Dear Supporters, We are pleased to share Oakland Museum of California’s audited financials for the fiscal year July 1, 2014 -June 30, 2015, and to gratefully acknowledge the many individuals and institutions that contributed to the Museum. Through your investment, coupled with the sound financial management of the Board and staff, the Museum has achieved ten consecutive years of modest, but important operating surpluses.

During 2014-2015, OMCA engaged in many collaborations and partnerships in order to achieve our mission: “to inspire all Californians to create a more vibrant future for themselves and their communities.” The Museum welcomed 170,746 visitors into the galleries, and school programs and tours served 35,218 students and educators. Our popular weekly event Friday Nights @ OMCA attracted over 15,000 new and repeat visitors each month and our community engagement program OMCA Connect reached over 85,000 audience members at neighborhood festivals and events.

OMCA joined with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to organize the exhibition Fertile Ground: Art and Community in California. Together, the collections of our two museums underscored the notion that artists in California changed the face of modern and contemporary art across generations.

Songs and Sorrows: Días de los Muertos 20th Anniversary, continued the Museum’s long tradition of providing time and space for personal reflection within the context of Meso-American themes as well as a chance for collective remembrance through the annual community celebration.

Visitors to our Gallery of California Natural Sciences explored Bees: Tiny Insect, Big Impact, an interactive exhibit demonstrating the insect’s value to California’s ecosystems and the simple actions all citizens can take to help bees survive in a changing world.

We looked at themes of art, healing, community health, and identity through the participatory mural installation Reflections of Healing, and in the exhibition Who is Oakland?, both co-created with Oakland-based artists and community members.

As the region celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, our exhibition Pacific Worlds, and related programming, wove together never-before-seen objects from our collections along with contemporary California Pacific Islander art and community voices.

In the spring we introduced Books & Blankets, inviting families to check out a tote bag for a relaxing read during their visit, and created Family Guides to help parents and guardians design their own tour of the

Museum customized to the needs, interests, and ages of their children.

With an eye toward future programming, we proudly announced the creation of the Bruce Beasley Sculpture Center, which will be possible through a promised gift from this internationally-regarded, West Oakland-based artist.

Throughout this year of exciting activity, we have been guided by the belief that museums should be a place for everyone and that everyone should have access to inspiration, learning, and creativity. When museums are truly welcoming and inclusive, they make a real difference in the lives of people as well as in the health and vitality of a community.

OMCA is fortunate to have many allies and advocates helping us to achieve our vision, including our deeply committed local leaders and the City of Oakland. We applaud the energy and passion of our fellow Board members and offer special thanks to our immediate past Chair Mike Moye, who led OMCA through the critical strategic planning process that has set our Museum on a bold path for the future.
