WELCOME TO UNE: ORIENTATION 2018Orientation Theme: Respect

WELCOME TO UNE AND TO #ORIENTATION18. Our theme this year is ‘Respect’.

In February 2016, Australia’s universities launched a groundbreaking initiative, Respect.Now.Always. to prevent and address sexual assault and harassment across Universities Australia wide.

In August 2017 the Australian Human Rights Commission released the Change the course: National report on sexual assault and sexual harassment at Australian universities, the result of a national survey of over 30,000 students across all 39 Australian universities.

UNE is now implementing all nine recommendations of the report and is committed to providing a respectful, safe and secure learning, living and working environment. Safety and respect is central to UNE’s culture.

In the words of our Vice-Chancellor, Professor Annabelle Duncan ...

“We will not tolerate sexual assault or harassment at UNE. It starts with Respect for everyone, right Now, and Always. Respect is a way of treating or thinking about everything and everyone. It starts with you!”

RESPECT.

I’M NOT SURE WHERE I NEED TO BE, OR, I’M LOST!Orientation is all about finding out about things and working out where everything is. So, at some stage during Orientation you’re probably going to be lost and not sure where you need to be (everyone at Orientation will feel like this at some stage, it’s completely normal). If you find that you need help, drop in and have a chat with our Orientation Guides located in the Student Support Team tent in the Central Courtyard (just below the main fountain, you can’t miss the ‘i’ banners and tent). You can also find them later in the week in the Dixson Library Foyer.

They’ll be wearing t-shirts that look like this ...

Page 4: On-Campus Orientation 2018: Trimester 1...Challenge on Actionbound. Should more than 3 teams complete all steps, those entries will be drawn at random to decide the prizes. First Prize:

They will be able to answer any of your questions and direct you to where you need to be. If our guides happen to be out and about with other students, drop into the Library and have a chat to the fantastic staff at the Helpdesk (and you can always grab your ID card while you’re there) or look out for the Student Support staff.

I NEED HELP ENROLLING:The Customer Service Team will be available for Online Enrolment assistance at the following times throughout Orientation in the Dixson Library Computer Lab:

Monday 26 February 2-5pm

Tuesday 27 February 9-1pm & 2-4pm

Wednesday 28 February 9-1pm & 2-4pm

Thursday 1 March 9-1pm & 2-4pm

Friday 2 March 9-1pm & 2-4pm

WHICH GROUPS DO I BELONG TO?You are part of the broad community of UNE students studying on-campus or living locally. No doubt you might fit in with one or more of the following groups:

I’m living ON CampusIf you’re living in College you’ll be part of your particular College Freshers (there will be quite a few of you so don’t feel alone!). Senior students (known as Resident Fellows or Academic Mentors) in each of the Colleges will make sure you’re where you need to be at the right times during Orientation. If you have any questions or concerns, make sure you chat to one of your College Seniors.

I’m living in TownThis means you’re now a ‘Townie’. 50% of students who are studying on-campus are Townies just like you. Refer to the specific Townies’ program and make sure you’re at the free Welcome BBQ on Sunday night to meet everyone (plus you’ll pick up your free and ‘official’ Townies’ merch)! There is even a special UNE Townies’ Club, so make sure you join! You’ll also meet all your official reps for the year and if you have any questions or concerns, make sure you chat to one of your Townies Seniors.

I’m an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander studentMake sure you drop in and say hello to the mob at Oorala who will provide specific support just for you, especially if you need tutorial assistance!

Oorala also invite you to drop by the Centre during Orientation week for a number of activities (see the main program below for details).

I’m an online student living locallyYou’re a ‘Townie’ too! You are welcome to join the Townies Club and you’ll have made friends for the duration of your degree(s).

QUICK GUIDE TO ORIENTATION EVENTSTownies: If you’re based in Armidale for your studies, but not actually LIVING on-campus – you’re a ‘Townie’. Make sure you attend the Welcome BBQ at 5.00pm Sunday 25 February at the Bistro (see the map in this program) so you can meet all the other Townies, pick up your free t shirt and Commencement Pack!

Around half our entire on-campus student population are Townies! The free Welcome BBQ is one of the most important events for new Townies. It’s a great networking opportunity - you get to meet other Townies (so you don’t feel alone during other events happening this week), get some great info, and hear about special events planned just for you (plus pick up some nice freebies including your Commencement Pack). There’s a FREE Bus which departs town (Old Courthouse) at 4:45pm and returns from UNE (Northern Carpark)at 7:15pm. Also, if you’re an Indigenous, International or Mature student, we would love to see you at the Welcome BBQ (even if you DO live on campus). This family-friendly welcome is also extended to your partner and any children you may have (but no pets please!).

Whether or not you make it to the BBQ, come to the Top Courtyard (near Campus Essentials) between 8.00 and 9.45am on Monday 26 February, so you can pick up your Academic Gown to wear at the Commencement Ceremony (it’s free but you’ll need photo ID to borrow a gown). There will be free breakfast of pancakes and fruit salads PLUS a free barista coffee for the first 50 Townies there! Any questions? [email protected] or 6773 2506

Commencement Ceremony and Toolkit

You’re all getting gowned up (yes, full-on academic robes) and you’ll join all the UNE dignitaries in Lazenby Hall for the official Welcome Ceremony. It’s a major occasion and the only time every new on-campus UNE student will be in the same place at the same time. You’ll hear from all the important folks at UNE along with student leaders and an official Welcome to Country. Commencement runs for around 40-45 minutes.

