Report of the Committee on Lecture and LaboratoryAccommodation and Student Aid

A letter was received from the Board of Governors

stating that, at the meeting held on May 31st, the Board

received the Report of the Senate Committee on Lecture and

Laboratory Accommodation and Student Aid and ordered a cop y

of this report and the resolution of Senate endorsing th e

need for student residences sent to the Honourable th e

Minister of Education with the endorsation of the Board .

Report of the Committee on Intra-mural Sports and Athletic s

A letter was received from the Board of Governors ,

stating that at the meeting on May 31st the Board received

the Report of the Committee on Intra-mural Sports an d

Athletics, as amended and adopted by Senate . On instruc-

tions from the Board a copy of this report was transmitte d

to the Honourable the Minister of Education, together with

a copy of the resolution requesting the establishment of a

Department of Physical Education at the University o f

British Columbia, which the Board received from the B .C .

Branch of the Canadian Physical Education Association at

the meeting on April 26th, 1943 .

A letter was received from the Board of Governor s

approving the recommendation of Senate that a University

Entrance Scholarship of $175 .00 from the Special Bursarie s

Fund be awarded to Miss Edith Angove in the event of he r

registering at the University for the Session 1943-44 .

Report of Committee on Compulsory War Work for Under-graduate Wome n

Adopted, including the recommendations containe d

therein with respect to the War Work Plan for 1943-44 .

University Naval Training Divisio n

A letter was received from the Board of Governor s

acknowledging notice of the concurrence of Senate with the

Board's action in respect to the University Naval Training

Division .

University Air Training Corp s

A letter was received from the Board of Governors ,

stating that the Board had approved the agreement between

the Department of National Defence for Air and the Univer-

sity of British Columbia respecting the establishment of a

unit of the University Air Training Corps at the Universit y

of British Columbia . The Board also approved the recommen-

dation of the Committee on Military Education that Dr . J .

Allen Harris be appointed Commanding Officer of the Univer -

sity Air Training Corps .

Appointment of a Representative of the Women's Athleti cDirectorate to the University Council on Athletics and

Physical Education

A communication was received from the Board o f

Governors stating that at the meeting on May 31st th e

Board approved the recommendation of the University Counci l

on Athletics and Physical Education that the appointment

of a representative of the Women's Athletic Directorate t o

the Council be authorized .

University Graduate Historical Society Book Priz e

A letter was received from the Board of Governor s

reporting that the Board had approved the omission of th e

statement in regard to this prize from the Calendar fo r

1943-44 .

Course in Personnel Administratio n

For the information of Senate a letter was receive d

from the Board of Governors reporting that the Board had

approved of a second course in Training in Personne l

Administration to be offered by the Department of Univer -

sity Extension at the request and under the sponsorshi p

of the Dominion Department of Labour .

G .G .D . Kilpatrick, Director of Army Education, were receive d

from the Board of Governors . The Board had approved of the

offering of the No .2 Canadian Army Course at two levels o f

instruction, if necessary .

Reports of the Committee of Senate on entrance require-

ments, courses to be offered and possible credit to b e

granted for the No .2 Canadian Army University Course, ha d

been mailed to the members of Senate . This Committee ha d

been appointed by the Chair with power to act .

At the meeting of the Committee on May 21st th e

following recommendations were approved :

1. The minimum entrance requirement for admission t othe course shall be complete standing (with at leas t60% in Mathematics and in Physics) in Senior Matri-culation or in First Year Arts . In the case o fSenior Matriculation students who have not yet re-ceived the results of their examinations, recommen-dations from their high school principals will b econsidered .

2. Students who complete the cours e

(a) will be allowed to graduate in the Faculty o fAgriculture in not less than two years, pro-vided they make necessary adjustments in courses ;

(b) will be given credit for Second Year Arts ,provided the time allotted to English in theArmy Course (as outlined in the University o fToronto Schedule) be increased to two hours .These students will be excused from the secondcourse in the compulsory language ;

(c) provided they have at least a pass standing inChemistry 1 or Senior Matriculation Chemistry ,will be given credit for Second Year Applie dScience on completion of the required cours ein Chemistry of the Second Year .

At the meeting on June 14th, the Committee considere d

the request of the military authorities that students wit h

University Entrance standing be admitted to the Army Cours e

and approved the following proposals :

1. That instruction at two different levels be given ,provided an insufficient number of candidates wit hcomplete Senior Matriculation standing is available :

2. That applicants at the junior level be accepte dprovided they have complete University Entranc estanding with at least 601. in each of Physica lSciences and Mathematics :

3. That students who obtain satisfactory standing i nthe Course arranged for the junior level be give nacademic credit by the University as follows :

Fifteen units as from University Entranc etowards the degree in the Faculty of Arts an dScience or the Faculty of Agriculture . Inthe Faculty of Arts and Science the languag erequirement must still be met . Those wh oobtain at least 601, in each of Chemistry ,Physics, and Mathematics shall be admitted t othe Second Year in Applied Science with ful lstanding .

4. That the requirements for applicants at the seniorlevel, and the academic credits given for the senio rcourse, be those adopted at the first meeting ofthe Committee .

systems of organization on the maximum student enrolment o f

the University of British Columbia .

The Chairman stated that difficulty was being experi-

enced both by the Registrar and the Dean of Women in secur-

ing adequate accommodation for out-of-town students .

Dean Mawdsley reported on the present situation wit h

respect to the women students .

Canadian Universities, regarding a meeting of the Conferenc e

revisions in the Government regulations in regard t o

mobilization of students .

The Secretary was requested to express to Principa l

Elliott the deep regret of the members of Senate on learn-

ing of his present illness and their best wishes for a

speedy recovery .
