Dear St Paul of the Cross Parishioners,

On October 10th, 2020 a young boy of fi een was declared blessed at the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, Italy. Born in 1991, Carlo Acu s was a normal kid who loved soccer, played on his Playsta on and enjoyed good food. His love for Jesus was evident from the me he was five. It would seem that God blessed him with special graces. It was he who brought his parents to the Catholic faith that they had abandoned. His eyes were set on heaven. He said, “Our

goal must be the Infinite and not the finite. The Infinite is our homeland. We are always expected in Heaven.” Once he made his First Holy Communion he made daily Mass his priority. Stricken with leukemia, he was not afraid to die. He said, “I am happy to die because I lived my life without was ng even a minute of it on anything not pleasing to God.” His short life was spent “with Jesus, for Jesus, in Jesus.” Carlo will probably go down as the first millennial saint. Carlo reminds us that we are meant for heaven. We are called to be saints. All that we do here in our parish is meant to help us become saints – ul mately to reach heaven. The purpose of our religious educa on, our school and all our ministries is to help all of us to become holy. Unfortunately many people have a distorted idea of what a saint is. They think that sanc ty is out of touch with real life and out of reach for common folk. Saints are as normal as you and I. Just like Jesus who enjoyed a good meal and the company of His friends, we become saints even as we savor the blessings of God’s abundant goodness.

The purpose of our faith educa on is not merely to pass on some informa on or even to teach a moral code, or to ensure that our Church con nues to flourish by recrui ng new members. The purpose of all catechesis is pure and simple: To make saints. What do I mean by that? The ul mate goal of our life is to become saints, to reach heaven. We came from God and our ul mate purpose is to return to God. Those of us familiar with the Bal more Catechism are aware of this truth. One of the first ques ons in the book asks: “Why did God make you?” The answer is short and to the point: “God made me to know Him, to love Him, and to serve Him in this life, and to be happy with Him forever in heaven.” Catechesis is supposed to help our children in their effort to reach heaven. In other words, catechesis is meant to make saints.

Some years ago I was talking to a mother of several children. At one point, out of the blue she said: “My primary goal as a mother is to get my children to heaven.” It is so easy to forget that fundamental purpose of our paren ng. We are called to help our children become holy. On the day we bap zed our children, we promised that we would teach them to love the God Who gave them to us. On that day our children started on a journey – to grow in the image of Christ. Parents are the first teachers of the faith. Saints are formed in the home first of all.

What catechesis does is to reinforce and supplement what is done at home. In our religious educa on – whether in our CCD program or in our Catholic school - we seek to help our children form a personal rela onship with the living person of Jesus Christ. Through prayer and sacraments, through doctrine and moral teaching, we assist our students in their efforts to sanc fy themselves even as they live in this world. We want to show them how they can keep themselves unsullied by the tempta ons and seduc ons of our material world.

In conclusion I would like to share with you the words Pope Francis spoke to the young people gathered in Rio, Brazil, for World Youth Day. His words resonate with what I have tried to share with you in this column:

We need saints without cassocks, without veils. We need saints with jeans and tennis shoes. We need saints that go to the movies, that listen to music, that hang out with friends.

We need saints who put God in first place, ahead of succeeding in any career. We need saints who look for me to pray every day and who know how to be in love with purity, chas ty, and all good things. We need saints, saints of the 21st century with a spirituality appropriate to our new me.

We need saints that have a commitment to helping the poor and to make the needed social change. We need saints to live in the world, to sanc fy the world and to not be afraid of living in the world by their presence in it.

We need saints that drink Coca-Cola, that eat hot dogs, that surf the internet and that listen to their iPods. We need saints that love the Eucharist, that are not afraid or embarrassed to eat a pizza or drink a beer with their friends.

We need saints who love the movies, dance, sports, theater. We need saints that are open, sociable, normal, happy companions. We need saints who are in this world and who know how to enjoy the best in this world without being callous or mundane.

We need saints.

May our Catholic school and our religious educa on program enable our children and young people to become saints! May all of us strive to conform ourselves to the image of Christ!

Several months ago, when our church first opened, the archdiocese cau oned that “the vulnerable popula on” (of which I am a part) may a end Mass at their own risk. I felt I really couldn’t leave un l I felt comfortable that the crews were established for the three Masses I am currently serving. I believe we now have assembled a great group of dedicated ushers who have stepped up to help the church during these difficult mes. I feel it is now me for me to limit my exposure to the virus and re re. Steve Bozek has graciously offered to become the new head usher. A long

me ago, Father Carl asked me to be head usher. I felt it was the most important thing ever asked of me. I truly have enjoyed serving this wonderful parish faith community and will truly miss the opportunity of con nuing to do so.