Toolkit (hosted by Kirsti Abbott) UNE Lecturer, science communicator, and UNE Discovery program leader Dr Kirsti Abbott will lead a discussion with Dr Erica Smith (representing the academic community), Dr Alex Dunn (representing the support community and an ex UNE student) and a student representative to discuss what their experiences were like and to impart pearls of wisdom to help students get their degrees with minimal hassles. Students will be able to participate and ask questions, in fact, you can ask the panel a question now at https://goo.gl/yFki4e (just click on the + sign at the bottom of the page) and we will answer it in the session.

NOTE: Please return your gown immediately after the Ceremony and Toolkit and definitely prior to the BBQ – Sauce and Academic Gowns don’t mix! If you do not return your gown you will be required to pay the full replacement cost.

Parents’ Information Session (hosted by Janelle Tisserand)We’re hosting a special information session (and morning tea) just for parents. Do you have questions about how UNE works, Scholarships, Centrelink, keeping track of how your son or daughter is going? Please join us to line Graduates’ Walk for the official academic procession at 10am and then head to Lewis Lecture Theatre for a live stream of Commencement Ceremony, Toolkit Session, Morning Tea, and finally the Parents’ Session.

O-Mazing RaceThe O’mazing Race Treasure Hunt is the on-campus orientation for Townies. It includes the main sites at UNE that you will need to know about, and a chance to win prizes. Teams of two are best for the race, but you can have teams of up to six. On your own? No problem, we’ll match you up with a team before the race starts. Marshalling will be at Graduates’ Walk 1.45 on Monday for the race start at 2.00pm.

Lifesaver Day + Campus ToursLifesaver Day is all about the things you can do and get involved with while you’re studying at UNE. It’s a pretty hectic day so make sure you take your time-chat to stallholders, clubs, students and businesses and get involved in everything you can. A university experience is not just about study!

Campus Tours will be conducted by the Orientation Guides every 30 mins (10.00, 10.30, 11.00, 11.30, 12.00, 12.30) to show you where you need to be for the rest of the week (and in particular, your academic programs). Meet at the Student Support Team Information Tent below the fountain outside Lazenby Hall.

Oorala Chill and Grill Come along for a feed and a yarn.

On hand will be the good folk from the Armidale and UNE communities that help support our students. This will include staff from Oorala, Homes North, UNE Medical Centre, Armajun Medical Centres, Centrelink & UNE Student Central, just to name a few. You can grill and chill from 12pm on Friday at the Oorala Centre E022.

Our tips to making the most of Lifesaver Day:

STEP 1: Locate the Information Booth in the Central Courtyard to collect your Lifesaver Day Bag (see photo below), and check out the maps to locate stalls. If you have any questions, be sure to ask our Ambassadors.

STEP 2: Make sure you’ve got the Actionbound app downloaded (see the prizes page for instructions), and you have the Lifesaver Day Treasure Hunt loaded to be in the running for some fantastic prizes.

STEP 3: Check out the Central Courtyard Marquees for UNE Clubs & Societies, and plenty more stalls.

STEP 4: When you have completed the Treasure Hunt, upload your results. We will announce the winning team on the Ed UNE Facebook Page by Wednesday afternoon. Be sure to put your student email in the names section, so that we can get in touch.

STEP 5: Hungry? Grab yourself something to eat at the BBQ in the Central Courtyard.

STEP 6: 12.45pm head to the lawns of Booloominbah for the 2018 commencing photo.

FABRIC OF RESPECTDuring on campus orientation, installation artist and UNE Curator of Cultural and Teaching Collections Narelle Jarry, will work with the whole of the UNE community to create a Fabric of Respect. The art project has been developed to acknowledge the realities of sexual harassment and assault within the university sector, and a desire to engage the UNE community in an active commitment to change.

Seal your commitment by applying your fingerprint to a square of white fabric before creating a flower like bloom with it and adding it to a growing wall of respect. Involvement represents a moral obligation to each other and the community to be respectful and in turn be treated with respect. It is an active gesture, binding each participant to be part of the cultural shift, to literally make your mark.

Every one of us is responsible for the community that we are part of, and we cannot pretend that the issue of sexual harassment is the responsibility of others. Nor can we forget to look at our own behaviour and be prepared to change it.

Fabric of Respect represents a power shift. Join us as we signal a goodbye to collective denial and make an agreement to change our behaviour, give and expect respect.

All students, professional and academic staff are invited to acknowledge a commitment to ending sexual harassment and assault by joining us in creating Fabric of Respect during On Campus Orientation in the Ingrid Moses Courtyard along the wall of the Dixson Library from 10-2pm each day.

Donations of any white, off white, near white or cream fabric are very welcome. They can be dropped at the front desk of the Dixson Library.

If you are willing to spend a couple of hours over the five days to help people prepare and add their blooms to the artwork, or would like further information, please contact Narelle Jarry -

You’ll need to be on the Lawns of Booloominbah by 12.50pm on Tuesday 27 Feb at the latest to take part (the actual shot will take place at 1pm). Please work with the Student Support staff on the day for directions. See you there!
