproject similar in size andscope? Are they insured? Will they secure the neces-sary permits to completethe job? Do not end theinterview without askingfor several references youcan contact.
COMMUNICATION ANDCONTRACTS
A Only contracts needto be signed not esti-mates. Do not sign anestimate, it may be a bind-
ing contract.A You must have a
contract. A professionalwill provide a contract thatclearly outlines the type ofjob, process and costs. Donot work with a contractorthat accepts only verbalagreements about the jobyou need completed.
A Communicationwith a qualified profes-sional once the contractis signed should not endthere. Connect with yourcontractor regularly, espe-cially if it is a big project. It’s easier to troubleshotissues with your project ifyou identify and discussthem immediately.
PRICING ANDPAYMENTS
If you receive a “specialpricing” offer or a signif-icantly lower price thanother contractors, it is ared flag. Also, if your con-tractor can start right away– in other words, not thatbusy – is another tellingsign to hire someone else.
A Many professionalcontractors will ask for
a deposit towards mate-rials. This type of depositshould be paid once acontract is signed by bothyou and the contractor.Illegitimate contractorswill ask for cash or fullpayment before startingthe job. Don’t do it.
A Know exactly whatyou are paying for. Askcontractors you are in-terviewing to provide a
complete breakdown ofcosts. Look for materials, labor, profit margins andother expenses.
A Only make the finalpayment once you aresatisfied with the workand have copies of thematerial receipts and
lien releases from thecontractor and sub-contractor.

Eating a good meal, taking a nap orplaying outdoorsare just a few of
the simple pleasures in lifethat most pets and hu-mans both appreciate. There are several waysyou can show your pethow much they mean toyou by incorporating cer-tain design elements intoyour home. Many featureswill not only cater to yourpet’s lifestyle, but theyalso can enhance yourhome’s appearance andadd to its value.
Whether you’re lookingto buy a new home, re-model your existing homeor just need some inspira-tion for how to use yourcurrent space, here are a
few ideas to get started.
IMPROVING COMFORT
AND CONVENIENCE
Designing areas withinyour home where your petcan eat, sleep and bathetells them that they arejust as much a member ofthe family as everyoneelse. And having thesededicated locations canalso help reduce theamount of time you spendcleaning up after your pet.
A Built-in eating areasare among the most pop-ular designs concepts forhomeowners with pets.Beneath the kitchen coun-ter, under an island orwithin a pull-out drawerare all great options tohelp save space and mini-
mize spills.A Custom nooks pro-
vide your pet with a quietretreat to nap or play.Look for opportunities toincorporate these nooksbeneath bay windows, orconvert a cluttered crawlspace beneath stairs intoyour pet’s private refuge.
A Pet-washing stationsin laundry/mud rooms cansignificantly improve thecleanliness of your home.An enclosed tiled areawith an extended faucetcan be used to give yourpet a full bath or simply toclean paws after a romp inthe outdoors.
SELECTING THE RIGHT
FLOORING
With the appropriate
flooring, both you andyour pet can live amicablywithout pointing fingers(or paws) at one anotherwhenever a new scratch ora spill is discovered. Floor-ing options today areseemingly endless, andeach type comes withvarying levels of dura-bility, so you’ll want to doyour research as well asconsult with a professionalbefore making the in-vestment.
A Bamboo flooring isbecoming increasinglypopular, especially amongpet owners, for its hard-ness and resistance tostains. And for those whoare trying to be green, both bamboo and corkflooring are also good forthe environment.
A Hardwood floorshave long been among themost desirable options,
though many differenttypes of wood and finishesare highly prone to show-ing wear over time.
A Laminate, stone andtile floors might not beyour best option if yourpet’s comfort is a top pri-ority. While they are muchmore durable and typicallyresist scratches better than
other flooring, some petswill find them to be un-comfortably hard andexceedingly slippery.
To find a home builder, remodeler or designer thatcan help you make thebest home design choicesfor your pets, visit omb.orgfor the Hire-A-Pro onlinesearchable directory!

