Fatuma Ali Sali is a mother of eight who is facing the worst drought in 50 years in Ethiopia. She is one of nearly half a million

people participating in a CRS project to help ride out the drought. The project helps people use new practices and technologies to counter the devastating effects of higher temperatures, pro-longed drought and soil erosion.

CARIDADES CATOLICAS Tu Lo Hiciste por Mi

Fatuma Ali Sali es una madre de ocho hijos que se en-

frenta a la peor sequía en 50 años en Etiopía. Ella es una de los casi medio millón de perso-nas que participan en un proyecto de CRS para ayudar a sobrellevar la sequía. El proyecto ayu-da a las personas a utilizar nuevas prácticas y tecnologías para contrarrestar los efectos de-vastadores de las temperaturas más altas, la prolongada sequía y la erosión del suelo.

Saint Frances Xavier Cabrini’s Story

Frances Xavier Cabrini was the first United States citizen to be canonized. Her deep trust in the loving care of her God gave her the strength to be a valiant woman doing the work of Christ.

Refused admission to the religious order which had educated her to be a teacher, she be-gan charitable work at the House of Providence Orphanage in Cadogno, Italy. In Sep-tember 1877, she made her vows there and took the religious habit.

When the bishop closed the orphanage in 1880, he named Frances prioress of the Mis-sionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart. Seven young women from the orphanage joined her.

Since her early childhood in Italy, Frances had wanted to be a missionary in China but, at the urging of Pope Leo XIII, Frances went west instead of east. She traveled with six sisters to New York City to work with the thousands of Italian immigrants living there.

She found disappointment and difficulties with every step. When she arrived in New York, the house intended to be her first orphanage in the United States was not available. The archbishop ad-vised her to return to Italy. But Frances, truly a valiant woman, departed from the archbishop’s resi-dence all the more determined to establish that orphanage. And she did.

In 35 years, Frances Xavier Cabrini founded 67 institutions dedicated to caring for the poor, the abandoned, the uneducated and the sick. Seeing great need among Italian immigrants who were losing their faith, she organized schools and adult education classes.

As a child, she was always frightened of water, unable to overcome her fear of drowning. Yet, despite this fear, she traveled across the Atlantic Ocean more than 30 times. She died of malaria in her own Columbus Hospital in Chicago.

Reflection

The compassion and dedication of Mother Cabrini is still seen in hundreds of thousands of her fel-low citizens who care for the sick in hospitals, nursing homes, and state institutions. We complain of increased medical costs in an affluent society, but the daily news shows us millions who have lit-tle or no medical care, and who are calling for new Mother Cabrinis to become citizen-servants of their land.

A SPECIAL INVITATION TO ALL Next Sunday, November 19, at 3:30pm, the annual Ecumeni-cal Thanksgiving Service sponsored by the Passaic Ecumeni-cal Committee will be held in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 10 St. Francis Way, Passaic.

The homilist will be Rev. Brendan Galvin, Pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Passaic.

“With thankful hearts, we pray for peace,” is the theme of the service. The ecumenical Choir compromised of members of the Passaic churches will lead the con-gregation in song.

All those who attend are asked to bring an offering of non-perishable food items, (canned or packaged) to be distributed to the needy of the Passaic area.

Many clergy and members of churches throughout the city and beyond will join in praising and thanking God for His many blessings and in enjoying each other’s company at a social in the church hall after the service. This is a beautiful a nd uplifting way to begin Thanksgiving week.

LA HISTORIA DE SANTA FRANCISCA JAVIER CABRINI

Francisca Javier Cabrini fue la primera ciudadana de los Estados Unidos en ser canoni-zada. Su profunda confianza en el cuidado amoroso de su Dios le dio la fuerza para ser una mujer valiente que hace el trabajo de Cristo.

Rechazó la admisión a la orden religiosa que la había educado para ser maestra, y co-menzó una obra de caridad en el Orfanato de la Casa de la Providencia en Cadogno, Ita-lia. En septiembre de 1877, ella hizo sus votos allí y tomó el hábito religioso.

Cuando el obispo cerró el orfanato en 1880, nombró a Francisca priora de las Hermanas Misioneras del Sagrado Corazón. Siete mujeres jóvenes del orfanato se unieron a ella.

Desde su primera infancia en Italia, Francisca había querido ser misionera en China pero, a instan-cias del Papa León XIII, Francisca se dirigió hacia el oeste en lugar de ir hacia el este. Ella viajó con seis hermanas a la ciudad de Nueva York para trabajar con los miles de inmigrantes italianos que viven allí.

Ella encontró decepción y dificultades con cada paso. Cuando llegó a Nueva York, la casa que pre-tendía ser su primer orfanato en los Estados Unidos no estaba disponible. El arzobispo le aconsejó que volviera a Italia. Pero Francisca, una mujer verdaderamente valiente, partió de la residencia del arzobispo más decidida a establecer ese orfanato. Y ella lo hizo.

UNA INVITACIÓN ESPECIAL PARA TODOS

El próximo domingo, 19 de noviembre, a las 3:30 p.m., se lle-vará acabo el Servicio Ecuménico de Acción de Gracias patro-cinado por el Comité Ecuménico de Passaic. Tendrá lugar en la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Monte Carmelo, 10 St. Fran-cis Way, Passaic.

El encargado de la Homilia será el Rev. Brendan Galvin, pastor de la Primera Iglesia Metodista Unida, Passaic.

“Con corazones agradecidos, oramos por la paz”, es el tema del servicio. El Coro ecuménico de los miembros de las iglesias de Passaic dirigirá a la congregación.

A todos los que asistan se les pide que traigan una ofrenda de alimentos no perecede-ros, (enlatados o empacados) para ser distribuidos a los necesitados del área de Passaic.
