Official bulletin of District 201Q2

Hello to you all

We are into the 5th month of the year already. As always May is the time when the MD Convention is held. This year it is being held in Geelong, Victoria.

April saw the Queensland State Youth of the Year Finals held in Brisbane on the 6th.This year there were 5 Judges and 6 contestants. These young people were very well spoken and presented their speeches with confidenc . The Public speaking Award went to Kel-sie Van Rees, sponsored by Babinda Lions Club. The Community Award was won by Max Bainbridge, sponsored by Twin Cities Leo Club. The Youth of the year title went to Nicholas Carroll, sponsored by Mackay Northern Beaches Lions Club. Thank you to all contestants for your involvement. Thanks also to the NAB for their support of this Project.

Sunday morning I was invited to attend a presentation at Lions Medical Research Foundation where the newest member of the research team Dr Olivia Holland, who starts her 3 year term on May 1st was present. Dr Olivia Holland is to research Gestational Diabetes. This is also in keeping with Lions Diabetes project. A tour of the centre was also arranged but unfortunately I was unable to do this tour.

The weather seems to have settled in the Townsville area now and repairs are being made to people’s properties at last. There are still some funds available in District’s Disaster Fund for distribution to needy families and I encourage Clubs to make application to District if needed. In most districts the Cane Harvest will commence in June and no doubt this will make life very busy for most.

Easter was late this year and school holidays as well. I hope everyone had a Happy Easter and enjoyable holiday. Anzac Day fell 2 days after Easter and it was pleasing to see the primary and secondary young people proudly marching in the parade.

As I continue to improve I hope to resume Club visits after the council meeting and MD Convention and look forward to visiting with those clubs I have not already visited. Hope to meet up with Lions at Convention. Take care and enjoy life.

Whitsunday Lions on ANZAC Day

The heavy rains and wind cleared just in time for the annual Airlie Beach ANZAC Day March. Wet weather gear was on standby, but the sun came out to add to the occasion. Whitsunday Lions are pictured in front of the beautiful temporary cenotaph used on the day while the Airlie Beach foreshore is still under renovations.

Hello Lions, Lionesses and Leos

April has certainly been a busy month coping with login to the MyLci database. Since downloading the MyLion app, some Secretaries, including myself, have experienced difficulties in logging in to MyLci to complete their membership reports.

BUT!!!! The My Lion is now operating quite well. For any Secretary having problems, please follow the next two stages to login.

1. Register for My Lion.

2. Enter your email address.

3. Enter a new password (Do not use any existing password you had for the former MyLci site). Once you have entered and saved password you should have access. Any problems please call me on my mobile 0407 044 963.

I have completed the Club information for the 2019-2020 Lions Australia directory. I leave for the MD201 Geelong convention on Wednesday; District 21Q2 has 29 Delegates, 10 Alternate Delegates and 9 Partners or Lionesses attending this convention.

I have sent out to all Lions and Lioness clubs the email regarding the District Incoming Officer and Leadership Training 1st & 2nd June 2019.

Zones 1, 2 & 3 – CAIRNS: Sheridan Plaza Hotel function room; please advise Jo Lynes of your Club members attendance. Email: [email protected]

From the Cabinet Secretary’s desk ...

Zones 4,5,6,7 & 8 – TOWNSVILLE: TBA; please advise DGE Gary Young of your Club members attendance. Email: [email protected]

Zones 9 &10 – MACKAY: Jubilee Centre- Sarina room, please advise 2VDG Audrey Kenny of your Club members attendance. Email: [email protected]

More information will be sent to the clubs in the near future. Reporting on membership is still very poor.

Out of 62 Lions clubs only 30 have reported at this time of my report.

The District has 13 Lioness clubs with 11 reports for this month.

DG Allan & Ellen are attending the MD201 Geelong convention this week; it is pleasing to see them their for the last Council of Governors meeting as well.

See you all next month.

Atherton Lions and Lionesses on ANZAC Day

The Tablelands turned on perfect weather when Atherton Lions Neil Clarke, Ken Tait, Mil Clay, Kev Ramke, Con Spanos, Glyn Archer and Annette Clay joined forces with Atherton Lionesses Tracey Curtis, Allana Freeman, Karen West and Rosie Cunningham before marching in the Atherton ANZAC Day parade.

