1. Purpose The purpose of the Water Quality Procedure is to standardise the water quality sampling program for Omya Australia’s Bajool Marble Mine. This document outlines the procedures and requirements for producing data to:

• To establish compliance with the regulatory requirements. • To provide an early warning system for potential non-compliance’s. • To monitor the environmental health of the on-site water bodies.

2. Roles and Responsibilities Plant Manger (SSE or delegate): maintains overall responsibility to:

• Ensure sampling complies with regulatory sampling requirements; • Maintain quality assurance over collection, transport, results retention and reporting. • Review results and initiate corrective actions, internal investigation, internal notifications to the

Operations Director or external notification to the EHP as required. • Conduct training of delegates in the implementation of this procedure.

Administration Officer

• Ensures the maintenance of records resulting from this procedure for a period of 5 years. 3. References The following guidelines have been sourced and provide the guiding principles upon which this manual has been prepared.

• Water Quality Sampling Manual EHP (1995). • AS/NZS 5667.1:1998. Water Quality – Sampling. Part 1: Guidance on the design of sampling programs,

sampling techniques and the preservation and handling of samples. • AS/NZS 5667.4:1998. Water Quality – Sampling. Part 4: Guidance on sampling from lakes, natural and

man-made. • Attachment 1 Omya Field Water Sample Collection Instruction • Attachment 2 Omya Water Quality Testing Instruction

4. Definitions pH pH is a measure of hydrogen ion concentration in water and provides a measure of the acidity or

alkalinity of a solution. A pH of 7 is called neutral, above 7 is basic (or alkaline), and below 7, acidic.

Turbidity The turbidity of a water body is a measure of the presence or absence of soluble, suspended and

colloidal particles that hinder the transmission of natural light from the surface to the lower depths. Suspended Solids Suspended solids (SS) is the amount of tiny solid particles that remain suspended in

water and act as a colloid. The measurement of suspended solids is one way of gauging water quality.

Electrical Conductivity Electrical conductivity (abbreviated EC, and often simply called ‘conductivity’), the

ability of water to carry an electric current, is used as an indicator of salinity and the concentration of dissolved salts in a water body.

>24hr Rainfall Event For the purposes of interpretation of our Environmental Authority, the site defines a

greater than 24 hour rainfall event as continuous rainfall readings logged on our onsite Weather Station without a pause of longer than 5 minutes, for a 24 hour period.

5. Equipment The following equipment is required to be carried Field Equipment Laboratory Equipment: • 4WD with flashing light and UHF Radio • Deionized Water squirt bottle • Laboratory supplied sample bottles • Lovibond PC Checkit Turbidity Monitor • Marking Pen • HQ40d Portable pH, Conductivity, Multi-Parameter Meter • Extension Sample Pole • Calibration Standards (Turbidity, pH and Conductivity) • Esky with Ice Bricks • Omya Calibration Register • Sample Twirl Bags or sterile container • 500ml Plastic Beaker • Rubber Gloves • Paper towel • Water Sample Field Sheet

PPE: • Long Sleeved Hi-Vis Shirt • Long pants • Steel Capped Safety Footwear • Safety Glasses • First aid kit (Snake bite kit) • Drinking Water • Wet Weather clothing (if required) • Sunscreen as required

6. Monitoring Schedule Water quality monitoring is to be undertaken in accordance with the Omya Environmental Authority. The document identifies the following Monitoring Triggers: • >50mm rain event; or • >24 hour rain event or • Discharge event from the Wells or Northern Pits. The Monitoring Trigger shall be noted on the Water Monitoring Field Sheet.

6.1 Onsite Weather Station Omya onsite Weather Station records data continuously and sends SMS Warnings to the Plant Manager when the Monitoring Trigger rainfall event of 50mm is approaching. (20mm, 40mm and 50mm) Weather station data can be accessed via for following web based logon:

www.spokedata.com

Login: pwilson Password: PassW0rd01

7. Pre-Start Checklist: Preparation is essential, for the Bajool site where Monitoring Trigger events are infrequent. When the 20mm SMS Warning is received by Plant Manger the following activities should be undertaken in preparation for a Monitoring Trigger event:

• Ensure good supply of Laboratory Sample Bottles and the Equipment listed in Section 5 of this procedure. Contact the External Laboratory if additional bottles are required.

Page 3: Omya Australia Pty Ltd Standard Operating Procedure · NA Internal Omya Water Quality Monitoring WAT 2d (BQW - 3) 23 48'36.17"S 150 38'46.16"E EA Monitoring location (BQW-3). Sediment

When the 40mm SMS Warning is received by Plant Manger the following activities should be undertaken in preparation for a Monitoring Trigger event:

• Begin preparations for site collection of samples, identify delegate sample collection personnel. • Ensure adequate Ice Bricks are frozen ready for sample dispatch. • Calibrate Monitoring equipment in accordance with Attachment 2.

Prior to going out to collect samples:

• Prepare and pack sample bottle labels using waterproof ink with the site information, • Pack Water Sample Field Sheet (Attachment 3) and review Omya Water Monitoring Locations

(Attachment 4) • Complete chain‐of‐custody forms ready for use (Attachment 5), • Conduct a Take 5 assessment to identify hazards associated with sample collection. • Access sites and collect field samples in line with Omya Field Water Sample Collection Instruction

(Attachment 1) • Once collected, return to site laboratory to undertake onsite Water Quality Analysis in line with Omya

Water Quality Testing Instruction (Attachment 2) 8. Water Quality Monitoring Program In accordance with the site Environmental Authority, Bajool Marble Mine undertakes water monitoring on site in line with the following schedule provided in Table 1.0 SAFETY NOTES: Access to sampling locations during rain events may be slippery and hazardous. Use caution and the extension Sample Pole where appropriate. If Access to the sample location is not considered SAFE during the Take 5, do not collect sample until able to do so without risk of injury. If unable to conduct sampling of a Monitoring Trigger event due to safety reasons please note :

“UNSAFE TO COLLCET SAMPLE” on field Sampling Sheet and in 2010 to 2016 Compiled Water Monitoring Spreadsheet.

These will be transcribed to the 2010 to 2016 Compiled Water Monitoring Spread sheet maintained in the Omya Share Drive. Hard copies of the Field sheets shall be maintained by the Administration Officer for a period of 5 Years. External Monitoring results will be received by the Plant Manager from the NATA Certified Laboratory and shall be transcribed into the 2010 to 2016 Compiled Water Monitoring Spreadsheet upon receipt from the external laboratory. Results will be compared to Environmental Authority Limits and exceedances shall be:

• Investigated by the Plant Manager, and • Entered into the onsite Incident Management System, and • Notified to the EHP by the Plant Manager within 24 hours of receipt from the Laboratory.

Note: Further investigation including follow up monitoring shall be initiated by Plant Manger in consultation with Operations Manager and Omya Sustainability Manager where required.
