Every year, in recognition of National Volunteer Week (April 12-18), we publish a “Report to the Community” to highlight not only what HII contributes as a corporate citizen, but, more importantly, to feature our employees who support a wide variety of organizations, causes and activities.

HII and its shipbuilding divisions have a long history of charitable work in Virginia, Mississippi and other states across the country where HII employees live and work. With our recent acquisitions of The S.M. Stoller Corp. in Colorado, UniversalPegasus International in Texas and The Columbia Group’s Engineering Solutions Division in Florida, we now have about 38,000 employees working in 30 states, plus Washington, D.C., and in multiple countries around the world.

I’m grateful to note that so many of these employees invest not only their money but also their time and talent into their communities. In addition to company-sponsored events like the United Way campaign, regional food drives and American Red Cross blood drives, it’s heartening to know that the men and women of HII are involved in so many activities that help those less fortunate and make the places where we do business places where people want to live.

In 2014, HII employees pledged more than $2.5 million to the United Way, which

supports a wide range of charitable agencies across the country. Our divisions

and subsidiaries also have longstanding relationships with organizations like

the American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity and Special Olympics, and

hundreds of our employees give their time, talent and money in support of many

other organizations—large and small—that strengthen their communities.

Environment

HII is committed to maintaining an environmentally responsible operation and complying with all federal, state

and local environmental laws and regulations everywhere we do business. Our divisions and subsidiaries also

support annual clean-up events in Virginia, Mississippi and California, and many employees volunteer their own

time and energy to preserving our greatest natural resource—our environment—for future generations.

“ My wife and I have worked with the Virginia Aquarium for the past several years. We plant various sea grasses and install ‘catch fences’ to help build, stabilize and maintain the sand dunes at Fort Story and Dam Neck. We just feel that we are giving a little back to the Earth for all the good she gives to us. HII employees truly embody the spirit of the holidays and

the adage that “it’s better to give than receive.” Every

year, our shipbuilding divisions host annual food drives in

Virginia and Mississippi, and employees in our corporate

office buy Christmas gifts for families served by the City

of Newport News’ Department of Human Services—not

to mention all the departmental and individual efforts

to brighten the holidays for those less fortunate.