STATE LEVEL

FINALS Hello All,

I was lucky enough to attend the State final in Brisbane for the Youth of The Year. There were 4 entrants, Finn Ball from Q1, Nicholas Carroll from Q2, Jenaya Low from Q3, (the only female) and Jared Cullen from Q4.

Finn from Q1 was the State winner, both public speaking and overall, and he will now represent Q districts at the MD Convention in Geelong.

Nicholas was a worthy Q2 entrant and I would think the gap between all four contestants was very narrow.

We now need to wish Finn every success at the Nationals as he carries the hopes of Q Districts.

The program in Q2 was again very successful and the results for Q2 are as follows: 34 clubs, 43 schools (24 government, 19 non-government), 166 contestants, 112 judges (13 from NAB) and 1,714 audience members.

As you can see this is why it is such an important Lions project.

Once again the work put in by Lions, teachers, parents and students was well worth it as we always run a very slick program in North Queensland.

I have attached a photo from the State Final. Thank you for your support again this year.

Kind regards DAVID BRADSHAW 201Q2 YOTY DC

MAY IS CAMP KANGA MONTH We had a very busy Easter at Camp which kept Sue

and Ron (our Camp Managers) on their toes. Plenty of rain lately as well. We now have a total of 60 rooms with 32 of these being air conditioned. We also have 27 powered camp sites down the back, so we cater for all travellers as well as groups.

We have new caterers as well, Sarah and Ivan who also own Blaze Cafe in Proserpine, so we are looking forward to working with them.

We would like to ask each club in Q2 to consider us when making your annual donations please. We are so very grateful to the clubs of Zone 9 and 10, who last year donated $6,500 towards our new water tanks project.

At the moment we have several immediate repairs that we need to carry out and would like to have. As you are all aware, there is always lots of things that either need repairing or replacing at camp, so it is an ongoing process.

1. Repairs to barbecue hut not covered by insurance ..................................................................... $6,500.00

2. Repair and replace metal frame for shaded area for school children outdoor activities ............... $4,800.00

3. Repair yearly drain wash-away with concrete culvert ..................................................................... $7,500.00

4. Erect a basket ball hoop for schools activities ..................................................................... $4,500.00

Please mention our camp to any groups or schools who you think might like to come and stay with us.

If you are passing through Proserpine on the Bruce Highway, take a little detour and come out and visit our camp and say hello to Sue and Ron, who if not busy, will give you a tour around.

Many thanks to all clubs for your generous support over the years.

Irene Braddick Secretary, Camp Kanga

Fellow Lions,

We are moving towards the end of DG Allan’s year. Lets all review how well our District and clubs have been functioning this year:

Has your club managed to review how well you have met member expectations and satisfaction? Have you managed to retain members who might have otherwise moved on due to lack of interest?

Has your club’s new member recruitment at least matched member resignations/drops through transfer etc + 1?

Has your club provided service to your local community - not just raising money through sausage sizzles and other activities?

If you can answer yes to these questions then your club is likely doing very well.

We have 2 months left of the current Lions year to make a difference in our communities and improve the district’s membership. Remember that Q2 is currently considered to be in transition which means we are in danger of being “redistricted due to having a district membership below 1250. To date as at 25th April we have welcomed 117 new members which is wonderful; however we have also dropped 154 members for a variety of reasons which is a nett loss of 37 members so far this year. May is “Strengthen Membership Month”. Let’s use the opportunity to increase our nett membership, improve our position and assist DG Allan to finish his year in positive territory.

Leadership and support: I would like to remind you all that there are a significant number of resources available online via the Lions Clubs International website Member Resource centre.

There are a range of previous webinars that have been recorded and are able to be viewed as well as those future ones to register for. Please make the most of these resources as they are there to support all members not just club officers.

There are also a range of courses that you can access via the Lions Learning Centre. Just type these words in the search field of the Member Resource Centre and you should be taken to this site. To register you need your membership number and create a password.

