    V OPTIC L SYSTEMThe optical system of the Series BH is divided into five sections: Objectives, ObservationTubes, Eyepieces, Illuminat ing System and Photomicrographic Equipment, The followingsection deals with objectives, eyepieces and i lluminating system.

    1 ObjectivesA. Types

    Two types of Olympus objectives are mentioned below, in accordance with their opticalperformance and corrections of various aberrations.

    Achromats:Corrected for chromatic aberration, and most popular for general use.Plan achromats:Capable of producing a flat image to the edge of the field. Recommended for visualobservation of a large field and photomicrography o f flat objects.

    B How to UseImmersion objectives (engrave HI for homogeneous immersion):To uti lize the full numerical aperture of an immersion objective, the objective and speci-men are immersed in an Olympus immersion oil, provided. Care should be taken toprevent oi l bubbles from forming in the oi l f i lm between specimen and objective.After use, carefully wipe off the immersion oil deposited on the top lens surface of theobjective wi th gauze moistened with xylene. Take care not to immerse objectives otherthan immersion objectives.Special objectives:

    Long working distance objectives:Provide a longer working distance than standard objectives of equal power.Differential interference contrast objectives:These strain-free objectives of high N.A. can be used not only for the differentialinterference contrast method, but also fo r brightfield.

    2. EyepiecesThe eyepieces available with the Series BH are computed to correct slight residual errorsleft uncorrected in the objectives and designed to further magnify the primary image fromthe objective, l imit ing the field as viewed by the eye.

    Widefield eyepiece WF):Color corrected and f lat , w~de ield; high eyepoint, convenient for observers wearingeyeglasses.Compensating eyepiece K):Corrected for chromatic aberration and astigmatism. For use with high power objectives.Photo eyepiece { F K :For photomicrographic use. Fully corrected for field flatness in combination w ith allOlympus objectives.The eyepieces mentioned above can be used with drop-in eyepiece micrometer discs.

    3 Vertical Illuminator

    The reflected illumination system adopted in the Model HM is based on the Koehlerprinciple wi th features as follows:

    Aperture iris diaphragm and field iris diaphragm operate effectivelyThe light source illuminates the ful l numerical aperture of the objective.

    The entire field of view can be evenly illuminated.The illuminator is provided with a high/low magnification selector lever to exactlymatch illumination with objective magnification n use.Optimum light intensity can be easily obtained.

    A. Aperture lris DiaphragmIn order to achieve optimum objective performance, the opening of the aperture irisdiaphragm should be matched to the numerical aperture of the objective in use. I t is oftenpreferable, however, to stop down the aperture diaphragm slightly more than indicated bythe objective N.A. This will result in better image contrast, increased depth of focus and aflatter field. After completing focus adjustment, remove one of the eyepieces from theobservation tube and look into the empty eyepiece tube. As you stop down the apertureiris diaphragm, the image of the iris diaphragm can be seen in the objective pupil. Adjust theopening of the diaphragm to match the N.A. of the objective in use. If the specimen is lowin contrast, it IS recommended to stop down to 70-80 of the objective N.A.

    The field iris diaphragm controls the diameter o f the ray bundle impinging on the specimensurface and thus increases image definition and reduces glare. For microscopic observation,it is necessary to stop down the field iris diaphragm until the diaphragm s just outside thefield of view as you look through the eyepiece. For photomicrography, the field irisdiaphragm must be stopped down in accordance with the field as viewed through the fieldof view eyepiece, focusing telescope, etc, in use.

    VI LIGHT SOLIRCEThe standard light source incorporates a 15W pre-centered tungsten filament bulb (LS15),combined with a socket for positive contact, eliminating the problems of defective contactand over-heating.When used at the rated voltage 6V, the average life of the tungsten bulb LS15 is longer than200 hours. This is, however, greatly reduced, if the bulb is used at higher voltage; forinstance, the bulb life is reduced to 1/50 a t 8V. Therefore, i t is advisable to avoid prolongeduse at readings over 6V (i n the red zone).If high intensity illumination is required, ~ is recommended to use the optional hidhintensity halogen illuminator,Do not switch the tungsten bulb on at high intensity. I t reduces bulb life.

    OBSERV TION TUBElnterpupillary Distance and Diopter Adjustments1 ) Hold the knurled dovetail slides @ of the right and left

    eyepiece tubes with both hands and push the tubestogether, or pull them apart laterally, whichever isrequired, while looking through the eyepieces with botheyes, until perfect binccular vision is obtained.

    2) Memorize your interpupillary distance setting. Scale @Jis provided for this purpose. Fig. 5

    3 Rotate the tube length adjustment ring @ on the right eyepiece tube to match yourinterpupillary distance setting which you obtained from the scale. (Fig. 5

    4 Look at the image through the right eyepiece wi th your right eye and focus on the speci-men with the fine adjustment knobs.

    5 Next, look at the image through the left eyepiece with your left eye and rotate the tubelength adjustment ring @ to focus on the specimen without using the coarse and fineadjustment knobs.* The mechanical tube length of the Olympus metallurgical microscope is standardizedat 200mm.
