Thanks to the hard work of Dr.

and leadership of Bethany Fralish,
President, of the Omicron
Lambda Chapter of the national
education honor society, Kappa Delta Pi, the chapter received
one of the 2016-2017 Kappa Delta Pi Awards for Education
Excellence. Omicron Chapter was selected from a large
number of chapters who qualified for consideration for the
award.
Laura K. Perkins, Director of Membership & Chapter Services
made the announcement, “I am pleased to let you know that
the Omicron Lambda Chapter has been selected as honored
recipients of the 2016-2017 Phoenix Award for Chapter
Improvement presented by Kappa Delta Pi, International

ACE Partnership Begins to Take Shape Dr. Lee-Anne Spalding represented CEDHP at a
meeting regarding our community partnership
with ACE, the Academic Center for Excellence
downtown. The topics of discussion were as
follows:
1. Read for the Record 2017: field trip on October
19, 2017 for Pre-K and K students from ACE will
travel to the UCF Education gym for a morning of
literacy related activities and lunch. (Spalding/

2. Read Across America- UCF: teacher candidates
go to ACE on March 2, 2018 and read aloud Dr.
Seuss books to K, 1, and 2 classrooms during
literacy block. Teachers will receive books and/or
chapter, and we greatly appreciate your leadership
and dedication.”

3. Little Free Library: Our hope is to have built a
Little Free Library to paint and stock with free
books! A little free library which we would then
dedicate on March 2, 2018 when there for the Read
Across America event. https://littlefreelibrary.org/.
4. Finally, through KnightED Talks, we hope to
perform with ACE assistance a tour of ACE and in
the future professional development workshops on
the ACE school site to educate teacher candidates
about community partnership schools including the
rewards and challenges faced when teaching in
urban environments. Being that the school is just
opening, we’d like to plan the TOUR PD session for
February 2018, looking forward to year two where
we could host one in the fall and one in the spring at
ACE. http://www.education.ucf.edu/
knightedtalks/.
Looking forward, ACE will send the teacher rosters
and number of children per class (including Spanish
speaking students) for planning purposes for each
of the following grade levels: Pre-K, K, 1 and 2.
The Latin American-Caribbean (LAC) Scholarship comes to UCF! As you know, UCF Global is the organizational
division on campus dedicated to international
outreach and opportunity. Their quest is to
transform lives by providing access to high-
impact, international experiences across UCF and
our global communities while serving as a model
of excellence for innovation, partnerships and
services.
UCF Global constantly challenges the university to
bring Dr. Hitt’s goals to life through
internationalization across campus. Today, we are
excited to discover that UCF has committed to
extend the benefit of the Latin American-
Caribbean Scholarship (LAC) approved by the
State of Florida (regulation 7.007).
UCF departments will initiate the LACS form
which should indicate the funding account and a
commitment for two semesters with a minimum
of $500 scholarship per semester following the
State of Florida regulation 7.007 requirements for
funding sources.
UCF has limited the LACS awards to 20 awards per
academic year. Students may renew after two+
semesters; the sponsoring department must
submit a new form.
This scholarship will enhance our campus’
undergraduate education by providing an
international focus that allows us to be more
inclusive and diverse.
Students who are awarded the scholarship will be
reclassified as in-state for tuition purposes for two
semesters. Awarded students must maintain good
academic standing (minimum of 3.0 UCFGPA),
maintain their immigration status, and comply with
the criteria stablished by regulation 7.007.
Current or admitted undergraduate students that
meet the requirements of the LAC scholarship
outlined in the State of Florida regulation 7.007 as
well as the additional UCF criteria are eligible to
apply:
A minimum of a 3.0 high-school GPA or UCF
GPA
Must be enrolled full-time
Must be a citizen of a Latin American or
Caribbean country

Assistant Vice-President of UCF Global at
Textbook Affordability is an Issue for CEDHP Majors Penny Beile, Associate Director for Research,
Education, and Engagement, informs us that UCF
librarians are working closely with a number of
campus stakeholders – including faculty and CDL
instructional designers – to promote adoption of
free or low cost course materials. These efforts,
generally referred to as “textbook affordability,”
are one way the faculty can help reduce the cost of
a college education. Large scale studies have
reported that students who take classes with free
or low-cost course materials tend to have higher
course grades, take more credit hours, and
achieve a shorter time to graduate than students
who do not. See lumenlearning.com/page/oer-
impacts-student-success-metrics/ for more
information.
One of the projects that we’ve been most involved
with is running the textbook list against library
holdings to identify items already being assigned
by the faculty, and I’m delighted to report that we
found options that your faculty can easily
adopt. Note that these ebooks are one-to-one
replacements of books currently being
assigned. They are DRM-free (digital rights
management) and offer unlimited use by students
and faculty. Locally administered surveys have
revealed students in classes that have already
adopted affordable course materials report high
levels of satisfaction, and faculty are equally
pleased.
If you have questions about textbook affordability
efforts on campus, please don’t hesitate to let us
know through your library representatives: Will
Russell, Nicole Damico, and Rita Buchoff.