Incoming Officer training for the next Lions year 2019-20

Letters are being sent out via email where possible to all clubs to advise the details for the 2019-20 incoming officer training. This training was originally scheduled to be held at Camp Kanga on the weekend of 1st & 2nd June 2019. It is being held on the same weekend BUT via electronic means simultaneously. The Incoming Officer training is being provided Saturday 1st June 2019 0830 for 0900 start via Go To Meeting with presenters at Cairns, Townsville and Mackay. The one presenter for a given topic will be providing training to all who attend. Clubs within the Cairns /Townsville/Mackay

areas are invited to attend booked venues as advised and as per normal zone ICOS training:

Cairns: Sheridan Plaza Hotel function room- please advise Jo Lynes of your club members attendance

Email: [email protected]

Townsville: tba – please advise Gary Young of your Club members attendance

Email: [email protected]

Mackay: Jubilee Centre- Sarina room – please advise Audrey Kenny of your attendance

Email: [email protected]

For those clubs outside these areas, we encourage incoming officers to gather together in one location to attend with access to a computer/laptop/tablet with internet and sound. The computer being used needs to have the Go To Meeting app downloaded. A link will be sent to each venue/ /club group individually to attend the training. There is no cost to the individual except the internet use.

Clubs are encouraged to send their 2019-20 officers to this training as there are a number of changes not the least having to report via Lion/MyLion. Other interested members are also welcome to attend.

Officer manuals will be provided as per normal.

Certificates of attendance will be provided with attendance points for each club towards the 2019-20 DG club awards depending on how many of your club’s incoming officers attend.

Expressions of interest will also requested to gauge interest in Leadership training on Sunday 2nd June either per group or individual registration for online training again via Go To meeting for:

Guiding Lion training , difficult conversations and conflict resolution; Zone chair training.

These sessions will not be provided in booked venues but on an individual / group basis as interest is registered. Links will be sent out to the interested individuals for these sessions to a maximum of 140 places.

A couple of quotes that have come to my attention today:

“The biggest concern for any organisation should be when their most passionate people quiet.” “Leaders who don’t listen will be eventually surrounded by people who have nothing to say”(?john Reed Jnr April 2019 via Linked In)

We can all apply these comments to our own individual and club experience. Let’s all consider how we can improve this situation and make our clubs the vibrant groups they deserve to be.

Yours in Lionism

Audrey Kenny 201Q2 2nd Vice District Governor

Coming up for the District Convention?

The Atherton Tablelands is rich in history and beauty—and we are blessed with the added bonus of great weather. While you’re up here for the District Convention, why not stay a few extra days and visit some of our famous attractions.

COFFEE, WINE AND CHOCOLATE

Just five minutes from the centre of Mareeba, visit Coffee Works, a boutique roaster, serving and selling premium Arabica coffees from local plantations. They also stock handcrafted chocolate and other goodies, and for those non-coffee drinkers, there’s a selection of local teas.

Golden Pride Winery is fifteen minutes from Mareeba and focuses on using mangoes from their huge plantation. The cellar door is open daily.

Gallo Dairyland, just 40 minutes from Mareeba, is a family owned and operated fully functional dairy farm where you can watch the process from behind a glass-panelled viewing room. Taste the handcrafted chocolates, gourmet cheese and Greek yoghurt, or treat yourself to morning tea, lunch or afternoon tea.

OF HISTORICAL INTEREST

Mareeba Museum and Information Centre, just on the outskirts of town includes an interesting collection of memorabilia from around the northern Tableland area, as well as having an excellent café.

Mt Mulligan Escarpment, just over two hours from Mareeba, was once a busy coal mining town but is now a ghost town with one occupied residence and a single cemetery. It’s an interesting place to visit as the home to

Queensland’s most catastrophic mining disaster, where 75 miners were killed in 1921.

Rocky Creek Memorial Park, on the outskirts of Atherton, a half hour drive from Mareeba, is worth having a look at. Across the road is the recently renovated WW2 Igloo which was used for entertaining the more than 100,000 WW2 troops who were trained in the Atherton area.

The Hou Wang Miau Chinese Temple in Atherton is the last remaining corrugated iron structure of its kind in the country. Built in 1903, the temple is all that remains of Cedar Camp, the Atherton Chinatown established in the mid 1880s when thousands of Chinese migrants came to the region in search of gold.

Just fifteen minutes from Atherton, Herberton’s Heritage Museum is a must see. A collection of more than 40 buildings have been lovingly restored and filled with items from more than a century ago. From chemist, jeweller and butcher shops to toys, cameras, a working blacksmith and a newspaper office, there is a huge amount to see here.

