The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games are mere months away. The count down has begun, the torch has been lit and the runners are running. As an investigative journalist you have been asked by a sponsor to create a newspaper highlighting the events surrounding the Olympic games. Lucky for you other newspapers have already begun reporting on it. Your sponsor want s you to look at international newspapers to find out what other countries are saying about the Games. This might be the most controversial Olympics in recent years, use your skills as an investigative journalist to find out what issues are affecting the Games.

This might be the most controversial Olympics in recent years, use your skills as an investigative journalist to find out what issues are affecting the Games. All eyes will be on China as the torch draws ever closer to its shores. Using international newspapers websites listed below find out what people around the world are saying.

Step 1: Research your Story 1.From the links on the Task page pick a website to start on.2.In the search bar on the website type in 2008 Olympic Games, Olympics environment, or Olympics Tibet to pull up articles relating to the Olympics.3.Look at 3 or more articles on each website .
• Keep in mind your newspaper will need to have one article on the Tibet issue and one on how Environment is impacting the games.
4.Take notes in a journal as you go so that you’ll be able to write your articles.5.Look at 5 or more Newspapers, try to get a broad perspective so that you’ll have a balanced view.

Step 3: Creating Your Newspaper1. Create a Microsoft Publisher Newsletter.
1. Open Microsoft Publisher2. Click on Newsletters 3. Select a template4. Click Create on the bottom right hand corner 5. Create a title for your Newspaper6. Make sure your name is on it7. Put the date some where8. Copy and paste your articles into the newspaper
• To fit all your articles your newspaper will be 2 pages 9. Templates normally have 4 pages, delete the pages you do not use

This Webquest was created as part of a technology class at Colorado State University. The purpose of the class is to help future teachers become more familiar with using technology in the classroom. The idea for this particular webquest was inspired by Mrs. Keough’s 8 th/9th grade Current Events class at Lesher Junior high in Fort Collins, Colorado. Mrs. Keough’s class has been learning about events around the world in an attempt to understand events that are affecting the world they live in.

1. Read introduction with the class. 1. Ask Students what they know about the Olympics
already.2. If you have a projector set up, walk though the first website
with students. Point out where they might find search boxes. 1. Type in the first prompt; 2008 Beijing Olympic Games2. Look over the results with them, point out articles that
might be helpful. 3. Make sure students know they need to look at more than 5
websites and 3 articles on each site. 4. Remind Students to be taking notes and write down articles that
they look at that are helpful. 5. Have students write articles in Microsoft Word first so they can
copy and paste. 1. Cleary explain what they need in each article.
6. Show students how to get to the Flicker website so that they can find photos.
7. Walk them through the steps of creating the Newspaper. You can either do this at the beginning of the lesson or if you gave them a limited time for research, introduce it when you transition.
1. Make sure they know how to delete the extra pages so they don’t print to many.
8. Go over the rubric with students with at beginning of lesson. Also set clear standards for behavior on the computers.

This lesson will help students see different perspectives on a large issue. It will help them understand the controversy surrounding the 2008 Olympic games and the different perspectives around the world about it. The lesson also assists students in finding international sources online and hopefully encourage them to use these sources in the future. Writing the newspaper will help students learn how to syntheses information and improve their writing skills.
