CAR PARK FOR GWINEAR SCHOOL

Class 1

Class 3 have been lucky enough to experience Harvest this week at Wall Methodist Chapel. As a series of ac-tivities, it was a journey to discover more about how the natural world provides rich harvests for everyone to enjoy. Harvest of the Flock described the gath-ering of wool and allowed the children an opportunity to touch some fleece and

then weave & knit with it. Harvest of the Grain involved shar-ing bread as well as looking at the wide variety of breads avail-

able from around the world. Kay’s harvest loaf was amazing! Harvest of the Earth was a practical look at clay with each child being able to make their own gift of a clay finger pot to take home. Harvest of the Ocean reflected on the wealth which the sea can bring us and their origami boats looked very eye-catching. Harvest of the Garden shared the bounty which can be grown in the soil and the patience and per-severance needed to succeed! The values of patience, peace, faithfulness, humility, joy & generosity ran throughout each workshop, making for a very rewarding experi-ence for all the children!

Class 4

It has been a busy start to the term in class 1. All children have settled in really well to their new year group and year 1 and 2 are working really hard showing a really positive attitude. This week we have welcomed our new reception children who all appear really confident and keen to learn. An-

other new member of the class is Beautiful Betty Bear, who is going to be taking trips home with every child through the year. She has already had a busy and fun weekend with Logan.

We have made a great start in Class 4. All the chil-dren look smart and ready to learn. Nearly every-one is reading every night - well done! Some chil-dren have already finished their first homework, and many are covering their reading record to make it very attractive to use. we have been learning about the Greeks, especially the myth of Icarus, and we have learnt lots about how to write effectively already. Many pupils have reached the top of the 'molten' chart, and everyone is trying their best. Well done!

New life for old uniform! We are collecting good condition uniform that you no longer need for a half-term 'sale', in exchange for a small voluntary cash donation towards school funds. If there is a good uptake, this could be run regularly and help keep everyone's costs down. Please pass all items including school shoes and trainers to Rachel or Jenny (Alfie's and Flora's grown ups!) at any time and we'll take it from there. Please support this, it could really help.

School Meals There is an option for your child to have a ‘Grab ‘n’ Go’ packed lunch on a Friday. If you would like this option for your child it must be booked in advance before Friday morning with Mrs B in the office. Please could we remind you that school meals MUST be paid for in advance.

Science Superstar Award A FREE monthly Science Club will be held at the Penlee Gallery & Museum on Saturday mornings from 19 October 2013. Please see the noticeboard under the verandah for more details or visit www.porthcurno.org.uk. Cornwall schools receive Gold Food for Life Catering Mark recognising fresh, healthy

school meals We are pleased to be able to announce that Chartwells new menu that launches after October half term has been accredited with the prestigious Gold Standard by the Soil Association for providing fresh, healthy school meals made with local and organic in-gredients. These menus will include a mixture of organic and local produce; with milk coming from Cornish farm Trewithen Dairy.

Holiday Requests A change that is being introduced by the government may affect some of our families. The Education Regulations 2013 state that 'head teachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances'. The regula-tions are clear that family holidays do not class as exceptional circumstances. This means that we will be unable to sanction family holiday requests this year. Unau-thorised absences are liable to a significant fine from the Education Welfare Service. We are aware that this may cause frustrations for some families and we suggest that if you have concerns about this you should raise these with your local MP.