ADOPT A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS GIFTS ALSO CANCELED THIS YEAR COVID and social distancing demands make it impossible to interview each client face to face, write down their wish list, and ask parishioners to shop, wrap, and deliver the gi s to the gym as we have done for so many years. This year we are asking for $25 and $50 Wal-Mart gi cards. They will be distributed curbside along with their groceries and special holiday food on December 19th. The number of cards per family are determined by family size. We hope to collect enough cards to give $50 per individual in each household. We are going to miss seeing the smiles and tears when clients come to pick up their bags of gi s. I look forward to resuming the Adopt a Family gi -giving program again next year. Monetary dona ons to the Social Service Ministry are always welcome to keep our shelves stocked in the pantry, and help us with energy and rental assistance for our clients when appropriate.

The COVID mandate to social distance makes it impossible to have a Thanksgiving Food Drive a er weekend Masses in November. However, we arepleased to announce that the Jewel Osco on Greenwood Avenue and Busse Highway is going to take care of all of the Thanksgiving dinners for the 200 families we have served this year. They will use funds donated by customers for the Dinners for Needy Families in the Area Fund at the cash registers. RENEW MY CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENT

As you know, Renew My Church (RMC) is the strategic ini a ve of the Archdiocese of Chicago to revitalize parishes in Cook and Lake Coun es. Every parish in the Archdiocese is part of a “grouping”: a cluster of parishes that plans how this renewal will look in its par cular community. There are roughly 100 groupings throughout the Archdiocese and groupings have been ac vated since 2016. “Ac va on” is the commencement of the process whereby a commi ee consis ng of priests and parishioners from each parish, along with Archdiocesan personnel, discern possible structural, opera onal and ministerial changes for the grouping.

Our grouping, as you may recall, consists of the following parishes: Mary, Seat of Wisdom (Park Ridge), Saint Paul of the Cross (Park Ridge), Saint Juliana (Chicago), Our Lady of Hope (Rosemont), Our Lady of Ransom (Niles), and Immaculate Concep on (Chicago). The Archdiocese has informed us that our grouping will be ac vated in February 2021 with the goal of implemen ng the new reality by July 1, 2021.

We were originally scheduled to be ac vated either in late 2022 or early 2023. The adjusted meline for us and for all remaining groupings is intended to accomplish both the need to address financial challenges posed by the pandemic and to move parishes forward to the phase of spiritual renewal more quickly than previously scheduled.

This brief le er is the first of more joint communica ons between us pastors as a sign of our mutual respect and collabora on with one another, as well as our desire to be transparent to you about this process. We have merely received, as of now, informa on about our ac va on, and we will be sure to communicate to you more details about

melines and strategies as we receive them.

This is an exci ng me for the Catholic Church in the northwest side of Chicago and its suburbs! We are confident that with our communi es working and praying together, Christ will be present and alive in the hearts of believers and that our Church will be strong for the future.

Please know of our gra tude for your dedica on to the faith, along with our prayers for you during this difficult me in our world.

THE PANDEMIC SHINES BRIGHTLY ON US

The pandemic through which we are suffering can be considered to be a spotlight on revealing mankind’s rela onship and true conduct toward God. Scripture tells us, “Our God is a loving and pa ent God, slow to anger.” But we also know that He is a forgiving God. We are His children, and we have seen God’s constant involvement in personally giving us devo ons to help guide our lives away from sin. Devo ons such as: Devo on to the Sacred Heart: Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacque Devo on to God’s Divine Mercy: Jesus and St. Maria Faus na Devo on to the Rosary: Blessed Mother to the world But how do we respond to His love and care? God made each of us with the ability of knowing right from wrong, the freedom to make our choices, and the strength to overcome challenges to both. We were not made with an uncontrollable will to sin. We bring all sin on ourselves and boy, have we done a massive job of that. In a bright light, we find knowledge and the pandemic shines brightly on us. It shows a people who have turned their backs on God through disdaining, thoughtless treatment, and ignoring the love and mercy He sheds on us. But then, the pandemic comes and limits our comforts and ins lls fear of death from an unknown virological enemy. In blinding faith, we suddenly realize that God did not walk away from us, but we walked away from Him. We rush to pe on our God for the help of His divine mercy to forgive us and rid us of this pandemic situa on and we offer contri on for our sinful conduct. To us the contri on in our hearts is real but has the taint of hypocrisy. But it is God’s Love and Forgiveness that salves our hearts and restores us back to our righ ul rela onship with Him.

Burly longshoremen glared at the woman in widow’s dress who interrupted their drinking to beg money, in broken English, for her orphanage. The bar exploded in laughter as one man responded by spi ng in her face. “That was for me,” the woman smiled. “Do you have anything for the children?” Given today’s na onal debate, could it be as much God’s sense of humor as God’s will for our sanc fica on that our first American saint should be an immigrant and naturalized ci zen? Frances Cabrini, adop ng the name Xavier, confided to Pope Leo XIII her longing to follow her Jesuit patron to Asia. But the Pope replied, “Not East—West!” So she and her Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart exchanged exo c dreams of China for the impoverished reality of Italian ghe os across the United States and Central and South America. Before her death, Frances had founded seventy educa onal, health care, child, and family service ins tu ons. Today, from Siberia to Ethiopia, in sixteen countries, Mother Cabrini’s sisters and lay associates embody her prac cal spirituality: “Let’s get to work! We’ll have eternity to rest!”