A further hour up the road, Irvinebank was established in 1882 to accommodate the growing mining boom. Full of heritage listed buildings, with the town dam a picturesque spot for a picnic and a swim under the century old fig trees.

Chillagoe, in the dry country, is less than two hours away, or visit the amazing Undara Lava

Tubes three hours from Mareeba.

Over the next few issues … waterfalls, dams, wetlands, strangler figs, birds, wallabies and much more

edition of FOUNDATION LINE is now available. In this this edition, we introduce you to our most recent and 44th researcher, Dr Olivia Holland who is researching gestational diabetes.

Her work supports one of the pillars of Lions Clubs International and highlights interesting statistics about the percentage of women who will develop gestational diabetes. Not only is it a common health issue, these numbers are expected to increase.

We also hear from Dr Carlos Salomon and Dr Nadeeka Dissanayaka who have provided updates on their respective fields of research.

If you have story ideas or photos that you would like to share from your Club's fundraising activities on behalf of world class medical research, then we would love to hear from you.

Trauma Teddies make a difference

After distributing trauma teddies to several organisations across the southern Tablelands, Lions Club of Atherton Trauma Teddy Coordinator Glyn Ford recently received the following email from Community Support Services. Emily Vohland, Practice Leader of the organisation’s Case Management Team wrote:

Just an update on our Trauma Bears, we have given two bears out, one to an eight year old child who has experienced trauma and secondly, an older 66 year old lady who has had early onset of dementia for several years. The 66 year old lady lost her longtime companion dog two years ago and as part of her dementia she continues to search for him in the yard, calling etc.

The feedback received from her son is very positive, being that she has substituted the trauma bear for her dog, giving him the same name as her dog.

The bear is now her constant companion and she has ceased searching for the dog, alleviating some of her traumatic memories of loss.

Thanking you on behalf of the family for gifting our client with the trauma bear, it is much appreciated by her family and support staff.

A new Lions member was recently inducted into the Home Hill Lions Club at their last meeting. Richie is a long time resident of Home Hill and was very happy to be asked to join Lions.

Richie off-sides for a local water boring contractor, will blend in well with the Club and is looking forward to working at some of upcoming events that the Club has planned.

Disaster relief report

ITS ALL ABOUT THE SMILES ... In this day and age everyone is busy, teenager’s

texting, Gen X having coffee, Oldies on the move so why do something else and join Lions?

The Human Good. Lions humanity is in doing things for others and your heart will be rewarded over and over – it’s called “feel good”.

One aspect of our District’s most recent planned support projects for western communities in drought has been to sponsor a 10 day “Power of Music Tour” by the 1RAR Army Band from Townsville to places west of Emerald.

This professional rock band of 20 Army musicians refreshed and brought much enjoyment, smiles, dancing and laughter to the 2000 people who attended the concerts in halls, parks and schools.

Townsfolk at these concerts, in all locations, spoke with enthusiasm to my wife and I about the support (YOU) Lions were doing in the towns impacted by drought.

Audiences were aware of what we were doing for the children and businesses and at each event and when the Army Commanding Officer introduced the local Lions President, my wife and I, adults applauded our presence – YOUR EFFORT. It became one of those occasions where you get that lump in your throat and feel proud of being a Lion and you know what you are doing is assisting people lives.

Over and over, in the parks where concerts were held, in the school sun sheds, over the BBQ hot plate where local Lions were cooking, in the town halls, The Hall of Fame, The Waltzing Matilda Centre or at truck stops, the locals approached us saying ‘we used to be a Lion’, or ‘my Dad was in Lions’ and some asked to join.

Most people out west are aware that we (Lions) are heavily engaged in each community and that soon after we receive a request we normally fill the need. It was only two days from hearing of people stranded living on the rooves of cars in a flooded areas that we mobilised and arranged 100 male and female care packs - not bad hey?

It was only two days after that we learnt of families separating because of the mental pressure from the continuing drought that we were able to provide support for two children returning to school.

We found Children living in road trains with the fathers needing school books, elderly people suffering from major medical conditions we were able to assisted and so the phone calls continue.

