Winnie the Pooh was based on and name after Milne's son's teddy bear. His name was Christopher Robin and only Owl and Rabbit are not based on his toys.

Milne studied Maths at Cambridge, but he wanted to be a writer. He wrote for the student magazine and later joined Punch magazine, where he wrote humorous poems.

Although he was a pacifist, Milne served in the army in World War I and the Home Guard in World War II.


One of Milne's teachers at school was HG Wells, who went on to write The Time Machine and The War of the Worlds, among other books.

The 100 Acre Wood is based on Ashdown Forest in East Sussex. The family spent their weekends and holidays there when Christopher Robin was small.


Alan Alexander Milne was born on the 18th of January, 1882, in London. His father was a headteacher.

When he was working at Punch magazine, Milne met E.H Shepard, who illustrated his stories and poems.