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
A modern farmhouse look was the inspiration for thisproject. The main goal was to join the detached ga-rage with the home, have a designated laundry room, create a master suite with its own bath and enlargethe outdoor living space. So they added a 16-foot-by-23-foot master bedroom/bath addition, rear-ranged the interior walls to enlarge the kitchen andadded all-new windows and seven skylights. By en-closing the breezeway, they gained a hall bath andmudroom. The new composite deck with radiantheaters, built-in barbecue and hot tub turn this1,700-square-foot home into a larger place to gather.

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Oyster Bay Construction (OBC) and Interior Dimensionsteamed up to remodel the interior and exterior of this1950s mid-century two-story home. The clients dreamedof living on the water and when the opportunity arose tolive on Budd Inlet they couldn’t resist. Unfortunately, alarge two-story double-sided fireplace separated thekitchen and living spaces disrupting the stunning water-front view. Removing the fireplace gave the homeownersa more functioning open concept floor plan. The pre-served exposed cedar beams, T&G ceiling and modernfurnishings helped to add character while complementingthe mid-century architecture.
ABOUT THE BUILDER:
Interior Dimensions works with clients to discover theirpersonal style through designs, 3-D visual plan tours andguided product selections for their home. This awardwinning company has over 37 years’ experience in thedesign industry. Oyster Bay Construction (OBC) is a full-service construc-tion company. They specialize in custom home construc-tion, remodels and award-winning kitchen transforma-tions for over 20 years.

Inviting, accommodat-ing and a feast for theeyes — wet rooms areshowing up in more
and more homes andwowing visitors at new-home showcases.
Wet rooms — essentiallyopen-concept or barrier-free bathrooms — are tiledcontinuously from floor to
ceiling and across the floorsurface, giving a sleek, unified appearance.
The shower is open tothe room or enclosed inclear glass, and has noraised threshold to stepover. Sinks, countertopsand vanities mounted tothe walls hover above theunbroken plane of the
floor.The wet room’s unin-
terrupted sight lines give afeeling of space to even arelatively small room. Thecontinuous floor surfacemakes for easy cleanupand allows people inwheelchairs or with re-

stricted mobility to movefreely.
Here are a few things toconsider when designingyour wet room:
EXPRESS YOURSELF
The open spaces andabundance of tile thatdefine a wet room inviteyou to splash on your owncreative look.
Whether you choosesoothing earth tones andtextures, cool minimalistgrays, whites and blacks,or whimsical colors andpatterns, the wet roomcreates an eye-catchingdisplay.
CURBLESS SHOWER
Because the entire roomis waterproof, your curb-less shower also can becompletely open to theroom, with no enclosure atall.
Just be sure there’senough space to place thetoilet and sink where theywon’t get splashed byspray from the shower.
Glass enclosures withseamless glass doors areanother popular option. They’ll contain water onall sides without impedingthe view.
Or sometimes simply aslab partition between theshower and the toilet willdo the trick, leaving thefront of the shower opento the rest of the room. The slab may be a foot ortwo short of the ceilingand face the doorway tominimize its effect on thevisual flow.
Threshold drains — orgrates that are flush withthe tile floor — may definethe edge of the showerarea without interruptingthe floor’s flow. Somedrains even glow fromwithin, using interior col-ored or white LED lightingfor an extra flair and to
help orient a person underthe shower’s spray.
Another popular optionis adding a place to sit inthe shower. A built-in slateledge, matching or con-trasting with the wall tile,a wall-mounted drop-down bench in bamboo ora free-standing teak stoolis a handy feature foranyone and contributes tothe overall design.
FIXTURES
Floating vanities, at-tached to the wall withoutlegs, and floating counter-tops look great with to-
day’s vessel sinks andminimalist faucets.
In addition to their sleeklook, these features alsoprovide sink access foranyone in a wheel chair.Drawers or shelves at-tached underneath or oneach side of the sink pro-vide storage.
PROFESSIONAL
INSTALLATION
To be sure your wetroom keeps the waterwhere it’s supposed to be,it’s important that every-thing be installed justright, and that might re-
quire a professional.Floor grading is key —
constructed to slope gentlyand almost imperceptibly, but effectively, towarddrains. Tile must be prop-erly installed and sealed toprevent leaks.
Once it’s done right, your wet room will be easyto use, to clean and toenjoy — a lovely oasis inyour home.
