AwArds Ceremony Brings exCiting Close
to AmAzing 2010 world FinAlsby Brendan Dwyer
After months of practice and many milesof travel, the 2010 Odyssey of the MindWorld Finals came to a dramatic nish at the
Awards Ceremony held at the Breslin Stu-
dent Events Center Saturday night.
Despite a week of steamy temperatures,
the crowd had plenty of energy and excite-
ment the place was literally buzzing and
alive with lights. Program Director Sammy
Micklus took the stage in order to begin the
evenings events. This was not just the bestWorld Finals ever, it was the best event ever,
declared Micklus to the capacity crowd that
roared its approval. Id like to thank every-
one here for an amazing time, especially the
over 430 volunteer ofcials we couldnt do
all this without you.
The rst award of the evening was the Odys-
sey of the Mind Spirit Award, which went to
OotM 30-year veteran, Todd Hoss McNutt.
In his time with OotM, McNutt has coached
over 60 teams to achieve their goals through
creative thinking. McNutt took the opportu-
nity to unveil a new program called OdysseyAngels. In this program, Odyssey teams nd
a person or group in their neighborhood that
needs help. Once they identify the problem,
they will be using their team work and cre-
ativity skills to try to make everyday life better
for that individual.
Another award for the evening was the
Creativity Festivals Most Creative Booths,
awarded to New York state and California.
The entire crowd simply boomed with ap-
proval as, in true OotM form, each group is
as happy for their fellow participants victo-
ries as they would be for their own.
OMER's Awards were then presented to
teams and individuals who demonstrate out-
standing sportsmanship, exemplary behav-
ior, and exceptional talent throughout World
Finals. One of the nights winners was a
compassionate team from Savannah Geor-
gia who found a part for another teams prop
and hustled across campus to return it just in
time for its presentation.
The sentiment for the entire nights events
was best summed up by Odyssey of the
Mind founder Dr. Sam Micklus. All of youhere tonight have brought tremendous pride
to your homelands. What a fantastic event,
said Dr. Sam, At the close of these World
Finals I have one more question for you all
who thinks this was the best World Finals
ever? At this question the noise inside the
Breslin Center was deafening. Everyone in
attendance truly enjoyed their time in East
Lansing and while the 2010 World Finals
came to a close the memories made here
will last a lifetime.

tHAnks From CCi
Creative Competions, Inc. would
like to congratulate all the teams
that have traveled to Michigan to
compete in World Finals. Youve
worked extremely hard all year
all for just eight minutes. We hope
that you feel proud of yourselves
no matter what place your team
nished. As you know every teamthat solves an OotM problem is a
winner.
We hope youve had fun over the
past few days by making new
friends from all around the world.
The Odyssey of the Mind family
continues to grow with each new
team. Of course none of this would
be possible without our dedicated
volunteers and parents. All of your
hard work over the past year did
not go without notice. You are
preparing generations of creativeproblem-solvers to be the best
that they can be!
Another member of the Odyssey
extended family is NASA and
it did not disappoint this year
with its fantastic Earth Tent
and ever-fascinating E-Theater
presentations. We also hope
to continue to work with micro-
sculptor Willard Wigan so he can
inspire more students with his
ideas and his art.
Its been another successful WorldFinals, with thanks to Michigan
State University. East Lansing is a
great place for this huge event.
Best wishes to everyone and
heres hoping you have another
year lled with creativity!

While rushing to catch a shuttle to
weigh-in, a team dropped part of
its structure. This team saw it fall
and rushed to catch the shuttle, but
just missed it. Knowing the pieces
importance, they ran to ColumnStructures site and returned it in
time even though it was for a
competing team. This showed true
Odyssey of the Mind spirit by goingthe extra mile and helping fellow
competitors.

France this team and its parentsassisted above and beyond the
call of duty. It took its buddy team

from others to help the buddy team
that was also a competitor. Thisteam and its parents donated time,
money, and resources to assist