YOUR ROLE: The more we tell and inform others what we are doing – spread the word and then ask others, teenagers and all ages to come and see what we do. People don’t want to really join a Club but they want to get involved and help and do something.

TELL OTHERS: we are providing people in drought areas with:

gas refills for cooking, many vouchers for food, bills and items;

assisting children back to school;

recently sponsored Christmas street parties;

holding sausage sizzles days in unusual locations for community functions;

holding advice days for “Men’s Health”;

assisting drovers along the way;

supporting small town Field Days;

providing Christmas presents to communities in small towns; and

supporting others eg feeding Lions Need for Feed road train drivers as they pass through Lions hub towns of Winton, Longreach, Emerald and Springsure to deliver hay.

Through our activities for the drought, Lions Clubs are engaged at all levels of government; in Council Drought Committees, Church Committees and Community Committees through to the State Government Disaster Management Committees via Councils and recently represented on the Federal Drought Commissioners panel. Lions is known around the world for assisting in natural disasters.

Even though we have Lions districts, ours being Q4, at these difficult time we are able to work together with Q2 up north and others further south so building networks, fellowships with other Lions and sharing the load. Q4 is now conducting a Review for our approach to the ongoing drought.

Inform others of what we are doing as people want to know!

Whitsunday Lions cooking up a storm

Lionsonoz in action When the call goes out for help in a Lions project

Lionsonoz members are there to help.

The Nundle Lions knew they were going to need assistance in catering for the hundreds of people expected to be at this year’s “Go for Gold” festival so asked for help. Lionsonoz member PDG Peter Willis-Jones answered the call and together with another PDG Lion John Davis of Tamworth Lions Club soon found themselves in the kitchen section of the Nundle Lions catering caravan covered in sweat as they cooked hundreds of steak and sausage sandwiches for the hungry crowd of visitors.

The Nundle “Go for Gold” festival is a yearly event conducted on the Easter weekend and highlights the Chinese influence in Nundle’s development with demonstrations of Chinese dancing, music and entertainment as well as gold panning demonstrations and participating in all sorts of gold mining experiences. There are many stalls and other amusements and lots of

people put this event in their diaries as a “must see” each year.

Whitsunday Lions Club cooked up a storm of Bacon & Egg Rolls for the local community on behalf of the Channel 9's / Today Morning Show presented from the Airlie Beach Lagoon live on the 10th April.

Cooking commenced at 5am, so it was a very early morning start for the Lions team on roster. It was great teamwork / and a lot of fun was had.

There is no monthly deadline, but please be aware that entries received very late in the month may be kept for the following issue if the length of the bulletin is more than about twenty pages.

This of course excludes any urgent or date-related information, which will always be included.

When you send photos, please ensure they are at no less than 200KB so that they don’t look fuzzy and out of focus. Photos as high as 2MB are fine.

Many thanks

The stuffed shirt Having just moved into his new office in Whitehall,

pompous, newly promoted Lieutenant Commander Rodney Grant [Royal Navy] was sitting at his desk when Leading Seaman Jones knocked on his door. Particularly aware of his new position, the commander quickly picked up the phone, told the seaman to enter, then said into the phone, 'Yes, Admiral, I'll be seeing him this afternoon and I'll pass along your message. In the meantime, thank you for your good wishes, sir.'

Feeling as though he had sufficiently impressed young Jones, he asked, 'What do you want?'

'Nothing important, sir,' Jones replied without batting an eyelid, 'I'm just here to connect up your new telephone.'

The fishing expedition Fred wanted to go ice fishing. He’d had read several

books on the subject, and finally, after getting all the necessary equipment together, he made his way out onto the ice.

After positioning his comfy stool, he started to make a circular cut in the ice.

Frighteningly, from up above, a voice boomed, 'There are no fish under the ice.' Startled, Fred moved farther down the ice, poured himself a large coffee, and began to cut yet another hole.

Again, from the heavens, the voice bellowed, 'There are no fish under the ice.' Fred was now totally rattled, so moved way down to the opposite end of the ice, set up his stool, and began again to cut an ice-hole.

The voice rang out once more, 'There are no fish under the ice.' Fred stopped, looked upwards and said, 'Is that you, Lord?'

The voice replied, 'No, this is the Ice-Rink Manager.'
