Excitement around theworld has reached a feverpitch as the London 2012Olympic Games will offi-cially open with a grandceremony on July 27 fromLondon’sOlympicStadium. The

Games ofthe 30thOlympiadwill run fromFriday, July 27,to Sunday, Aug.12, and NBC willcarry every eventlive online or tape-delayed in prime time. That’s great news for

audiences in the U.S.,who will now be able tofollow their country’s suc-cesses with unprece-dented exposure.Past Olympic cover-

age has focused on high-lighting top events toair in evening time-slots, and while NBCwill continue that tradi-tion, it will also offerabundant coverage viaonline streaming video.Fans will be given

ample opportunity to fol-low what promises to beone of the best Americancontingents to compete ata Summer Games.Team U.S.A. has wonthe medal count inevery Summer Olympicssince 1992 and this yearyou can expect thatstreak to continue. After collecting eight

gold medals in eightevents at the 2008 Bei-jing Games, MichaelPhelps will again be hit-ting the pool to representthe Stars and Stripes. While it’s unlikely thatPhelps will duplicate his2008 success, there is onerecord that he’ll surely bethinking about in hispreparation for theseGames. Phelps heads toLondon needing justthree medals to surpassSoviet gymnast LarisaLatynina (18 medals) asthe most decoratedOlympic athlete ever.Should he accomplish thefeat, Phelps, at the tenderage of 27, would cementhis legacy as history’sgreatest Olympian. While Phelps is at the

top of the list of American

athletes to watch, thereare many more notableAmericans to keep an eyeon at the Aquatics Cen-tre. RyanLochte is athree-time

gold medalist and couldbe Phelps’ top competitorin the pool. With Lochteand Phelps leading theway, it could be a battlefor bronze for the rest ofthe field.Other notable Ameri-

can athletes expected tomake some noise areMissy Franklin (swim-ming), Allyson Felix(track and field), JordynWieber (gymnastics) andRau’shee Warren (box-ing).Another exuberant ath-

lete who caught theworld’s attention in Bei-jing comes to London todefend his title of fastestman in the world. Ja-maican sprinter UsainBolt took the world bystorm in 2008, shatteringthe 100-metre worldrecord while also pickingup gold medals in the200-metre and 4x100-metre relay. Bolt’s flair

and enthusiasm endearedhim to fans around theworld and many expecthim to continue where heleft off in Beijing. For Great Britain, there will be a con-siderable amount ofpressure to pleasethe home crowds. In Beijing, theU.K. tallied 19gold medals and47 in total, enough for fourthplace in both cate-gories. It’s safe to say

that the host nation ex-pects to improve on thosenumbers and will striveto finish in the topthree, most likely be-hind Team U.S.A.and China.

The face ofthe gamesfor thehostnationwill becom-

posed of anumber ofBritish athletes

who will begunning forhometown

glory. Scottish trackcyclist Chris Hoy will bea Briton to watch duringthe Games. The man theycall “The Real McHoy”

took home threegold medalsfrom Beijing —

the first Briton toaccomplish the feat in acentury — and is poisedto hit the podium againin London.English swimmer Re-

becca Adlington was adouble gold medalist in2008 and is a rising starback home in England. Her 800-metre swim inBeijing broke the event’slongest-standing record, one that had been in thebooks for 19 years.Adlington has recentlydeveloped a friendly ri-valry with Italy’s Feder-ica Pellegrini, who is adominant force in theseevents, so you can expectsome heated showdownsbetween these two power-houses.Team U.S.A.’s domina-

tion on the basketballcourt will likely continueas Kobe Bryant and Le-Bron James will lead oneof the best Americansquads into an Olympics

since the original DreamTeam in 1992. As good asthey’ll be, the U.S. willface stiff competitionfrom Spain, Argentinaand Italy. Meanwhile, thewomen’s team, led by SueBird and Diana Taurasi, will be looking to recordits fifth consecutiveOlympic gold medal.Another team sport

that garners plenty of at-tention is soccer. TheAmerican women — theNo. 1-ranked team in theworld — will be playing

with a chipon their

shouldersafter los-ing in the2011 FIFAWorld Cupfinal to Japan.Meanwhile, themen will belooking to re-gain someinterna-tional re-spect afterbeing elimi-nated in thefirst round at Beijing. It’s been a long road for

London 2012 organizerssince being selectedOlympic host in July2005. These Games markthe first time that a citywill stage the Olympics

for a third time — Athensand Paris are the onlyother cities to host twice.London first hosted in

1908, just 12 years afterthe first modernOlympics. It hosted againin 1948, as London repre

sentedtheOlympics’restorationafter a 12-year hiatusdue to WorldWar II. Nowthe city istasked withfollow-ing the

grandiose BeijingGames, which operatedon a gargantuanbudget. London’s ad-vantage is in its blend

of historic venues withmodern settings and lo-cales.Soccer will be played

at storied Wembley Sta-dium, tennis at Wimble-don’s All England Cluband beach volleyball at

the historic HorseGuards Pa-rade — thepoliticalcentre ofthe UK.The Games’

closing cere-mony will takeplace Aug. 12, atOlympic Park. A

momentous compo-nent of the ceremony isthe

marchof the ath-

letes, when the athleteswalk out together, ab-sent of national group-ing. This traditionbegan during the Mel-bourne 1956 OlympicGames and is a sym-bolic way to bring theathletes of the world to-gether.The ceremony will

conclude with theOlympic Torch han-dover to the next hostcity: Rio de Janeiro,Brazil.
